The Monthly Newsletter of Resurrection Lutheran Church

Psalm 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s People live together in unity!

The Psalm-writer expresses, in this very clear statement, the desire God has for each of us in our relationships – in our families, and in our church family; and in our spheres of influence in this community.

The days and months following the departure of Pastor Mark Drengler, who followed the Lord’s Call to a community of faith in Shawano, Wisconsin, became a time of reflecting, self-evaluation, concern, and a time of opportunity for individuals in the faith community at Resurrection Lutheran Church to step forward and offer their gifts, talents, time, and treasures.

This is not unlike the period experienced by the disciples and the early Church which followed our risen Lord Jesus Christ’s Ascension into Heaven.

Jesus knew of their circumstances – and He knows our situation. And so He prayed for the Early Church – and for us:

John 17:21 [I pray] that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in Me and I Am in You. May they also be in Us...

Similarly, just as the disciples “…all joined together constantly in prayer,” (Acts 1:14a); we at Resurrection Lutheran Church are continually joining together in prayer to lift up each other and to seek the Guidance of the Holy Spirit in all our endeavors; the gathered assembly of Worshippers join together weekly in prayer and petition; small groups and other prayer groups are also sharing in seeking the Will of the Lord.

So, why is it important – during these warm, relaxing Summer days – that we faithfully attend Worship Services and support the ministries of service and outreach at Resurrection Lutheran Church?

Acts 2:42, 46-47 [Like the disciples, so we…] They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

We are in a period of discernment, which – after the Holy Spirit works to bring the Senior Pastor the Lord has pre-ordained to serve as the shepherd of His flock here at Resurrection Lutheran Church – will become a period of transition.

During this period, it is important that we each take seriously the inspired exhortations of Paul:

1 Corinthians 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

Philippians 2:2-4 Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Page 3 June 2019

And so we continue to pray that this confessional community of faith at Resurrection Lutheran Church work together and exemplify the spirit of unity – especially during the interim.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the people You have divinely placed in our lives who speak truth, love, and words of wisdom. Give us a heart of discernment to know when You are using someone to speak guidance into our hearts and our circumstances; and give us the strength and courage to follow the Leading of Your Holy Spirit, even when it’s hard – or different then what we desire. Fill us with peace in knowing that You work good in all things through Jesus Christ our Lord. In His Name we pray, Amen.

- Bob Unger, Director of Worship and Music

Every child deserves a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Unfortunately, far too many children across the U.S. are sleeping on couches, blankets, or on the floor. Durham's new chapter of the national organization, Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), is working diligently to provide beds for children in need in the Triangle area. RLC wants to help spread the love of Jesus in a very tangible way by joining SHP for Bunks Across America National Build Day.

Call Committee Update

By faith, we recognize that our Heavenly Father has already determined who will be our new Senior Pastor. The Call Committee was established by the Church Council, and our role is to be led by the Holy Spirit in the process of selecting one or more candidates for interviewing.

Call Committee has held video calls with 11 candidates and has begun to prayerfully evaluate these candidates. The Committee is collaborating with staff and Pastor Merker (Circuit Visitor) before making recommendation of which candidates to bring to RLC for in-person visit. The Committee anticipates recommending 2 to 3 for in-person visits.

More details can be found in the announcements and the RLC website, scroll to bottom of home page.

“Our Light” – Congregational Highlights

Each month we are going to try to capture many of the highlights in our church, especially noting how we serve each other and our community. For the last month, some, but certainly not all, include the following:

1. Special thanks to everyone who made our Lenten journey very special, especially the Easter Celebration.

2. Have you noticed some of the younger age children doing special songs at worship – we can all sing to the Glory of God.

3. Did anyone notice we had a new substitute organist in one of our traditional services – Thanks, Mark.

4. A new service opportunity is unfolding – Sleep in Heavenly Peace – a program where bunk beds are made, mattress and bedding materials provided to children who do not have a bed. Thanks to those who are helping to organize this special June event.

5. Thanks to our last group of Adult Sunday school teachers. We continue to find members who step up to lead a class.

6. Our Finance Committee has worked ‘behind the scenes’ to play a key role in helping the Council develop our new budget, which starts July 1st.

7. What a blessing to add 9 new families to RLC, with special thanks to those who are their membership partners.

8. Over 100 members turned out for our annual Operation Inasmuch Saturday. Several new service areas were highlighted.

9. We had another large Confirmation class. Thanks to the program organizers, teachers, and many others who supported this program and for the inspired faith statements by our confirmands.

10. We are thankful to Mel Tolliver for leading both the Tues AM and Crossways classes.

11. Our Call Committee continues to work diligently and prayerfully in moving through their process to identify potential Senior Pastor candidates. We are thankful for their continued dedication and updates.

12. We had a great CommUNITY service this past Sunday. Thanks for all the hard work of the Staff to put this together and the blending of the various musical groups.

13. RLS had a large turnout for the Fine Arts Night – if you have a chance, stop by the gym to see the student’s artwork.

14. RLS held its first Grandparents Day – very large turnout and lots of positive feedback.

15. RLP continues to serve the needs of our community – over 85% of attendees are from non-member families.

16. Thanks to two RLP teachers who recently retired with forty years of faithful combined service.

17. When you come to church this Sunday, notice how nicely to how the bushes have been trimmed. Thanks to a special “elf” for all the hard work. To share a “Light” experience, please send your note to [email protected].

Children and Family Ministry

Children's Church for ages 3-6, takes place weekly during the 10:45 service.

The children are dismissed before the sermon for 20 minutes to gather together for a short lesson or story about the theme of the day. They will work on a craft and/or sing a song that goes along with the story. This time will help grow their faith.

If you would like to help lead Children's Church, the Children and Family Ministry has resources and can help you in the process. The leader does have flexibility with crafts or songs according to what they are most comfortable.

Middle school students or older elementary students are welcome to be assistants, we'd love to have your help! Feel free to join the kids as they head out.

All interested adults or high school students, please contact [email protected] or [email protected].

COME ROAR WITH US THIS SUMMER AT VBS!

Registration is open! Forms are available at info centers in the Narthex and Family Life Center.

We are also looking for volunteers for both sessions, morning and evening. Contact Susan Richard or Lea Webb.

Although we are just beginning summer, it is not too early to start thinking about how you can be involved at RLC this fall!

Wednesday Night Workshop (preparation for confirmation for grades 5th-8th) begins after Labor Day. Much of the 5th grade study is done at home, partnering parents with guidance and direction from the church. The 6th-8th grade students meet for class led by an instructor and supported with small group leaders. If interested in more information regarding confirmation or any of these positions, please contact [email protected].

Nursery Care

Over the summer, we will have nursery coverage during the 9:30 am service only. Participation is typically very low and this will also give our care providers some time off.

We want all to know that children are welcome in all of our worship services! God loves the little children, and so do we! If there is ever a time that you feel your child needs a "break", feel free to use the nursery/preschool room during Sanctuary services and Room 151 in the Family Life Center during the praise & worship service (this service is typically streamed into that room).

As a reminder, there are rainbow bags available in both locations filled with books and other small items for the children to use during service. There are also books and often weekly handouts for the kids on the tables outside of the Sanctuary and Family Life Center. Please, help yourself!

Student Ministry

We have officially ended a successful year of Breakaway events and now are looking forward to exciting times this summer as some of us head off to Appalachia Service Project (ASP) in June and more of us head off to Minneapolis, Minnesota for National Youth Gathering (NYG) in July. As we go off on our adventures this summer, we will be going out with the joy of Christ and being led forth in His peace.

“For you shall go out with Joy and be led forth in peace.” Isaiah 55:12

This will be our new theme going forward for Breakaway. When we serve in our church and community, when we go on missions, when we play, and when we pray, we will do it with Joy. The joy that comes from serving an amazing creator!
