The Catholic Church was the only universal European institution, as it represented hope through salvation The church preserved Greco-Roman culture within monasteries and through illuminated manuscripts (illiteracy becomes quickly widespread among the masses)

Church missionaries preserve the Latin alphabet through Christian teachings

The church served the social and religious needs of all peoples within their parishes The Catholic ChurchThe only absolute Click me

At the beginning of the Dark Age the church itself was unorganized. Church authority grows slowly with local priests and bishops holding the majority of power

Church authority on a national scale took shape around 800 CE/AD when Pope Leo III anoints Charlemagne emperor of Rome and sets a precedence of church authority over civil authority

The foundations of early medieval society are found in a combination of classical Roman heritage, Christian beliefs and customs of Germanic tribes

The Catholic Church grows upClick HereThis guy (Pope Leo III) changes everything!

There are two important leaders of the Franks in the Dark Age (this is the start of the bridge between the Classical and Modern Eras)

The Franks are led by Clovis (481 to 511 CE/AD) who unites all of the Franks in Gaul and converts them to Christianity Charles Martel then led the Franks in the Battle of Tours (732 CE/AD) and defeats the advancing Muslims (Moors), thus securing Christianity as Europes dominant religion

The Germanic Tribes also grow upClick me

Not Those Franks!

Charlemagne was the King of the Franks from 768 to 800 CE/AD

As king he worked to unite all Germanic people into one kingdom and convert them to Christianity through warfare (forced conversions)

Charlemagne did a lot of dirty work for Pope Leo III while he completed his mission

Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne the Emperor of Rome in 800 CE/AD as a reward for his service to the Pope

Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire(The Franks really grow up)Click Here

The Pope was so powerful that he decided who would be in charge of an entire empire (thats power!)

Charlemagne was the first leader of the Holy Roman Empire (800 to 1806 CE/AD), which covered France, Germany, the northwestern Baltic region, northern Italy, and the Alps

Charlemagne as emperor worked to sooth tensions with the Byzantine Empire, who did accept him as the leader of a united Rome He supported learning through schools and a formalized Christian doctrine (written canons and laws followed by all Christians)

Charlemagne fostered a renaissance of Roman culture in medieval EuropeCharlemagnes LegacyClick Here
