• Rabies is China’s deadliest infectious disease.

• Last year over 3,000 people died from rabies infection.

Mr Wu’s story

• Wu Qingshan, 22 years old.

• Working as a cook in Beijing

• Bitten by a dog in the street.

• Didn’t go to hospital

• 6 weeks later he was dead.

•Rabies is caused by a virus.

•If an animal with rabies bites you, the virus can get into your body.

•The virus attacks the central nervous system.

•If someone has the virus, without special treatment there is nearly 100% chance of death.

The central nervous system controls everything we do, therefore it is very important!

Due to its importance, anything that can damage the central nervous system can be fatal

As the virus attacks the central nervous system, the body shows different symptoms.

• Headache, fever, sore throat

• Paralysis

• Death

How to avoid and eliminate rabies

•Any ideas?

•Know how to avoid dog bites.

•Vaccinate your pets.

•Don’t let your cat or dog out its own

•Know how to recognize a dog with rabies.

•A dog with rabies may become aggressive and irritable.•Or may become unusually friendly.

• Dogs may not be able to walk properly.

• They may show extra-saliva around the mouth.

• A change in voice is possible

How can not letting your pet out ontheir own help?

•Pets out on their own are more likely to catch rabies from infected animals

•A pet with rabies may not show symptoms immediately, but could still pass on the disease.

• Vaccination against rabies is quick and easy.

• If enough animals are vaccinated, rabies can be eliminated.

Dog culls

• This is not an effective way of controlling rabies in an area.

• It is indiscriminate- may not kill the dogs with rabies.

• In the long term doesn’t decrease the number of dogs in the area, so doesn’t reduce risk of rabies.
