World War One Service Personnel

Intention to Marry Applications 1914-1918

Each year New Zealanders commemorate Anzac day and celebrate

Valentine’s Day.

The first Anzac day in New Zealand was held on the 25 April 1916 to

commemorate the first anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14 February each year. An early

martyrdom story included a written account of Saint Valentine of Rome’s

imprisonment for performing weddings for soldier who were forbidden to

marry.

In New Zealand when couples wanted to marry they had to complete an

Intention to Marry application. During the 1914-1918 period many

Wellington district Intention to marry applications recorded an Upper Hutt

district address.

Some service personnel who married before they departed for overseas

duty recorded Trentham as their place of residence and their length of

residence was often recorded as only a few weeks or months.

Listed on the Intention to marry applications the brides were recorded as

spinsters or widows. I located three hundred and ten (310) service

personnel (solders) who listed their residence in the Upper Hutt district.

Eleven (11) personnel recorded their intention to marry in Upper Hutt,

one hundred (100) at the Registrar’s Office in Wellington and the

remainder in various other places in New Zealand. Four (4) made

application to marry but never married.

I have listed the details of only some of the service personnel who

completed the Intention to marry application.

Where a cross † is placed next to the name of the service personnel this

indicates that they died while serving.
