Ever in my life have I sought thee withmy songs. It was they who led me fromdoor to door, and with them have I feltabout me, searching and touching myworld. It was my songs that taught meall the lessons I ever learnt;theyshowed me secret paths, they broughtbefore my sight many a star on thehorizons of my heart. They guided meall the day long to the mysteries of thecountry of pleasure and pain, and atlast to what palace gate have theybrought me at the end of my journey?

You came down from your throne andstood at my cottage door.I was singingall alone in a corner, and the melodycaught your ear.

You came down and stood at my cot-tage door.Masters are many in our hall, and songs are sung there at all hours. But the simple carol of this novicestruck at your love. One plaintive littlestrain mingled with the great music ofthe world, and with a flow’r for aprize; You came down and stopped atmy cottage door.
