Industrial X-ray TubesVarian manufactures industrial X-ray tubes for applications in non-destructive testing (NDT), X-ray inspection, baggage screening, and thickness gauging. Varian’s NDT product line consists of a broad range of glass and ceramic X-ray tubes providing a variety of target angles, focal spots, and power capabilities. For inspection applications that require different imaging parameters, Varian offers dual and single-focus X-ray tubes with small focal spots for high-resolution imaging. In addition, Varian offers X-ray tubes with Beryllium (Be) windows for low inherent filtration.

High-Energy Linear AcceleratorsVarian manufactures high-energy linear accelerators (1 MeV – 15 MeV) for applications in non-destructive testing (NDT) and cargo security inspection at ports and borders. Varian’s accelerator product line consists of a broad range of S and X band accelerators providing a variety of dose, energy, and focal spots sizes. For security applications that require material discrimination, Varian offers dual energy interlaced accelerators at 6Mev and 9MeV. In addition, Varian offers complete physics packages (accelerator, detectors, SW) to provide a complete imaging subsystem.

Industrial Flat Panel DetectorsVarian’s PaxScan® line of digital detectors are designed to meet a broad spectrum of imaging applications. With sizes from 13 x 8 cm to 43 x 43 cm, PaxScan detectors prevent geometric distortion and minimize effects of magnetic field and radiation. Varian’s PaxScan detector technology allows customers to take full advantage of superior digital image quality along with high throughput, as well as CT capabilities. These detectors present a uniform, undistorted, high-resolution image throughout the field of view, enabling technicians to take images of the internal structures of objects such as electronic circuits and mechanical parts. Attila® Software Attila is a state-of-the-art software system providing fast and accurate solutions to demanding radiation transport applications. Attila includes an advanced Boltzmann equation solver, an intuitive graphical user interface, and CAD integration. Through Attila’s Monte Carlo interface, users can easily set up and verify calculations with two independent solvers.

Physics Packages and Software

Linear DetectorsVarian is a premier supplier of high-energy X-ray platforms for cargo security systems. By providing components to complete the imaging chain, Varian products can be optimized to produce high resolution, high contrast images. Varian's detectors are a key component in the imaging chain with a modular design making them scalable to the application, and when necessary, field replaceable. Some key features: High Dynamic Range - penetrate large amounts of steel to see dense objects. Excellent Sensitivity - detection system maintains incremental sensitivity to attenuation differences. Scatter Rejection - special design and construction consideration are implemented to minimize scatter effects. Artifact Reduction - synchronized pulse control, reference output corrections, software imaging processing, adaptive signal thresholds, and other techniques to reduce and remove artifacts from images.

Industrial Physics Packages Varian offers packages for digital radiography (DR) and/or computed tomography (CT) applications with source, detector, and image processing software. Software Cone-Beam CT Software Tools (CST) is a portfolio of image processing tools for manufacturers of 2-D and 3-D systems. As a manufacturer of both tubes and flat panels, Varian has a unique insight into both X-ray production and detection. This unique insight allows Varian to offer a complete set of image processing plug-ins to produce the highest fidelity images. Varian engineers and scientists work with customers to develop physics-based scatter corrections that address specific imaging applications. Usability - Windows-based software libraries allow quick software development for high quality images. Quick Results - CST Workbench enables rapid prototyping of 3D imaging applications.

The Attila Software Suite

Attila4MC™ Software Attila4MC improves analysis productivity by providing Monte Carlo users with CAD integration, automated variance reduction, and a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). Through the intuitive Attila4MC GUI, analysts can now import geometry directly from CAD and leverage MCNP’s new unstructured mesh functionality. Attila4MC’s state-of-the-art deterministic solver automatically generates optimized weight windows with a minimal amount of user interaction, bypassing inefficient time-intensive manual variance reduction. Through Attila4MC’s GUI, most MCNP calculations can be set up entirely without editing an input deck, simplifying analysis and verification.

Attila Software Attila includes the full capability of the Attila4MC product, along with a state-of-the-art deterministic solver. Attila’s solver is ideally suited for applications dominated by large attenuations, such as radiation shielding. Attila calculates the solution everywhere, not just at pre-defined tally locations. By providing both visual and quantitative output options, Attila provides analysts with insightful data needed for informed design decisions.
