A MESSAGE FROM

PASTOR FRED

The Mary Month of May

No, that is not a mistake. Roman Catholics dedicate the month of May to Mary the

mother of Jesus. Given that Mothers Day also falls in the month of May, we Lutherans

might give thought to Mary as we also celebrate Mothers Day.

First a disclaimer: Catholics do not pray to Mary anymore than we would when we ask a

friend to pray for us when we are in need. With that said, we Lutherans can reflect upon

Mary's life just as we would for anyone in Christian history whose life reflects a deep faith

in the resurrected Jesus.

Throughout my years of ministry I have observed mothers in a variety of ways. I have

stood at the grave site of a mom who lost not her first but her second stillborn child. I

have watched a mother of a twenty year old son hold his hand as he breathed his last. I

have felt my own daughter tremble with my arm around her shoulder as we watched her

own daughter fighting off a triple threat to her life, all the while knowing that there were

several other children in the hospital who did not survive. When a child's life is under

threat, mothers become she-lions in there effort to be protective.

Which brings us back to Mary. At the foot of the cross, helpless, unable to do anything

to protect her son. As such she is the symbol for all moms who undergo such torture.

The circumstances do not matter, the anguish is all the same. This is not to say that dads

do not suffer too. But they do not go through pregnancy, nine months of hope and worry

which creates a bond even before birth.

So, this year for Mothers Day sure, bring on the cards, the flowers, the candy, whatever.

And maybe this year a thought or two about Mary the mother of Jesus whose answer to

the angel - behold I am the servant of the Lord - brought forth the man from Nazareth

whose life would change the course of history.

Peace,

Pastor Fred

FREE MUSIC CAMP

July 16 – 20, 2018 at St. Luke’s!

Last July we held our first Summer Music Camp. Twenty-one youth from kindergarten to eighth grade attended the five-day camp. This year we will be holding our 2nd Annual FREE Summer Music Camp for children in grades K – 8 from July 16 – 20. During those days we will rehearse from 9 – 3 each day and then present “Once Upon a Parable” a biblical-based musical on Friday, July 20th at 6:30 pm. “Once Upon a Parable” is a 45 minute musical which features stories of Jesus such as: the wise man and the foolish man, the good Samaritan, the mustard seed, the parable of the vineyard, and the prodigal son, which is the centerpiece of the musical. Campers and volunteers may register for the camp at: https://goo.gl/forms/eNlxCJqd8luJRr3C3 Mark your calendars: IMANI MILELE Children’s Choir from Uganda

Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 7:00 pm Imani Milele is a team of passionate and determined individuals dedicated to working with Uganda's orphaned and many underprivileged children, enabling them to reach their full potential. Currently serving over 3000 children in Uganda, with the help of groups and individuals like you, we're forming a strong and passionate team helping to make a difference, one child at a time.

Hospitality is needed: 18 children in the choir and 8 chaperones need housing and breakfast for two nights (July 11 & 12.) Each house would need to house 2 – 3 children and 1 chaperone. Concerts and Recitals: St. Luke’s sanctuary serves as a wonderful recital hall for many musical concerts throughout the year. Check out the schedule of concert and recitals which Tammy Hammond dutifully updates regularly.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS

Would you like to place Flowers

on the Altar on Sunday?

If so, please sign up on the

Flower Chart in the Fellowship Hall.

Questions?

Please see the information below

or call the Office at 804-272-0486.

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are used

to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God and those who attend Worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor of” a

special person, an anniversary, birthday, birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may find a

certain date important so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed

directly from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered to the church. The flowers are yours to take home

after the service that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or homebound members. Please return the

container the flowers are in to the church at your convenience. You may sign up on the chart located in the fellowship hall.

The 2018 Flower Chart Calendar

The 2018 Flower Calendar is hanging in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday Altar Flowers, won’t you consider doing so? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. Flowers can be planned for a date on or near your special date, to occur yearly. Just let us know and we will automatically add your info to the Flower Calendar each year. If you have any questions or would like more information about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

OPEN FLOWER DATES AVAILABLE We still have dates available on the Flower Chart where no one has signed up to place flowers on the Altar.

These dates are July 29, September 9 and November 25. If you would like to put flowers on the altar for

one of those dates, please sign up on the Altar Flower Chart in the fellowship hall.

If you prefer a different date, please remember, Altar Flowers may be given in more than one name on any

given Sunday. For example, we love when we have two flower arrangements on Sunday. Remember, if your

date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office at 804-272-0486 to do so. Thank you.

The last day of Sunday School classes

before summer recess is May 20, 2018.

Many thanks to all of the teachers, helpers and parents

who give of their time and talents to make wonderful teachable

moments for our students and learners of all ages.

We couldn't do it without you!

Classes resume on "God's Work, Our Hands" Rally Day on September 9.

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study Class

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study Class is held Wednesday mornings from 10:30am to 11:30am. Please consider joining us for a weekly discussion on scripture. Pastor Fred uses a variety of study methods as we delve into the text of the bible. You don’t even need to bring a Bible if you don’t want to, we have plenty at church. Pastor Fred invites you to come and discover new insights into the Bible.

Pastor Fred’s last class before summer starts is May 23rd. Bible Study will resume after Rally Day.

NOTES FROM JO BLANDFORD, Learning Ministry Consultant

guest Lizzie Weast and her fabulous rescued “Therapy Dog” Sadie. They will join us in the

Senior High room for a special program on “Dogs Helping People” and “People Helping

Dogs”.

Please join us for both these great events! See you there!

Worship Service Assistants Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers and other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy. In our music department, we have Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members and all sorts of Musicians. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help. If you are interested in serving the Lord at our church and would like more info about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you. Please contact the following people: Pastor Fred Marcoux, [email protected] or Vince Reedinger, Worship and Music chair for more information about Worship. Please contact Richard Barnett, our Director of Music for more information about both of our choirs and the music department, [email protected]
