• The Kaaba in Makkah (Mecca): Contains a massive black meteorite.

• Most important holy place in Islam.

• The Kaaba is a link between heaven and earth, the gateway to heaven.

• Married a rich widow – Khadija (his wife)

• Became troubled by the gap between rich and poor.

• Went to the hills to meditate & received revelations from God (Allah).

• Islam means peace through submission to the will of Allah.

• Quran contains ethical guidelines and laws which believers are to live by.

• Muslims are people who practice the religion of Islam.

• Islam has only one God, Allah, and Muhammad is the prophet.

• His wife, Khadija, urged him to follow the revelations and became the first convert to Islam.

• The wealthy feared he would upset the social and political order.

• Left Makkah (Mecca) due to persecution and went to Madinah: City of the Prophet.

RISE OF ISLAM: MUHAMMAD• Submission to the will of Allah (God) means submission to his prophet.

• Muhammad returns to Makkah (Mecca) with 10,000 men.

• The Kaaba is declared a sacred shrine of Islam.

• Muhammad dies two years later. (10 years after receiving revelations)

• Muhammad never named a successor before his death.

• Abu Bakr is chosen as the leader.

• Muhammad’s father-in-law & chief advisor

• Abu Bakr becomes a Caliph: Religious and political leader.

• United the Muslim world

• Expanded past Arabia

• CONCEPT: Jihad

You’ve heard it on T.V. and from everyone who thinks they know what they’re talking about.

Jihad means struggle. There is actually two forms.

Greater Jihad: The struggle to be a good Muslim. An inner spiritual struggle.

Lesser Jihad: The struggle against oppression by enemies of Islam (not necessarily armed struggle or violence.)

• Arabs conquered Syria from the Byzantine Empire. Conquered Egypt, parts of North Africa, & the Persian Empire.

• Muslim warriors believed they had a place in paradise if they died in battle.
