WORLD OZONE DAY FIJI Country Summary of WOD Events FIJI The Fiji National Ozone Unit through the Department of Environment organized World Ozone Day (WOD) celebrations in the Western Division of Fiji. The activities involved three (3) days of school visitation from 10 – 12 September 2018. A total of ten (10) schools targeting mainly Year 12 and Year 13 students were visited for the dissemination on synergies between Ozone Depletion and Climate Change [given that Fiji is in the process of ratifying the Kigali Amendment]. This also created a platform for the students to be well versed with health issues, policy and environmental economics. Schools were also provided with awareness materials that included posters, brochures and giveaways. The main day involved a stakeholder workshop on 13 September, 2018 with Chief Executive Officer of Lautoka City Council invited as chief guest for the event. The one (1) day program comprised of presentations from relevant stakeholders and display of exhibition booths. Launching of the four (4) UN Environment Apps also took as part of the commemoration. There were three (3) exhibition booths which displayed training simulators, R32 Air-Conditioning units and also Hydrokleen product which is used for cleaning and servicing air-conditioning units. The presentations mostly focused on three (3) priority areas which were on the Ozone depletion and international response, Technology transfer in RAC applications and Compliance, enforcement and policy measures. Presentations were delivered on existing energy standards programs, enforcement at the borders, challenges confronting the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry, transition to low-GWP and non-ODP refrigerants, and policy measures. This was an interactive workshop as invited participants were from RAC sector/industries, municipal councils, NGOs, Custom Shipping agents, statutory bodies, Government ministries, academic institutes, and enforcement agencies. The participants were also updated on the recent decisions and updates of the Montreal Protocol implementations in Fiji. Approximately eighty-three (83) stakeholders were present for the workshop.
