Vermicomposting is an innovative pro-cess for treating municipal waste, car-ried out by the action of earthworms. Being more effective in reducing the environmental costs. The AMAVE says the equipment is “unique in the world” and is ready to receive 1,500 tons per year. For now, this is a “pilot”that the same organization has put in place to aid the company’s technological Lavoisier (who has the technical moni-toring of Quercus). As he explained Ricardo Pesqueira of Lavoisier, the worms digest the organic matter in municipal solid waste, turn-ing them into humus (organic fertilizer). Also, clean the animals’ potential recy-clables “so that the end of the process, the recovery rate of materials is 80 percent. The low costs and speed the process are reasons that the president of the Association of Municipalities of Vale do Ave (AMAVE), Antonio Magal-haes, spoke to say that a project is “to continue on another level and another dimension. “

undifferentiated dumped waste are first homogenized and then sanitized. Once the worms are “sensitive to odors. “This process goes on for two or three weeks. In the end, the temperature rises and as a consequence, the worms digest the waste, and at this stage that we observe the production of humus. It should also be noted that the a ani-

The Lavoisier will in this summer (2009) a unit of its kind in Beja, ready to receive 150 000 tonnes per year. Was similarly introduced a new line of packaging waste sorting and a sorting platform. Rui Campos referred to them as a “new phase”to “provide better ser-vice to the community, “which will lead to lower prices.“Our intention is that we have at the end of the concession, a rate that is more attractive for citizens, “said Ma-gellan, stating that the grant ends in October 2009.The choice of the title of the magazine, “Worms Magazine “, was obtained just after the discovery of this innovative process, based on concepts surround-ing “sustainability. “

Do you think the design / architec-ture can contribute to solving the problem of the ozone hole with sus-tainability policies? In my view, the graphic designer / il-lustrator can contribute at least two ways: First, can conceive of the objects, taking into account ecological values. That is, choosing materials and produc-tion techniques that involve the least possible environmental impact. More-over, the designer is uniquely placed to deliver this message because green is the person who communicates and influences the client, the producer and, ultimately, the target audience.

Have these concerns as a designer and illustrator?I try to have, obviously, in what I can. Not always clear that these concerns are reflected in the subject of my work because, unfortunately, there are still many economic constraints and their

INTERVIEW WITH THE DESIGNER AND ILLUSTRATOR SANTOS, FEDRA

The Portuguese Fedra Santos, 29, designer and illustrator, has provided the magazine Worm Magazine an exclusive interview where he presents a personal idea about sustain-

able design and the subsequent opinion on the same topic.

weight is too large.Although I like a lot of my work, the field of design, yet manages to leave me many times with the “guilty con-science”. I realize many times (too often!) the amount of unnecessary materials that are produced and the lack of ecological awareness that exists in people in general. Even, there have been times when I thought to give up and move to an area “most helpful” to the planet. But, at this point, I force myself to think that I can still have my role in sustainable design, even in little things, even if only in part to “get the message. “

Knowing who is at the stage of creat-ing the eco-product profile is plotted as the designer can contribute? The designer is, as I said, in a privileged position, since it works in the initial phase of the creation process. Dur-ing this stage, the object begins to be thought of a more concrete form. Regardless of briefings and market-ing studies that may be delivered, the “passing thought to the concrete” is the responsibility of the designer. I think it’s also at this stage that the designer’s way of thinking can be crucial to the ecological.

Page 9: Worms Magazine

Find interesting the creation of the worm magazine as the magazine that aims to contribute to the harmoniza-tion between the economic, cultural and sustainable through the devel-opment of only single jobs or jobs with sustainable design concerns in this field? As a graphic designer and illustrator as he sees the possibil-ity of our magazine have a positive impact in this environment?Although not very up for the magazine market, I think a magazine with such concerns can only be welcomed. I be-lieve we will have a positive impact and attract the attention of designers and non-designers. The dissemination and sharing of new ideas that contribute to a greener world is essential to every-thing that has been done so far can be improved.

Taking into account the various ex-perience as a designer and illustrator sees as sustainable graphic design in Portugal and its feasibility?Portugal is still a country with a poor visual culture. In addition, the design is still seen as an area where “everybody can get the scoop. “ Anyone without graphics training gives his opinion and improperly interferes with the work of the designer. And often, the designer’s job is not the result of a communication peaceful, harmonious and fruitful with his client, but rather a series of inter-ference are difficult to manage (and swallow!). Alia is this a poor ecological awareness of population

overall economic vision and a very selfish. It is easy to see that sustainable design in Portugal will take a long hard road ahead. But I think it all depends on time and perseverance of those involved in disclosure.

Do you think the design is or may be an important contribution to sustain-able development?Yes, certainly. The quantity and diver-sity of materials used in graphic design is enormous and, moreover, is an area where you can easily fall into consum-erism. If there is a strong ecological consciousness on the part of those who work in this area (designer and client), there are strong chances of making “mistakes”, for example, producing un-necessary materials, choosing materials with great longevity for objects of low durability and vice versa.

What is the leaf? The leaf is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote among profes-sionals and students linked to the area of graphic design in Portugal and in countries Luso-descendants, about who can adopt sustainable practices in their workplace.Leaf, from Latin folia, leaf vegetable can mean both as paper. It is therefore a very interesting name for such an orga-nization, as is the role of the key points to keep in consigeração practice of graphic design and leaf vegetable can always represent the thousands of trees to be spared if we adopt a sustainable environment in our work. How did you come?It all starts with recycling at home, saving energy and water. After the need of wanting to help, worsens with requests for help desperate people as members of Greenpeace and many others who go out every day for almost street clothes with plastic bags to shout words of revolution as “save the planet “Or,” save the whales, pandas ... and other animals too. “Those angry cries went into my ears and never seemed to want to leave. Voices withinda minha cabeça sussurravam-me que também eu, devia fazer mais para mudar o mundo e que resolvi eu fazer? Inscrevi-me na newsletter da Green-

my head whispering to me that I too, should do more to change the world and decided that I do? I signed up for the newsletter of Greenpeace and another date websites with the word green tree in your name. I started to watch documentaries like Zeitgeist and revolutionaries never been the same. Friends and acquaintances describe me as the girl card and things sustainable and soon I will start living in a tree in the light of fireflies in the park’s biologi-cal Gaia.

When the opportunity to choose any subject for a final draft of the course in Graphic Design and Advertising of ESEIG (Vila do Conde), I did not hesitate and shoved me in sustainability.

I had heard of (just) that the graphic designer could do more to use recycled paper in its work to help the environ-ment and then, curiosity and the need to learn more about sustainable graph-ic design, made me move forward with this project in order ultimately inform not only myself but also others that are interested (or not) this hasa.

We live in a world where fashion has an important role as a builder and image as perception of quality and modernity. Beautiful, practical, functional, modern, durable and useful are some charac-teristics inherent in our acceptance or otherwise of certain products.

The term sustainable design has re-cently emerged with the purpose of bringing a new concept that included the meanings of two words. The term design means the act of designing, developing or creating, always search-ing for the evolution of what already exists. Already the word sustainable in the new concept applied to it, is to do something considering its three aspects: economically viable, socially just and environmentally sound - The Triangle of Sustainability.

Products designed within the vision of sustainable design must respect the concern with the environment, thereby reducing the problems of extraction of raw materials and energynecessária para sua fabricação.

These products must also be economi-cally accessible to as many people as possible. Dealing with the social as-pects in a broader way. Finally, they must also fulfill a fundamental and basic function: to bring the well-being and satisfaction to those who use them.

The concept of the 3Rs (Rs) (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) must be present in the products developed within the vi-sion of sustainable design. These prod-ucts, when in its design phase, should already be prepared for possible reuses for its primary function. With a durabil-ity to avoid low utilization and use of materials that allow for recycling.

The sustainable design projects in the present with eyes in the future. This statement seeks to place both times, present and future exist simultaneously, because the needs that led to their con-struction shall consider all aspects and their impacts on now and then.

The phases of the life cycle of a product are the extraction of raw materials, pro-duction with its energy consumption, distribution to final consumers, their use and, ultimately, their final destina-tion. The main objective of sustainable design is to reduce the most of the environmental impact of this product in all its phases.

Firstly it is necessary to understand the remarkable character that packages are functional. Those getting the category of recyclables, that is, objects being where it is feasible to transform them, add several particularities. Do not cre-ate garbage, the customer is grateful for a different project and brand takes more space inside, not ending in brass trash.

With this concept, the Englishman Steve Haslip, created the project (which is highlighted in the pictures) that en-ables the transformation of bottles on hangers. A concept purely sustainable, made from recycled material. And also point out that it has qualified in first place in 2007, the competition D & AD Student Awards.

Made from recycled sails, the Sakku are not just for storing personal items or other place where you want in a suit-case. With an integrated solar panel on the outside flap, lets go a lot further with their digital devices.

The functional principle is very simple: Solar cells transform sunlight into elec-tricity. Thus, simply connecting your digital device via USB, then a lighter or battery sold separately.

Thus, electricity is guaranteed! While there is solar radiation (ie all day), devic-es like MP3, iPod, PDA, GPS, cellphone, digital camera, can be reloaded.

This project, purely sustainable is al-ready on sale, the products come from Switzerland.

Amendment of an amazing proposal Design Studio - the Wasup - designed by Sevin Coskun. It is an innovative product, as yet only conceptual, which includes a washing machine and a toilet.

The idea is simple, these two products to acolocar can take waste water, wash clothes, to feed the discharge of the toilet. Thus, we help the planet and contribute to a responsible water use. In addition to this huge advantage, this solution might be very interesting for those who dwell in small apartments where there is room to place large ap-pliances.

From the standpoint of ergonomics may still argue that the high position of the machine, ensures a correct posture during tasks to load and unload the machine with the laundry.

That serves the human being, and man-kind in general, give intensely concepts such as the preservation of the environ-ment, global warming, among many other words with similar meaning that house?Yes, because the reality is that every day we are opposed to these concerns with attitudes that already find their solution in sight. As an example, why spend printing and paper unnecessarily, when Fischer Portugal created a green card.

With business cards, often required by many colleges and singularities, this process unnecessary expense of pa-per, it happens! Since they are usually printed numbers that are never used, giving a unique way to this rubbish, garbage.

It was with this purpose that came an idea for an environmental consultant, Portugal Fischer, who created the eco card, which uses any piece of paper, which invariably would be discarded as a platform.

BOTTLES THAT SAWTOYSBÉHAR, YVES

Designer Yves Behar, Y-shaped bottles are conceptualized in the concern of the cycle of plastic packaging. Made from 100% recyclable plastic, the bottles can be commonly used as pack-aging for liquids, and then, instead of going straight into the trash, they earn a special destiny.

When they become empty in construc-tion toys, everything that children like to do: create, imagine, fantasize!

The Y shape allows these connections are made at three points of the object, giving unusual shapes and situations and endless possibilities for creativity in a child (or adult).

PEDO BIKEHOERZ, ERICH

The PedoBike, Erich Hoerz, a bike is modular and artesal made of wood. It has various accessories that can be placed or withdrawn according to the will and desire of the child.

The company responsible, Holz-Hoerz states aim to use as little plastic as pos-sible, so that 90% of its products are made of birch wood in Finland, grown and harvested sustainably. And his finish does not take varnish that could be toxic to the environment, being replaced by linseed oil.

The rubber used in some parts of the bicycle is also free of toxins and all sup-pliers of Holz-Hoerz are local, reducing thereby the carbon emissions caused by transportation of any raw material from one location to another.

The sustainability of PedoBike is also on its durability. Resistant material that promises to last for years, moreover, as the child grows the bike will be adapt-ed, as its mounting system to increase the height of the handlebars and seat, but also make wheels for the exchange of larger rims.

For the attentive, the PedoBike has no pedals, but this creation is completely intentional, the company claims that this characteristic has the function of improving the child’s sense of balance.

Since direct exposure, you can run your appliances indefinitely.

Unsurprisingly this wave entering sustainable concepts in traditional and unusual objects.

Even more so when we refer to the con-cept of rational use of energy sources, particularly fossil fuels and electricity.

Daniel Schipper, creator of the small greenhouse, designed this piece for lovers of botany who live in big cities and into small spaces. The piece is light, flexible and modular, giving the possibility to fit it anywhere in your home. The piece titled “Folding Greenhouse”is made entirely of recycled plastic, and its folds consist of concepts so easy as the origami the very basics.

FOLDING GREENHOUSE

From designer Amy Hunting, furnishings are a result of collection and recycling of wood waste from factories in Denmark. Thousands of scraps that were thrown in the trash were materials research and development for new parts. We have developed simple furnishings such as chairs, lamps, and a “nightstand” for books and magazines.

RECICLANDO MADEIRA

The designers Pierre Andre Senizergues and Gil Le Bon LaPointe, innovated with the concept of a skateboard recycled. The pieces are a collection of recycled skateboards modern furniture and contemporary of renowned architects and designers in history, and the seats are made of neoprene. So this piece was inspired by Le Corbusier.Where in its entirety, the work of the Skate Study House, to discuss common themes known designers, major films, and outstanding mobile.

Not today that concern with the envi-ronment. A company has developed a system of construction of green roofs made from recycled material, bringing great advantages thermal, acoustic, energy saving, and of course, quality of life.

The system consists of a modular tile, the Ecotelha, which is produced from a rigid substrate made of lightweight concrete with aggregate EVA recycled fibers and expansions, particular veg-etation family crassulacean and sub-strates.Plants selected for the Green Roof have the mechanism of photosynthesis called crassulacean acid metabolism, which makes them resistant to drought. They close their stomata during the day and gas exchange during the night so as not to lose water, thus causing a slower metabolism.

The piece is sold ready, get out of the nursery business (planted and rooted) direct to be fixed in the existing roof.

According to the company, adds Eco-telha nutrients that provide rain water retention and drainage of the surplus, thus preventing erosion and helping to curb flooding in large cities due to retention.

Ecological Roof

GREEN ROOF

The Ecological roof can be placed over any existing roof, or asbestos cement 6mm or more in thickness, ceramic tiles, concrete slab or pre-molded structure to receive this load, because m² weighs about 50kg.

Between the tiles and the current is Ecotelhado HDPE geomembrane placed 0.5 mm to increase the tightness of the system and felt a blanket to keep moisture, ideal reserve of nutrients.

For the idle, maintaining the green tile is almost nonexistent - pruning and watering - due to the type of plant used in the product.

There will be several areas in the garden such as: Zone of herbs, flow-ers zone, agricultural zone, an area of orchards and recreation area.

This intervention aims to create be-tween the existing and new, a harmo-nious connection of all through the materials and color. For this we created a basement with stone flooring and color of the new gray building.

The physical connection between the two buildings was created in an orange visor reception marking and forming the element of surprise and exception of the intervention. In the existing building will be restored throughout the roof, tiles and exterior finishes and interior design.

The blade runs in painted wood. The new building will run on hydraulic lime mud and its exterior painted in gray and white interior. The model of the rooms will be as follows: entrance hall and dressing area with a bank (4.40 m2), full bathroom (3.74 m2) and sleep-ing area (11.7 m2). In inland areas will have natural lighting overhead.

The terrace is on a wooden deck with sun protection fabrics. In the winter will be collected to allow the sun to help heat the building.
