Over the past 12 years, Praia D’El Rey hasestablished itself as the pre-eminentresidential and leisure resort in the OesteRegion and in Portugal. The Algarve’s Mediterranean climate andglorious beaches has long made it Portugal’smost popular tourism region. But the countryalso has a rapidly rising star: the Oeste –boasting miles of glorious untouchedbeaches, incredible golf, and a rich medievalPortuguese culture.

Oeste, the Portuguese for west, stretches forover 200km along the ruggedly beautifulAtlantic coastline between Portugal’s twomain cities, Lisbon and Oporto, and taking inthe must-see medieval town of Óbidos.

Unlike more famous and populated regions inthe south of the country, here you candiscover pretty villages and a real Portugueseway-of-life amongst stunning coastal scenery,including some of the best beaches in Europe.So much of this area has yet to be discovered by the mass tourism market, guaranteeingyou a beach to yourself.

The landscape is indeed rather special,starting off from Castelo de Paiva, all the waydown south to Arruda dos Vinhos, you will beamazed by the picturesque fishing towns(Nazaré, Peniche, Ericeira) and the beautifullagoon of Óbidos that links to the stunningbeach of Foz do Arelho.

The weather is invariably one of perfect blueskies, providing the perfect backdrop foroutdoor activities including water sports,hiking or camping in the lush greensurrounding land. The balmy weather and the

white sandy beaches offer one of the choicesbetween practicing water sports and enjoyingthe calm life of the seaside.

Golf with a sea-view

While the Algarve is famous the world over forits golf, the lesser-known Oeste region israpidly earning a reputation too for its world-class fairways. The gentle rolling hills setagainst the backdrop of huge skies and deepoceans make this a golfer’s paradise.

The recent opening of the new Bom Sucessocourse near Praia D’El Rey is welcoming moreand more golfers from around Europe, asword spreads about the Donald Steel-designed course. The legendary SeveBallesteros has also designed some courses inthe pipeline.

Set along a beautiful sandy beach less thanone hour from Lisbon, in an area of protectedrural landscape of rolling sand dunes and pinetree forests, Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf &Beach Resort epitomises the charm of theOeste region. Almost every town near Praia D’El Rey cantrace its history back to the 12th century butthe most famous is Óbidos, 15 minutes fromthe resort but a whole world away. Itsuntouched town centre is medieval in feel andmany of its buildings date back to the time ofthe Conquests, their whitewashed and ochrewalls and blue-framed windows and doorscrying out to be photographed.

Óbidos has dozens of restaurants, bars andcafes as well as open air opera in the old townsquare, music festivals and medieval feasts, aswell as its own chocolate festival.

In the spotlight: Stuart Swycher, Owner andPresident of the Resort, Praia D'El ReyMarriott Golf & Beach Resort

Stuart Swycher is one of the hospitalityindustry’s sharpest talents with an uncannyability to spot a potential development andmake it happen. As chairman of BelticoGroup, he developed Praia D’El Rey.

What inspired you to build Praia D’El Rey?SS: I first came across Praia D’El Rey in thelate 1980s. Back then there were just a fewhouses near the sea, no golf course and it wasa good 90 minutes from Lisbon. But all Icould see were the miles of sandy beaches,the natural dunes and the long hours ofsunshine. I could imagine that others, like me,would want to spend time in this place.

What originally attracted you to the Oeste region?SS: I had been to the Algarve often duringthe 1980s, but found it overdeveloped andexpensive. In the Oeste region, especiallyaround Obidos, I could see the potential tocreate a really integrated resort that wouldappeal to visitors, and it was obvious in theearly 1990s that the region would benefitmassively from the new motorway that wasbeing built.

Which aspects of the resort are you mostproud of and why?SS: I am particularly proud that Praia D’El Reyhas set the bench mark for professionaltourism development in the Oeste region. Weopened the Praia D’El Rey golf course in 1997and the Marriott hotel in 2003 and we havecreated hundreds of jobs in the localcommunity. I am also especially proud of theprofessionalism and high standards wemaintain throughout the resort.

How would you like the resort to evolve?SS: Praia D’El Rey Golf & Beach Resort isalmost complete – we have a few more golfvillas and beach houses to sell, but the resortis already very mature with a healthy resalesmarket and the golf course and hotel arerunning very successfully.

I am looking forward to beginning work onFalesia D’El Rey, a 230-hectare beachfrontsite very near Praia D’El Rey, where we wantto create another world-class golf course, twoboutique hotels and some spectacular homes.

What is your vision/definition of theultimate resort?SS: For me, it is “barefoot luxury”. I define theultimate resort by its staff and its attention todetail – everything looks effortless on thesurface but they have really thought abouthow guests want to spend their time, howthey want to eat, and how they want to feel.

It has been just over a year since thecollapse of Lehman Brothers and theworld’s slide into recession.The effect on tourism across Europe has

been severe, with business travel reined in,holidaymakers opting to stay at home andlucrative international markets drying up.It is only now that the various industrysectors appeared to have plateaued and insome cases are reporting a return to growth.

AirlinesAs business travellers stayed away from thefront of the plane, premium trafficplummeted at the start of this year, bothintra-Europe and on transatlantic routes.However, by September the sharp dropsappeared to have levelled out.

British Airways’ non-premium trafficappeared to have turned the corner, with a0.7% increase compared to last year.However, premium traffic still continued tofall, by 7.9% compared to September 2008.Load factors also increased, by 2.4 points to 81.3%.The transatlantic routes continued to be

tricky for airlines to turn a profit and after amuch-trumpeted launch in 2008, BA’ssubsidiary OpenSkies was forced to pull itsloss-making Amsterdam-New York service.

By contrast, the airline defied all the nay-sayers and launched its all-business LondonCity to JFK service in late September.BA also launched a number of new leisure

routes from Gatwick and a business routefrom Heathrow to Las Vegas in October.

However, its attempts to form a mergerwith American Airlines and Iberia were onceagain blocked by the EU.There was just one high-profile airline

collapse in Europe this year, SkyEurope, aSlovakia-based low cost carrier, which at itspeak flew to 38 cities in 19 Europeancountries.It originally sought bankruptcy protection

in June, but limped on after finding newfunding, before ceasing operationssuddenly and without warning onSeptember 1.Alitalia meanwhile had yet another reprieve

at the start of the year when Air France-KLMstepped in to buy 25% of the company for€323 million. It then merged with Air Onethe next day and relaunched.

Lufthansa continued its buying spree, withthe purchase of both bmi and AustrianAirlines in September.

HotelsHotels suffered a particularly tough start tothe year, particularly at the top end of the market. The trend was predicted at the start of the

year with a report commissioned byAmadeus and conducted by the EconomistIntelligence Unit which predicted a “new ageof austerity” was dawning with travellerstaking fewer, shorter and cheaper businesstrips.As corporate budgets were frozen or

slashed many five star properties weretaken off corporate travel policies,prompting them to try and get themselvesre-categorised as four star hotels. Manywere also forced to close floors to savemoney as occupancy levels sunk to new lows.The budget brands benefited from this

downgrading, in particular Premier Inn,which announced it was spending £125mon building four new hotels at London’smain airports from Autumn 2011, two atHeathrow, one at Gatwick and one atStansted, creating a total of 1,570

appeared to have weathered the worst ofthe storm and were beginning to see somesigns of pick up in September.A report by Deloitte predicted there will be

a slowdown in the rate of decline with a pickup in the last three months of next year.

Car rentalIn the past 12 months, almost 70% ofEuropean drivers have changed the waythey drive, as well as 60% using their carless often, especially for short distances,according to the Europcar Transportation &Mobility Observatory.The French and Portuguese have changed

their driving habits the most, atapproximately 94% compared with 90% forEuropeans as a whole.

In fact, some 40% of European drivers areconsidering doing away with theirhousehold car – more than double thenumber (18%) who said they wereconsidering that in the Observatory’s 2008 edition.As was the case last year, the primary

reason behind such a radical move remainsthe cost of ownership: 83% of respondentssaid they could be willing to do without a car

for financial reasons (up from 66% in2008), compared with 48% forenvironmental considerations.

So what alternative means oftransportation would Europeans use if theydon’t drive their cars? The survey revealsthat in terms of mobility strategies, 80% ofrespondents would first turn to publictransportation, followed by walking andcycling. For individual motorizedtransportation, car rental was the leadingalternative at 53% - and even 60% inFrance and Spain - followed by carpooling(48%), and two-wheeled motor vehicles (35%).“We launched our Observatory last year to

detect trends and anticipate needs intransportation and mobility across Europe,”noted Jehan de Thé, Europcar GlobalMarketing Director. “It has proven to be atimely decision. As the second editionshows, the economic crisis has promptedEuropeans to take stock of their realmobility requirements and the variousoptions available to meet them. Europeandrivers have already changed theirapproach significantly and are givingserious consideration to still more changes.”

BTN: How is tourism from the UK toPortugal faring?PNTO: Tourism has inevitably been hit bythe economic recession. Like most otherdestinations in the Eurozone, Portugal hasalso suffered from the devaluation of thesterling against the Euro in 2009. Takinginto account that 2008 was Portugal’sstrongest year ever in terms of tourism, it isinevitable that figures for 2009 will bedown.The Portuguese tourism industry is in a

strong position to weather the recession.Portugal has been a key destination for theBritish travel industry for many years now.Excellent links to and from the UK, goodtravel deals and great weather all yearround are crucial factors that will keep Britsvisiting our country despite challengingeconomic conditions.

BTN: What initiatives are in place tostimulate the tourism economy?PNTO: The tourism market is facing toughtimes across the whole of Europe. However,Portugal is committed to overcoming thesechallenges by investing in the promotion ofour country – and maintaining our statusas a popular tourist destination.

Reflecting the importance of attractingforeign visitors to Portugal, 2009 has seena 20 per cent increase in the allocation offunds to the promotion of tourism,representing the biggest public push thecountry has ever undertaken in this area.

BTN: Are there any projections?PNTO:We expect to see some moderategrowth in 2010, as reflected by greenshoots we have been witnessing in theeconomy at large.

BTN: How does hosting the World TravelAwards affect tourism to the country?PNTO: Portugal feels privileged to behosting the most prestigious travel awardsin the industry. The event will take place inÓbidos, a beautiful mediaeval village justnorth of Lisbon, which we hope will giveattendees a real feel for Portugal above andbeyond its main cities and the Algarve.We believe that the gala event will give

Bobby DavroThe impressionist and comedian Bobby Davrohas been one of the UK's undisputed stars of Saturday-night television for more than a decade.

Bobby Davro made his TV debut in 1981, but his major breakthrough came with anappearance in LIVE AT HER MAJESTY’S IN 1983.

This led to his own Saturday night seriesBOBBY DAVRO ON THE BOX, BOBBY’S SKETCHPAD, TV WEEKLY, which immediately toppedthe ratings for six consecutive years.

In 1991 Bobby moved to the BBC and madethree series, PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE,ROCK WITH LAUGHTER and RUN THE RISK.

In 1997 Bobby hosted for Yorkshire Television’sWINNER TAKES ALL for 65 programmes.

Bobby recorded the No 1 Hit by theproclaimers ‘for comic relief with Peter Kay.

George McCraeGeorge McCrae was the founder of TheMiami Sound Machine and indeed mostprobably the first disco dance performer of alltime when he hit the charts in 1974 with theworldwide No. 1 hit single “ROCK YOURBABY”. This record still holds the world recordfor being No. 1 in no less than 82 countriesthroughout the world, selling an impressive 52million copies worldwide, making it one of thehighest grossing single releases in pop history.

This disco hurricane from Florida went on tohave further top ten hits with “I CAN’T LEAVEYOU ALONE” and “IT’S BEEN SO LONG”.

George McCrae is still the king when it comesto the soul side of disco and is probably oneof the best artistes from this era that you canstill book today.

Steve WomackIn January 2007, at the age of fifty, SteveWomack completed 31 years as a professionalentertainer. In that time he has been a singer,musician, songwriter, actor, after dinnerspeaker and comedian. His currentperformances reflect the whole story. Steve isnow firmly established as one of the UK'sfinest entertainers.
