Health care is living its greatest crisis in patient safety ever!

Unprecedented pressure on health systems worldwide
Unveiling challenges and risks health workers face daily
Infections, psychological disturbances, violence, illness, and even death
Working in stressful and non-conducive environments makes health
workers more prone to making errors, which can lead to patient harm
Nurses and midwives are at a particularly high risk of work-related stress, burnout and mental health problems
Patient safety:
Underpins the principle of
“first do no harm”
One of the most important components of health care delivery, which is critical to achieving UHC
In low- and middle- income countries, every minute, 5 patients die because of unsafe care
• In high-income countries, one in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care
• Nearly 50% of them considered avoidable
• Health workers are frequently exposed to a range of hazards in their day to day work such as
o Biological (infections)
o Chemical (latex)
o Physical (radiation, falls, fire) risks
o Risk to mental health
o Exposure to violence
One in 3 health workers in high-income countries suffer from work-related burnout at the workplace
Globally, 6 out of 10 of health workers report experiencing a form of violence at the workplace
So far, about 10% of all cases of COVID-19 globally are among health workers

Linkage between health worker safety and patient safety
Stress and burnout in health workers has a significant impact on safety of patients
High levels of burnout are related to external factors:
• high workload
• long hours
• strained interpersonal relationship
Physicians suffering from depressive symptoms were associated with increased risk of medical errors
