North America – has thebottom been reached?Tourist numbers to North America have hitthe bottom and will rise in the next fewmonths and into 2010, according to figuresfrom the Travel Industry Association ofAmerica.International arrivals started their steadydecline last September, hitting a high ofjust over 58m before dropping to thecurrent figure of 51m – a fall of 11.3%.In Europe, the sharpest drops came fromthe UK with a 15% drop in visitor numbersand Ireland with a 21% drop. However,

these figures are set to reverse with aforecast of 53m visitors by mid-2010 – apercentage increase of 3%.The UK will lead the return with 3.8mvisitors in 2010 – a 1% increase on thisyear’s tally – and Ireland will stay flat at418,000. However, it will not be until 2011that all countries post positive figures tothe US. And visitor figures are predicted toovertake the 2008 high sometime in 2012when the 60m figure will be reached.Airlines are reporting similar trends interms of US-bound travel. After almost a year of falling load factorsto the US, British Airways finally posted apositive set of figures in August with a3.4% increase to 88%. However, within theUS its sales were down 17% year-on-yearin July, according to Simon Talling-Smith,BA’s executive vice president for theAmericas. Talling-Smith said although the corporate

market in the US was down, he felt that thesituation had plateaued. His views were backed by outgoingContinental CEO Larry Kellner at aconference in July, who said: “We think wehave hit the bottom, but we don’t knowhow long we’ll be there. “The big question is when does businesstraffic come back and at what volume.”At the US’s biggest business travel event, the National Business Travel AssociationConference, in August, suppliers seemedconfident that the market had hit thebottom. However, travel management companiesremained less optimistic as corporatescontinue to hold back on travel spend.Research released at the event predictedthat business travel spend in the US wouldincrease by 2% over the next three years.

2009... History in the makingWorld Travel Awards

As well as addressing the challenges that adeteriorating world economy will bring to thetravel and tourism industry, the key messagein the latest UNWTO World TourismBarometer is that times of crisis often lead tothe biggest opportunities.

The industry is under no illusions that thecourse of 2009 will enforce wide-scalestrategic re-thinks and many tough decisionswill have to be made.

But what is just as certain is that the industryis a highly-resilient sector and will eventuallyreturn to strong growth.

These challenging economic times will onlysucceed in separating those companies whowith fortitude and vision remain unbowed intheir commitment to excellence from thosecompanies complacent or average.

Since 1993, “the Oscars of the travel industry”has stood unrivalled in impartially recognisingand rewarding those who set the standardsacross all sectors of travel and tourism.

This year, all eyes will be on Mexico and theWorld Travel Awards North & Central AmericaCeremony. Tonight’s winners will show what ittruly takes to make a difference and will actas beacons of hope for the rest of the industry.

History will prove that 2009’s World TravelAwards Winners will be those companies thatbest navigate economic fluctuations and willemerge from these challenging times withexponential growth, augmented market shareand galvanised reputations.

There has never been a more important yearfor positive action. Now is the time forindividuals to step forward and demonstratewhat can be done to make a difference.

Through an unswerving commitment toexcellence, through recognising examples ofbest practice and through collective learningand solidarity, these challenging timespresent us with the opportunity to re-enforcethe overall industry infrastructure.

2009 is a year of positive action for everyoneinvolved in the travel and tourism industry. We hope that World Travel Awards can playits part in helping the region to be in the bestpossible shape for the upturn.

We’re working to ensure that sustainable tourism makes a world of difference at favourite destinations. Protecting the natural environment, traditions and culture – the things that make holidays special. And improving lives – so that local people benefit from tourism and are happy to give visitors a warm welcome. All of which can offer customers a richer holiday experience and help ensure there are special places for us all to sell, into the future. Everyone wins! JUST SOME OF THE WAYS WE’RE ALREADY CHANGING LIVES...

KEEPING DESTINATIONS SPECIAL...

Find out much more at www.thetravelfoundation.org.uk – and access a range of communication and training tools to help transform your business.

IN MEXICO, WE’RE CHANGING LIVES WITH JAMChildren like Elsy now have fresh hope for the future. The ladies of Chumpon are creating a whole new business, making jams for visitors to enjoy. There is a long way to go, but these amazing women have already developed new skills and confidence... and are on the road to creating a more secure future for their families. Two communities have fresh hope through beekeeping and jam making initiatives in Mexico, supplying produce for tourists to enjoy.

IN TOBAGO, WE’RE CREATING FRESH LIVELIHOODSAmswell’s family depend on fishing for their living. Over-fishing has led to a drop in income of up to 40%. Amswell is now learning about fish farming at his school, which is teaching a whole new generation about sustainable fishing. The fish farmed is to be sold to hotels and restaurants in the area, providing the school with an additional income for books and other materials. Amswell is developing skills for his future, as well as helping to ensure sustainable fishing on the island. Speyside School is demonstrating that freshwater fish farming can offer fishermen a supplementary or alternative source of income.
