Why people are important.Adolph Hitler – He is the dictator of

Germany. Benito Mussolini – He is the dictator of Italy. Joseph Stalin – He is the dictator of the

Soviet Union. Winston Churchill – He is the prime minister

of Great Britain. FDR – He is the president of the United

States. Harry Truman – He is the vice president, but

after FDR died, he became the president of the United States.

Some more reasons why people are important.•Emperor Hirohito – The Emperor of Japan.

•Rosy the Riveter – She is an icon to inspire woman to work like men. She inspired woman all over the United States.

•The Tuskegee airman were a group of African American who flew successful missions over Italy.

Pearl Harbor – December 7,1941

• Pearl Harbor, a navy base in Hawaii, was bombed by Japan. It was a surprise attack, and people on the island thought that is was the U.S. from the

mainland. The Pacific Fleet suffered terrible damage. Thousands of soldiers and the navy

were killed. FDR called war against Japan. This led the United States into the war.

D-day •200,000 soldiers invaded Normandy, France. This landing allowed the Allies

begin to move toward Germany. Italy has lost.

VE-Day •On VE-Day Allied powers made Germany

surrender unconditionally. Before the Allies came in, Hitler committed suicide.

Iwo Jima•During island hopping, the Allies captured Iwo Jima. It was near Japan, so they used it as a aircraft base. It helped the Allies drop

the bomb on Hiroshima.

Rationing•During the war, there were barely any goods. For example: gasoline, meat, and

sugar were rationed. People sent the supplies to the soldiers in Europe.

Internment camps•FDR, the president during WWII, put

Japanese Americans in internment camps during the war. Although they were held prisoner, they were not treated harshly.

Atomic bomb•Because Japan would not surrender, the

U.S. dropped a bomb on Hiroshima. They still did not surrender, so we dropped another bomb on Nagasaki.

VJ-Day•After the atomic bomb in Nagasaki, Japan surrendered unconditionally. This day was called VJ-Day. VJ-Day stands for Victory in

Japan Day.

VE-Day•On this day, the U.S. flew in over

Normandy, France. They surrendered unconditionally. VE-Day stands for Victory

in Europe day.

Holocaust • This was a mass murder. The Nazi’s killed nearly

12 million people. ½ of those people were Jews. Hitler blamed the Jews for Germany’s economical

problems, so he put them in concentration camps.

What you need to know… What caused the war in the first place?

Germany’s dictator, Adolph Hitler, wanted to make Germany a stronger nation and

country. He wanted to gain more country’s, so he did. Other nations, such

as Great Britain, didn’t like this. They made an agreement that said that Germany couldn’t attack any more

nations. On September 1, 1939, Hitler invaded Poland. This led to WW2.

Some more things you need to know…

What did everybody else do at home?Since the Pearl Harbor attack, we had to get

ready to fight, or to mobilize. Since men were fighting in the war, African Americans and Woman had to build war supplies.

Other people watched newsreels. A newsreel is a short film without sound that shows a clip of current events.

Important Words Concentration camp: a place where a large number of

people are held prisoner and are forced to work.Dictator: a ruler who has total control over a country

and it’s people.Axis powers: Japan, Italy, and Germany in WWIIFascism: The belief that government controls the
