Hands Appoint

New Board Member The Hands of the Cause in the Western Hemisphere

on June 12 announced to the National Spiritual Assem- blies and Auxiliary Board members of North America the appointment of Dr. Peter Khan of Ann Arbor, Michigan as an Auxiliary Board member for propa- gation.

Haifa Letter Brings

Assurance During Crisis When the news spread around the world about the

outbreak in early June of hostilities between Israel and her neighboring Arab countries, the National Spiritual Assembly, on behalf of the Baha'is in the United States, cabled the Baha'i World Center in Haifa assurance of our prayers for the protection of the sacred Shrines and other properties and the safety of all the Baha'is in Israel. No immediate response was received, therefore all Assemblies were asked to request their communities for prayers. A cablegram sent by the Universal House of Justice on June 9 was never received, apparently due to the many problems affecting cable services at the time. However, certain other cablegrams routed through the National Administrative offices were re- ceived and since these indicated that all properties and Baha'is were safe, the National Spiritual Assembly conveyed this information to the Assemblies and State Goals Committees in a general letter on June 12, 1967.

The cablegram sent by the Universal House of Jus- tice but not received was repeated in a letter, as follows:

"APPRECIATE CONCERN LOCAL ASSEMBLIES FRIENDS HAPPY ADVISE SHRINES UNHARMED FRIENDS SAFE.-PLEASE CONVEY LOVING GREET- INGS ENTIRE COMMUNITY."

Thornton Chase Memorial

to be Held in October The fifty-fifth annual observance of the Thornton

Chase Memorial will be held Sunday, October 1, 1967 at 2:00 p.m. in the Inglewood Park Cemetery (Sierra Plot No. 209)' Inglewood, California.

An appropriate program is planned to mark the memorial to this first Baha'i in America and to the visit made at his grave by 'Abdu'l-Bahb in 1912. Of Thornton Chase 'Abdu'l-Baha said: "This revered personage was the first Baha'i in America. He served the Cause faithfully and his services will ever be remembered throughout ages and cycles."

for the Protection of the Faith The following communication from the Universal

House of Justice dated March 19, 1967 and published in BAHA'~ NEWS in May and June is again called to the attention of every Baha'i.

"In the 1965 Ridvan Message from the Universal House of Justice we announced that in September 1967, on the Feast of Ma&iyyat, a few appointed representatives of the Bahb'i world would visit the site of the House of Bahl'u'llah in Adrianople where the Suriy-i-Mul~k was revealed. We have decided that the six Hands of the Cause of God who will represent the Universal House of Justice at the Inter-Continental Conferences in October are the ones to make this visit. Immediately following this historic act they will proceed to their respec- tive Conferences.

"For the protection of the Faith it is essential that no one, except the Hands, travel to Turkey on this occasion."

Temple Public Meetings Committee The Temple Public Meetings Committee is responsi-

ble for setting up a weekly program at 3:45 each Sun- day afternoon in Foundation Hall of the House of Wor- ship, during which the principles and spirit of the Faith are presented in a clear, concise and beautiful manner.

Speakers and chairmen with sincerity, knowledge of the Teachings, ability to speak clearly, and above all, with the power to impart the spiritual potency of the Faith are chosen, usually from the Temple area. When the committee is aware in advance that seasoned teachers will be visiting from other areas, they are delighted to seize the opportunity to present "new faces."

The committee of energetic, dedicated and hard- working members meets twice a month to plan the weekly programs and Special Events Days presenta- tions, as well as other public meetings held in Founda- tion Hall. Plans are under way for greater diversity in the programs which include musical selections by the Baha'i Ensemble.

Attendance varies from approximately 30 to 150 peo- ple, depending on the season of the year, weather conditions, etc. There is a growing tendency for some of the audience to linger and talk at length with the speaker, chairman, or the hosts and hostesses which are provided by the area assemblies and groups.

What a great joy and bounty to be able to present to the visitors who come to see our beautiful Mother Temple, the Message of Baha'u'llih that alone can heal the sicknesses of a troubled humanity.

Second Series of Four Tapes Now Available-- "Nobility of Man"

A second series of four 15-minute tapes on the Baha'i Faith has been prepared by the Public Information Department and are now available from Distribution and Service. These tapes show a relationship between modern views on maturity and the teachings of the Baha'i Faith. If used on radio, local introductory and closing announcements must be added to each pro- gram. Each program provides a good basis for discus- sion in firesides and study classes. Each tape begins with a quotation from the Writings and a brief sum- mary of the Faith.

Tape #1 .' . . deals with knowing ourselves Tape #2 . . . describes those things necessary for

development of the individual Tape #3 . . . discusses the individual in his so-

ciety Tape #4 . . . treats the role of the individual in

his contemporary world The tapes are done in narrative style against a

musical background with two voices alternating (man's and woman's).

While the tapes are designed to be used in a series, each tape may be used singly by deleting the closing statement on each tape which gives the subject of the next tape. A list of suggested opening and closing announcements and suggestions for use are included.

Each tape is on a 5" reel, and the tape speed is 7% ips.

Personal Questionnaires are Flowing

to National Baha'i Center Early in July all Baha'is - both adults and youth -

were mailed a personal questionnaire with a letter from the National Spiritual Assembly requesting their co- operation. The prompt response by many has been greatly appreciated. Baha'is who have cheerfully vol- unteered their services are busily engaged in process- ing these returns so that the information can be added to that already on the electronic computer.

This new information serves a variety of purposes, in addition to the mailing of BAHA'~ NEWS. With the in- clusion of the personal information the record will be- come invaluable to the National Office and to the State Goals Committees in enlisting the talents and experi- ence of every Baha'i as we approach the goal of uni- versal participation.

Any Baha'i who fails to receive a questionnaire should request one immediately from the National Baha'i Center, 112 Linden Avenue, Wilmette, Illinois 60091. Those who have received theirs and have not as yet mailed them in the envelope provided are urged to do so promptly.

Time for Renewal of

World Order Subscriptions Issue Number 5 of World Order magazine marks a

turning point of the journal. As it enters its second year it has lived through its birth pains and has come to a time of growth. It is the time for renewal of all original subscriptions. It is the time when all mailings are being converted to the new data-process- ing system. We trust that any errors of the past can be caught and corrected. It is the time of transfer of production printing and mailing to Wilmette under the supervision of Glenford Mitchell as managing editor, assisted by a new team of artists. With an increas- ing inflow of manuscripts, the editors have gained a wider choice of authors and articles to serve the teach- ing interests of the Faith.

The next issue will focus upon the Centenary, with an editorial by Firuz Kazemzadeh and an essay on the meaning of the Tablets to the Kings by David Earl. There will be articles by Mahmoudi on the institutionalization of religion, by Yntema on the harmony of science and religion, by Garvin on Harlem, by St. Barbe Baker on the redwoods, by Rassekh on the non-hero in history, by Jamir in a fantasy on flying saucers, by a BahP7i reading Eusebius, and poems by Margaret Danner and William Stafford.

Some remarks and instructions for subscribers old and new :

1. All original subscribers should now renew for one or more years.

2. All donors of gift subscriptions in the past should renew these if at all possible. Please supply now all names and addresses of your original recipients, along with the new subscriptions.

3. In the near future a survey will be made of all World Order recipients to determine whether any issues were not received so that replacement copies can be forwarded.

The magazine will come to be a great teaching asset for the BahP'is in reaching those interested in the Faith. It needs your support and your articles.
