Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. Lord

God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you,

we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus

Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take

away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at

the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone

Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God

the Father. Amen. COLLECT FOR THE DAY God of love, We pray for peace and for the well-being of the whole human family in Jerusalem and the Holy Land. In the midst of political and religious divisions and conflicts, we ask that your Holy Spirit would gather these peoples, as descendants of Abraham and Sarah, in understanding, acceptance and love. We ask that your grace would inform the thoughts and actions of leaders, and that all citizens would seek to act with forgiveness and forbearance. Renew our commitment to be voices for peace in the Holy Land. Renew our zeal to work with such partners as care for the peoples of an ancient land, whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim or other. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.*

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD The Book of Acts begins by recalling Jesus’ rising from the dead, his appearance to chosen people, and his return to the Father. The disciples have now returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives to await the coming of the Holy Spirit. They are in the upstairs room where they are lodging, praying constantly with a group of women and Jesus’ brothers. THE FIRST READING Acts 1:15-17,21-26 ........................ PSALM PRAYER Giver of life, save us from the desert of

faithlessness and nourish us with the living water of your word,

that we may bring forth fruit that will last, in the name of Jesus

Christ our Saviour. Amen.

The author has stated that the Holy Spirit witnesses – testifies – to both Jesus’ baptism and his very human death on the cross. Now he speaks of the testimony of God the Father and of the Son. SECOND READING 1 John 5:9-13 ................................... John Wright

SERMON The Reverend Canon Christopher Pratt NICENE CREED

Let us confess our faith, as we say, We believe in one God, the

Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,

seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only

Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God,

Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the

power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin

Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under

Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third

day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he

ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the

dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy

Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.

With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He

has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We

acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look

for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to

come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE John Paul Markides In our prayers on this “Jerusalem and the Holy Land Sunday” Let us begin in prayer for a land… a land hallowed by the revelation of God through the ages a land bounded by an expanse of sea and the silence of desert a narrow land, at a crossroads of continents a land of milk and honey where the eternal Word of God, was heard, witnessed and known. Let us pray for this land called “holy” and for the multitudes of our world who look to it as the place of their spiritual origin, return, and culmination; Jew, Muslim, and Christian.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer. Let us pray for the peoples of this land all its peoples; in their history and yearnings, in their hopes and aspirations, and join them in their prayers for peace Let us hold them with the summons of the Hebrew poet, to pray for the peace of Jerusalem but let us pray, not just for peace, let us pray for a just peace let us pray for what can seem impossible a peace that may arise from justice, freedoms, healing and reconciliation, a peace born of stirring mutual regard and generous co-existence.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for the peace-makers for all in positions of responsibility and influence, in the countries of the Middle East and throughout our world, that their words and actions, emboldened by the Spirit might beat the swords into ploughshares and the land be furrowed for the human dignity of all.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer. Let us, (on this Jerusalem and the Holy Land Sunday) pray for the witness of the Church in this land For the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, our brothers and sisters in Christ, serving across this region in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories, that they might be strengthened in their commitment to foster healing, reconciliation, education and faithful witness to the Risen Christ. Let us pray for Archbishop Suheil Dawani, his clergy and staff, and the ministries extended by the diocese through multiple of schools, hospitals, clinics and homes for the aging. Let us pray for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, for Bishop Munib Younan, and the witness of his diocese, his clergy and people. Let us pray for a church that is Palestinian and Arab, in its life and witness to Jesus.

CONFESSION, ABSOLUTION AND EXCHANGE OF THE PEACE Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness. Silence is kept.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what

we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole

heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are

truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son

Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may

delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your

name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you

in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We are the body of Christ

His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you

And also with you.

THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST Offertory Sentence: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may they prosper who love you! (Psalm 122.6)

OFFERTORY HYMN 278 ............................... Jerusalem the Golden

PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. For us it becomes the bread of life.

Blessed be God forever. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. For us it becomes the cup of salvation.

Blessed be God forever.

SUPPLEMENTARY EUCHARISTIC PRAYER 3

The Lord be with you.

And also with you. Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right to thank you and praise you, holy and gracious God, creator of all things, ruler of heaven and earth, sustainer of life, for you are the source of all goodness, rich in mercy and abounding in love; you are faithful to your people in every generation, and your word endures for ever. Therefore with angels and archangels, with the fellowship of saints and the company of heaven, we glorify your holy name, evermore praising you and singing,

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might (x2), Hymnbook 735

Heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest (x2).

Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest (x2). We praise you, merciful Father, not as we ought, but as we are able, because in your tender love you gave the world your only Son, in order that the world might be saved through him. He made you known by taking the form of a servant, healing the sick, liberating the oppressed, reaching out to the lost. Betrayed, reviled, and nailed to the cross, he confronted the power of sin and disarmed it for ever. In his offering of himself, he became the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. Redeemed by Christ, we have been adopted as your children; by your pardon you have made us worthy to praise you. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” In obedience to him and with grateful hearts we approach your holy table, remembering our Saviour’s sacrifice, and rejoicing in his victory. Confident in his sovereign purpose, we declare our faith.

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Send your Holy Spirit on us that as we receive this bread and this cup we may partake of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. May we be renewed in his risen life, filled with love, and strengthened in our will to serve others; and make of our lives, we pray, a pure and holy sacrifice, acceptable to you, knitting us together as one in your Son Jesus Christ, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour

and glory, now and forever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER sung by everyone (music BAS p.918)

As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us

our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from

the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the

power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD 2 Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ we he gave for you and his blood which he shed for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. AGNUS DEI .................................................................. Hymnbook 747

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us.

COMMUNION HYMN 49 ..................................... Draw Near and Take CHOIR ANTHEM: If ye love me ............................................. P. Ledger POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Let us pray, Gracious Father, your love knows no limits. Fill our

hearts with your compassion; open our eyes to your presence

in the world; enlarge our minds to understand your will. Take

our hands and minister through them. Speak through our words

and direct our feet in the paths of peace That Christ may be

revealed in us And the world may believe. Amen.

Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more

than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to

generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever.

Amen.

CLOSING RESPONSE Pray not for Arab or Jew, for Palestinian or Israeli, but pray rather for ourselves, that we might not divide them in our prayers but keep them both together in our hearts. When races fight, peace be among us. When neighbours argue, peace be among us. When nations disagree, peace be among us. Where people struggle for justice, let justice prevail. Where Christ’s disciples follow, let peace be our way. Amen. BLESSING PARISH NOTICES

Let us pray for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, for Bishop Munib Younan, and the witness of his diocese, his clergy and people. Let us pray for a church that is Palestinian and Arab, in its life and witness to Jesus.

Lord in your mercy. Hear our prayer.**

Amen.

Amen.

CLOSING RESPONSE Pray not for Arab or Jew, for Palestinian or Israeli, but pray rather for ourselves, that we might not divide them in our prayers but keep them both together in our hearts. Parish Notices – May 17, 2015

Companions of Jerusalem: The Canadian Companions of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem is a national, voluntary body of members of the Anglican Church of Canada drawn together in common concern and support for the well-being of the Church in the land of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. All interested church members and others are encouraged to become a Companion, either as individual, parish or diocesan members. Companions provide leadership and support to our church’s growing partnership in mission and justice with the Diocese of Jerusalem, and enable a unified national response. Education, advocacy, pilgrimage and financial support to Diocese of Jerusalem ministries comprise the four key areas of Companions’ work. For more information see http://www.anglican.ca/relationships/programs/global-relations/jerusalem/companions A copy of the Terms of Reference of this body and membership applications are available at coffee hour and on the narthex table.

RED is the colour of fire! As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost on May 24, you are invited to wear the colour red to our Sunday services.

Visit the renewed church library in the upper parish hall. Consider... Adventures in Missing the Point by Brian McLaren and Tony Campolo. From Publisher’s Weekly: “Many Christians, argue McLaren and Campolo, have missed-and keep missing-the point of the very Gospel they are called to proclaim. They mistake the Bible for a simple answer book. They mistake salvation for political liberation or celestial fire insurance. They mistake worship for feelings of personal intimacy. But the emerging postmodern culture provides an opportunity and an impetus for the church to revisit some of these topics and discover again what the Gospel is all about.”

Habitat for Humanity Support Since 2005, St. John's has supported the Habitat for Humanity Build by providing lunch and snacks for a day. This year we have committed to once more provide food for volunteers on Tuesday May 26th at their build on Kehl St.

Because of new rules, we have been asked to provide food either prepared in our kitchen or store purchased. In order to provide for this parish outreach ministry, we need your financial support. Envelopes are available on the table in the Narthex. Please make cheques payable to St. John's ACW. Many thanks for your continued support.

Connections We have been blessed in recent weeks and months in having come to know a number of new folks who have found a spiritual home here at St. John's. Those who are new or relatively new to the St. John's community are encouraged to fill out a Connection Card (found in the pews) to ensure that they receive communications from the church, and to help us know how we can be of support to you on your spiritual journey.

A group consists of 2-3 people who will set up the coffee for the 10.00 a.m. service. We will provide 'training ' and instructions for each of you. All the supplies for Coffee Hour are contributed by the A.C.W. If you feel this is a way you could help please contact Maureen Lichti at 519-886-7342 or Enid Emery at 519-896-0637. We have also placed a sign-up sheet on the Narthex table. Thank you.
