Welcome to the 9th World South Devon Society Conference and Tour hosted by the North American South Devon Association. The 2014 tour will showcase some of the top registered and commercial South Devon operations in America’s heartland. You will visit five of the top twenty-five seedstock operations in the U.S. and visit premier South Devon commercial and seedstock operations in 14 states. Stops will include regional stockyards, feedlots, bull tests, semen & embryo collection facilities and a visit to the US Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska. We will also visit two of the top agricultural universities, Kansas State and Colorado State. The tour will begin at the historic Fort Worth Stockyards in Fort Worth, Texas. Other highlights will include a visit to the Cowboy Hall of Fame; historic Branson, Missouri; a major league baseball game; Theodore Roosevelt National Park; North Dakota Bad-lands; Historic Medora, ND; Little Bighorn Battlefield; Red Lodge, MT; Cody, WY; Yellowstone National Park; Buffalo Bill Museum; Jackson Hole, WY; Bridger Teton National Park and many others. The conference will be held in Loveland, Colorado and will fea-ture industry leading speakers as well as presentation from each individual world association. The conference is sure to be an educational and fun-filled event. We are excited to welcome you to the U.S. and the 9th World Tour and Conference. Tour Part 1 Saturday, September 13, 2014 The tour will open with a Welcome Luncheon Re-ception at the Fort Worth Historic Stockyards. This living museum represents Fort Worth in it’s heyday, featuring daily cattle drives, Wild West shops and plenty of places to eat. You can even make plans to attend the Stockyards Champion-

ship Rodeo in the Cowtown Coliseum. Afternoon on your own in the Stockyards district.

Sunday, September 14, 2014 Leave Fort Worth, TX to travel to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. If time permits a visit will also be made to the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. The first South Devon operation will be show-cased. We will travel to Kingfisher, Oklahoma to visit the Bollenbach Cattle Company, owned by Scott and Barbara Bollenbach. A visit to Express Ranches, the largest seedstock producer in the U.S. has also tentatively been scheduled.

Monday, September 15, 2014 Leave the Oklahoma City area and travel to Branson, Missouri. On the way a stop will be made at the Jopliin Regional Stock-yards located in Joplin, Missouri. The

Joplin Stockyards has been a fixture in the four-state region for more than 70 years, with more than 10 acres under roof and cattle sales offered 50 weeks each year. Over 450,000 head of cattle are marketed through the stockyards annually, making it the largest cow/calf auction in the nation. Arrive early afternoon in Branson. Enjoy an afternoon on your own in Branson, Missouri, located in the Ozark Mountains. The town is well-known for it’s entertainment and shopping. Step out in the evening for dinner and a show.

Tuesday, September 16, 2014 Travel from Branson, Missouri to Russellville, Missouri to visit the Triple Crown South Devons owned by Randy and Sharon Camp-bell. Enjoy lunch and a herd tour. Leave Russell-vile to travel to Manhat-tan, Kansas with stops on the way to visit members of the Central States South Devon Association. Overnight in Manhattan, Kansas home of Kansas State University.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 Tour the Kansas State University and meet with students and professors. Leave Manhattan and travel to Clay Center, Ne-braska home of the US Meat Animal Research Center (MARC). In 2011 MARC began a new round of sire sampling for the Germplasm Evaluation (GPE) project and included the South Devon breed. Over the past 41 years the GPE project has pro-

vided comparisons of 37 breeds of cattle for a number of traits that determine life cycle efficiency and product quality. The data generated by the project have influenced the con-tributions of breeds to US beef cattle production. Meet with scientists and geneticists at the research center to discuss the South Devon project. Overnight Lincoln, NE.

Thursday, September 18, 2014 Travel from Lincoln, Nebraska to Bridgewater, Iowa to visit Nichols Farms. The third largest seedstock operation in the US, Dave Nichols and family will showcase their herd of Angus, Simmental, South Devon and Red Angus. Following the Nichols Farms stop, we will travel to Pella, Iowa to visit with and view the herds of some of the Iowa South Devon Association

members including JVM Cattle Company, Jordan Vander Molen, Hillcrest South Devons, Shawn & Sara Van Wyk and family and Sharon Van Wyk, Mar-Bet Farm, Marty and Betty Vander Molen and Pam and Mike Vander Molen. Over-night Des Moines, Iowa.

Iowa to travel to Minneapo-lis, Minnesota. Travel through southern Minnesota with a stop at Cabelas in Owatonna, Minnesota, one of the largest outdoor specialty and hunting stores in the na-tion. Arrive early afternoon in Minneapolis. Spend the afternoon at the Mall of America adja-cent to the hotel. Enjoy a Major League Baseball game at the Target Field in Minneapolis featuring the Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Indians. End of Tour Part 1. Saturday, September 20, 2014 Leave Minneapolis to travel to Ellsworth, Wisconsin. Today you will see four South Devon herds, including KNN Farms, owned by Kurt & Nettie Nelson; Valley Hill Farm, owned by Todd Leonard; and Maplewood

Farm, owned by Carl & Betty Stine. You will also visit the Ellsworth Coopera-tive and Creamery home of the famous squeaky cheese curds. Ellsworth white cheddar cheese curds taste like no other, because they come from 30,000 cows on 450 family farms in Wisconsin and Minne-sota. Spend the night in the historic St. James Hotel in Red Wing, Minnesota.

Sunday, September 21, 2014 A scenic drive along the National Scenic St. Croix Riverway will lead us to our next stop in Central Minnesota. You will visit three South Devon herds today, including White Farms, Don & Tonja White and Gary & Karen White; Thompson Cattle Company, Jace & Missy Thompson and Vearl & Mi-chelle Thompson and the RP Farms and Popken South Devon, Joel, Bob & Joyce Popken. Monday, September 22, 2014 Enjoy the central Minnesota autumn colors as you travel from Little Falls, Minnesota along the Mississippi River to Kimball, Min-nesota where you will visit the Schiefelbein Farms owned by Frank & Frosty Schiefelbein and family. A unique opportunity to visit one of the top twenty-five seedstock operations in the US. A family operation that started in 1955 and includes nine sons, eight daughters-in-law, thirty-two grandchildren, and eleven great- grandchildren, the operation continues to grow as fast as the family. The farm runs 700 registered Angus cows and has 4,200 acres of pastures and crops. Leaving Kimball you will travel to Pierz, Minnesota to spend the afternoon and evening at the DLCC Ranch, owned by Dar, Lynn, Lane & Leah Giess. Enjoy an afternoon looking at cattle and an evening of fun, food and entertainment. Overnight in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Tuesday, September 23, 2014 It’s time to head West travelling to-wards Morris, Min-nesota where a visit to Wulf Cattle is

scheduled, an operation also in the top twenty five seed-stock opera-tions. We will tour their feedlot and one of five locations in a three-state area. From Morris travel through eastern

South Dakota to the T/K Ranch owned by Terry Kenyon, in Gary, South Dakota. A diverse cattle and sheep operation you will also have the op-portunity to view a set of ranch horses used for cattle and hitch. Overnight in Highmore, South Dakota.

Wednesday, September 24, 2014 An early morning visit to Daybreak Ranch owned by Jim & Carol Faulstich, High-more, South Dakota will start the day. From there we will travel across central South Dakota on our way to Gackle, North Dakota to visit Diamond Plus Cattle, owned by Roger & David Pressler and the Dahl Land & Cattle Company, owned by the Dahl Family, Dan, Jeff, John and Jack Dahl. Last Year’s Seedstock Producer of the Year, the Dahl family will host an afternoon of looking at cattle and an evening dinner. Overnight in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Thursday, September 25, 2014 Travelling further west today to the Theodore Roosevelt Na-tional Park and through the North Dakota Badlands to His-toric Medora, North Dakota. The 36 mile scenic drive loops through the Badlands and a night spent at the Rough Riders Ho-tel originally con-structed in 1884. Re-cently updated, you

can enjoy the luxuries of today in the feel of the Old West. Afternoon on your own to enjoy the shops and restau-rants.

Friday, September 26, 2014 Travelling farther West and entering into east-ern Montana to arrive at the Little Bighorn Bat-tlefield the location of Custer’s Last Stand. Af-ter a visit to the mu-seum and battlefield, the MJB Ranch in Lodge Grass, Montana, owned by Jim & Mary Brown and family will be the next herd visit. The history of the ranch dates back to the 1900’s when Jim Brown’s grandfather came up to Montana from Texas. Long-time seedstock producers, they started raising Hereford cattle, added Salers cattle in the early 1980’s and South Devon cattle in the late 80’s and now run a select group of Angus cattle as well. The fifth generation is now involved with cattle from MJB Ranch. On the way from MJB Ranch to Billings, Montana with a stop at Origen, a semen col-lection facility with the Who’s Who line-up of bulls available to see. Overnight in Billings, Montana.

Saturday, September 27, 2014 Today will include a visit to the Midland Bull Test Station in Columbus, Montana. One of the top performance bull test stations in the Northwest test-ing for over 50 years. From Columbus drive South on the edge of Custer National Forest towards Red Lodge, Montana with a stop at the 4J Ranch, owned by Jack & JoAnn Schutte in Bridger, Montana. You will have an afternoon in historic Red Lodge, Montana, the Gateway to Yellowstone National Park. En-joy the shops and restaurants in this quaint, mountain town. Overnight in Cody, Wyoming.

Sunday, September 28, 2014 A morning visit to the Buf-falo Bill Center of the West museum will start the day followed by a drive through Shoshone Na-tional Forest to Yellow-stone National Park. See the beauty of the park in-cluding waterfalls, moun-tain meadows, geysers, Old Faithful and the wild-life of the park. On the other side of the park a drive through the Caribou Targhee Na-tional Forest on our way to Idaho Falls, Idaho for an overnight stay.

Monday, September 29, 2014 The Elkington family in Idaho falls will host a morning tour of their herd. They run 170 Polled Hereford cows and 45 South Devon cows on the range in eastern Idaho. From there travel through the mountains to the fa-mous Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Shop, dine and relax in the Bridge Teton National Forest and historic Jackson Hole. Enjoy the amenities of the mountain town. Overnight Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Tuesday, September 30, 2014 Leaving behind the mountains and head into central Wyoming on the way to an overnight stay in Cas-per, Wyoming., stop-ping at the National Bighorn Sheep Inter-pretive Center in Riverton, Wyoming. A tentative stop at a commercial cow/calf operation in central Wyoming is sched-uled.

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 From Casper, Wyoming travel to Lusk, Wyoming to visit the Bro-ken Spur Ranch, a commercial cattle operation owned by Tom Marshik. From there a visit to Wyoming South Devon in Manville, Wyoming owned by William McCleerey. The last stop of the day will be at the Malm Ranch. Homesteaded in the 1870’s the Malm Ranch is now operated by the fourth,

fifth and sixth genera-tions of the original Malm family. In the early years, it was known by the name of Pioneer Stock Farm and was known for its Belgian and Percheon horses that provided the horsepower for farmers in the Greeley, CO, area that have since been replaced by trac-tors. During the same period, the Malm name was recog-nized for its high quality Hereford and Shorthorn cross com-mercial cattle. They now run Angus, Red Angus, Salers, Gelbvieh, South Devon and Braunvieh. Thursday, October 2, 2014 Travel from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Wellington, Colorado home of the Leachman Cattle of Colo-rado (LCoC), the 7th largest seedstock producer in the US. Leachman Cattle of Colorado was founded in 2003 by Lee Leachman and Dallas Horton. Each year, LCoC markets over 1,000 bulls and 2,000 fe-males. The bulls are produced through a network of cooperator producers and via embryo trans-plant. LCoC’s cooperator net-work consists of twelve herds comprised of over 5,000 breed-ing females. LCoC provides co-operators with breeding, selection, and marketing services. After visiting the Leachman operation a tour of the Colorado State Universities Animal Science facilities will follow. Meet with stu-dents and professors from one of the top agricultural schools in the nation. Travel to LaSalle, Colorado to visit Five Rivers Feed-lot, a 69,000 head capacity feedlot.

Friday & Saturday, October 3-4, 2014 End the tour in Loveland, Colo-rado at the Embassy Suites where the two-day 9th World South Devon Conference will be held. Enjoy a conference sched-ule including industry-leading speakers, presentations from each association, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zea-land, Canada, South Africa and the U.S., special entertainment and the South Devon auction.
