WORLD YOUTH DAY CELEBRATION ON PALM SUNDAY
March 20. 2016
DIAGRAM OF CAPITOL STEPS
BLESSING OF PALMS—3:00 PM
People will probably begin arriving
between 1:30 and 2:00 pm at the
Capitol steps at the intersection of
State and 3rd Streets.
The assembly will be standing on
the steps toward the top of the
Capitol steps and facing 3rd Street.
Our sound system will be on the
landing to one side with Music
Ministry microphones and inputs
available.
An additional microphone will be
placed at blue M for the
proclamation of the first Gospel
reading.
At 2:00 pm: outside Music Ministry
will begin playing prelude music.
At 2:00 pm—a few priests will be in
place at the top of Capitol Steps for
Confession. See P’s at the top.
At 2:55 the WYD Cross and
Banners will leave the Cathedral
arriving and placing themselves at
the edge of the landing facing the
Capitol Building.
The cross will be at the x and will
be flanked by banners on either side.
At 2:55 pm the priests, the altar
servers, the cross bearers and lectors
will leave the Cathedral and process
to the steps.
When the outside Music Ministry
can see this group moving down
State Street, they will begin
“Hosanna”.
Celebrant, the priests, the Deacons,
and the altar servers will be in front
of the cross near the microphone M.
All of the concelebrating priests will
be on the landing on either side of
the cross
At approximately 3 pm we will have
the sprinkling rite (in silence)
followed by the first gospel reading
by the Deacon. The Bishop may
choose to give a short reflection.
At approximately 3:15 pm the entire
group will move in procession to the
Cathedral as follows: Incense, cross,
banners, altar servers, lectors, con-
celebrants, celebrant and then con-
gregation.
When the group begins to move in
procession, the outside Music
Ministry will begin singing.

Liturgical Procession
The Liturgical procession
will leave the Cathedral
at 2:55 pm to arrive at the
Capitol steps by 3:00 p.m.
Proceed up State St.
cross State so that you
can approach the steps
from the center.
The processional cross
and altar servers should
place themselves directly
in front of the WYD
cross ON THE LANDING.
Lectors should split and
go to either side of the
altar servers between the
banners and the congre-
gation.
Concelebrants should
split and flank the Bishop
on either side.
The Bishop will move to
the direct center near the
microphone.

Inside Ushers will assist with seating.
Wheelchair access is through the left side of the
Cathedral, and seating will be in the front pews on the
left front of the center aisle.
We need (8/9) seats reserved near the back of the
Church for the Cross Bearers and the
Diocesan Banner Bearers.
Put (7) reserved seats in front of first pew near the
Blessed Mother for the lectors.
We also need seats reserved in the back for the Gift
Bearers (6) and the Inside Ushers (20).
If we can, we’ll try to get those who enter through the
left most door to go up the left aisle and sit in left side
pews against the wall. We’ll try to get those who enter
the second from the left door to go up center aisle and
sit in center pews. We’ll try to get those who enter
through the middle door to go up the right side aisle
and sit on the right side pews against the wall.

Movement of Cross & Banners
ENTERING CATHEDRAL (WYD Cross and all Banners will enter through center doors while carrying things.)
As the procession enters the Cathedral, the WYD
cross and Diocesan Banners will go straight to the al-
tar, and place the cross and banners on the left side of
the Cathedral. Carriers should then proceed to the
reserved seats in the back of the Cathedral by way of
the wheelchair ramp and then outside to go through
the Holy Door.

The parish/school banners will approach the altar and
then go to place their banners near the Piano and
then go outside to State Street to re-enter the
Cathedral by way of the Holy Door.
(blue arrows)
Parish and School carriers should rejoin and sit with
their groups.
Parish and School carriers should stay inside the
Church with their groups until after the final blessing.
After the final blessing, carriers may move to their
banners near the piano and wait for the signal to
process out of the church.

INSIDE USHERS
ENTRANCE TO CATHEDRAL
We need ushers in the Narthex of the Church from 2:00 pm until
3:00 pm to help people find the bathroom and meetings, etc.
BACK Ushers - Should direct people to the front ushers to fill
in from the front. They should also try to prevent crossover.
SIDE USHERS – NEAR ALTAR - Try to keep people that
accessed the Church by the side aisle in the side pews, and those
who enter by way of the center aisle into the center pews.
SPECIAL NEEDS USHERS - The usher nearest to the Holy
Door (outside) should watch for anyone in a wheelchair and escort
them to the special needs seating on the front left by way of the
wheel chair ramp on the side of the cathedral. There is no wheel-
chair access to the Holy Door.
MIDDLE USHERS – should fill the center pews from front to
back and encourage people to keep moving.
SIDE USHERS – should fill the side pews from front to back
and encourage people to keep moving.
NOTE: NARTHEX USHERS & BACK USHERS should remind
people who enter through the center aisle to sit in center sections
and people who enter through side aisles to sit in the side sections
to try to prevent crossover. These ushers should also be ready
to allow the WYD Cross and all banners to enter through
center exterior doors and then encourage the rest of the
congregation to enter through the Holy Door.

OFFERTORY COLLECTION
USHERS - during the General Intercessions,
ushers should be in the center and side aisles
ready to pass the baskets through the
congregation.
Section1 - will have 1 usher to collect from the
entire left side aisle.
Section 2 - will have 2 ushers, one in the center
aisle and one in the side aisle
Section 3 - will have 2 ushers, one in the center
aisle and one in the side aisle.
Section 4 - will have 1 usher to collect from the
entire right side aisle.

Communion
We will only have Communion under one species–
- the Precious Body
Designated Priests will meet ushers in front of the
altar and be directed to move to the back center
aisle Communion station of the
Cathedral first
Communion stations will all be on the + + center
aisles. (one priest will be sent to the choir on the
altar near the Ambo)
There will be three priests and the bishop near the
altar (+) and two at the break in the pews. (+)
The people will approach using the center aisle and
return the using the side aisles.
Side aisle Ushers ( U ) should direct people seated
in the side pews.
Everyone will return to their seats from the side
aisles
Ushers should move back to next pew as each pew
is emptied.
Front left ushers– please be aware of the wheel-
chairs. Communion ministers should serve these
people first.
5 of the Ushers will serve as escorts for the priests
during communion. Please position yourself near

Movement of Cross & Banners
LEAVING CATHEDRAL
After the Bishop’s remarks, the WYD Cross
carriers and the Diocesan Banner carriers
should approach the altar via the wheelchair
ramp. The cross should move to the front of
the altar and turn to face the altar. (at the x )
(follow red arrows); then the Parish/School
banner carriers move to their banner and pro-
ceed down the right side aisle toward the altar,
lining up in the front of the cathedral.
(follow blue arrows)
When the MC gives the ‘go-ahead’ the cross
turns and slowly begins down the aisle
followed by the banners, two-by-two.
Two DYC members will lead WYD Cross &
Diocesan Banners the rest of the banners and
the congregation to Hilton Hotel, via the
ROAD access to the Capitol-NOT THE
STEPS!!
You will be lead to the location where
banners will be placed in the Hilton.
