Airports are high-risk areas, withmany people coming, going andmoving around in confined spaces.Security is a prioritized issue of growing importance with eachadditional threat and incidentreported in the world.

Practical security solutions at today’sairports need to fulfill a variety of functions. They should answer the growing demandsof airport operators and legislators, whilesimultaneously addressing the needs ofpassengers, airport visitors and personnel.

Airports should allow for flexible scaling todeal with peaks and lows – over years aswell as a single day.

Solutions should be robust, safe and offera long service life. They should be compatible with the access authorizationof particular groups of persons and thepublic. Public and restricted areas atairports must be strictly separated. Theyshould also provide effective security andan early warning system that alerts peopleto threats such as fire or smoke, combinedwith a logical rescue and escape concept.Detailed individual solutions are often

demanded within the overall concept tomeet these complex requirements.Individual tasks that must be realizedrange from locking systems with integratedaccess control to escape routes andautomatic door surveillance.

HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL Hong Kong International Airport is

one of the most important international passenger and cargo hubs. With an

average of more than 600 aircraft taking off and landing daily, it ranks as the

world’s fifth busiest international passenger airport and most active worldwide

air cargo operation. ASSA ABLOY has supplied the airport with exit devices.

"Our annual security audit showed that we had to further improve security

for access between the Arrival and Departure areas, while still ensuring safe

exit in case of emergency," says Ricky Leung, Chief Engineer at the Airport

Authority. "We chose ASSA ABLOY exit devices for their superior quality and

aesthetics but also because ASSA ABLOY could modify the product to

accommodate our existing control and monitoring system."

MADRID BARAJAS INTERNATIONAL The new terminal at Madrid

Barajas International Airport in the Spanish capital of Madrid, designed by

the renowned English architect Richard Rogers and the Lamela studio, is

considered one of the most architecturally ambitious in the country. It covers

150,000 square meters, equivalent to 15 football fields, and will be able to

cope with the more than 42 million passengers expected in 2012.

ASSA ABLOY has been involved in refitting the terminal’s main buildings,

supplying and installing all iron fittings in the Parking and Satellite buildings

and taking total responsibility for the Satellite building. ASSA ABLOY also

supplied fittings for clients within the terminal building.

ZURICH AIRPORT Zurich is one of the ten largest European airports.

A total of 62,000 passengers passes daily through its halls and corridors, as

well as 6,000 employees who have varying access rights. ASSA ABLOY was

employed to deploy the escape route technology that is so vital to airports,

above all for fire protection.

The technology installed at Zurich Airport is based on an extensive

catastrophe/fire protection evacuation concept with a control system in

which every escape door is equipped with a control terminal and an

emergency button. This not only means that a door can be centrally

controlled but also that it can be opened quickly and easily by an emergency

button located next to the door.

Many doors are equipped with a card reader so that airport personnel with

appropriate access rights can open the door at all times. Authorized persons

can also open specific doors with a key for a limited period of time before an

alarm is triggered. In order to prevent escape doors from being opened by

non-authorized persons, the terminal immediately emits a loud acoustic

alarm signal and transmits a warning to the central control system when the

emergency button is pressed.

There are numerous and varyingairport checkpoints, including doors, gates, desks, throughways andemergency exits. Consequently, thezones they separate require specificlevels of control.

The challenge is to offer security atthe appropriate level in each zone, and to control the passage betweenthem, without hindering thenecessary logistic flow. The securitysolutions also need to be flexible, allowing for rapid response increasesand reductions in relation to trafficdemands.

Effective inspection, surveillance andcontrol of all access routes at an airportrequire the utilization of a variety of accesssystems and the issuing of differentaccess authorization. All entrances, doorsand throughways must be integrated in asingle locking system and incorporate anescape route concept that functionsreliably, even in cases of mass panic.

Fire protection should also be included inthe overall concept. Automation offrequently-used entrances and through-ways has a positive influence on alreadylarge-scale movement of the public, making it smoother and safer.

ASSA ABLOY offers a full range of securitysolutions to meet these needs, using thelatest technology and pooling knowledgefrom the entire group.

Appropriate levels of security in and between zones Functionality at every checkpoint

MAIN ENTRANCE DOORS

The frequency of use of the main entrance area of an airport is enor-

mous, and opening of this access doorshould be realized with as little contact aspossible. This door should also functionreliably as an emergency exit.

HIGH SECURITY DOORS

Authorized personnel can gainaccess through an access control

system in transitional zones between publicareas, non-public areas and air trafficzones. Moreover, doors in these sensitiveareas are securely locked with electricalsecurity locks. Authorized passengersgain access to the check-in area usingtheir airline ticket or through control ofbiometric characteristics.

EMERGENCY EXITS

These doors have to ensure that everyone can exit a building easily in

case of emergency or panic. They have toopen at all times in the direction of the flowwithout manual assistance even if the doorcannot be opened from the other side.

SUB-ENTRANCE DOORS

Sub-entrance doors should only be accessible to authorized persons

and designed to close automatically andsecurely after use. Additional accesscontrol can be installed at special sub-entrance doors. These doors also act asemergency exits.

STAFF ENTRANCES

Airport employees must identifythemselves to access control

systems at these doors. Access is grantedif the person is authorized. Personnelentrances lock automatically after openingand incorporate emergency exit functions.

GENERAL DOORS

WC doors and cleaning rooms are secured with simple locks and

integrated in the building locking system.WC doors providing access to thedisabled should facilitate and ensure thecomfort of wheelchair occupants, elderlypeople and the disabled. They are openedautomatically with a large elbow button. An emergency button must be providedfor rapid unlocking in the event of anemergency.

We can provide you with alarge range of innovative systems andproducts and cooperate with you todevelop an individual solution thataddresses your wishes and needs. These range from sophisticated sys-tems for centralized and decentralizedaccess control incorporating doorautomation, to escape route andemergency exit technology products.

LOCKING SYSTEMS WITH ACCESS CONTROL

Locking system networks with integratedaccess control for individual buildingsectors, public and non-public areas canbe realized with products provided by theASSA ABLOY Group. The system itself

assumes responsibility for access control, including locking and unlocking, automa-tically monitoring all doors and locks anddocumenting all events. Electromechanicallocking cylinders enable an extremelyflexible locking system design. Accessauthorization and limitations can be entereddirectly or deleted from the program inlocks of this nature. The software alsoprovides the operator with a centralizedkey registration and de-registration option.

DOOR CLOSERS Sliding rail door closersfor outer and inner doors close the doorautomatically. In addition to providingdoor security, door closers on fireprotection doors ensure that fires cannotspread easily to other parts of the building.

PANIC LOCK SYSTEMS A patented lockingmechanism with tilt and rotating catchfunctions form the core of the panic locksystem. The new locking mechanismfinally solves problems relating to forcereduction caused by friction between thelock catch, bolt and striking plate. Thisprevents blocking occurring where extremepressure is exerted (e.g. where largegroups of people are pressing in panicagainst an escape door).

RESCUE AND ESCAPE ROUTE TECHNOLOGY

Electric escape door control systems pro-vided by ASSA ABLOY ensure that emer-gency exits can be used safely in cases ofdanger, regardless of the automaticlocking mechanism utilized or the absenceof authorization. Utilization of absolutelysecure technology can save lives!
