World Half Marathon Championships

IAAF PRESIDENT’S MESSAGERun in the footsteps of champions! The slogan for the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships captures the unique attraction of this event. There are few, if any other, sports in the world in which the public have the possibility of taking part in a World Championship.

On Saturday 26 March 2016, five minutes after the starting gun is fired for the women’s world title race, the elite men will also begin their quest to be crowned world champion. In their footsteps 25,000 club athletes, charity runners, fun & fitness joggers will also set out from Cardiff Castle on the flat and fast course around the city.

The world half marathon’s combination of elite and mass racing represents a popular model of sustainable and affordable sports entertainment which proved highly successful two years ago in Copenhagen. Next year the population of Cardiff, like that of the Danish capital in 2014, will have a direct link to this unique road race hosted in the heart of their city. There are health benefits for the participants of all ages and abilities and the event will also engage with families and the community at large as volunteers, supporters and spectators.

Judging by the record field of almost 16,000 runners which took part in the city’s annual half marathon on 4 October, next year’s IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships will be a spectacular event.

I look forward to visiting the Welsh capital for what will then be only the second IAAF World Championship event of my mandate as IAAF President.

MESSAGE DU PR SIDENT DE L’IAAFCourez dans la foulée des Champions! Le slogan des Championnats du Monde de Semi-Marathon de l’IAAF/ Cardiff University 2016 capture l’essence unique de cette course. Il y a peu, voire aucun autre sport au monde, où le public a la chance de pouvoir participer à un Championnat du Monde.

Le coup d’envoi des Courses d’Élite Hommes et Femmes marquera le début de la course au titre mais aussi le départ de 25000 coureurs amateurs parmi lesquels des affiliés de clubs d’Athlétisme, des coureurs soutenant des associations caritatives, des fans de courses qui s’exercent régulièrement ou à l’occasion juste pour le plaisir. Tous partiront du Château de Cardiff et courront côte à côte autour de la ville sur un parcours plat et rapide.

Il y a deux ans, les Championnats du Monde de Semi-Marathon de l’IAAF/AL-Bank ont rencontré un grand succès à Copenhague grâce à l’association de la Course d’Élite et de la Course de Masse, un modèle d’événement sportif populaire dont l’organisation est à la fois viable, abordable et dans la lignée du développement durable. L’année prochaine les habitants de Cardiff, comme ceux de la capitale danoise en 2014, vivront en direct cette course sur route organisée au cœur de leur ville. L’effort physique des participants, quel que soit leur âge ou leur niveau, aura des bienfaits positifs sur leur santé et les coureurs pourront aussi interagir avec leurs familles, les bénévoles, les supporters ainsi que les spectateurs.

Après un chiffre record d’environ 16000 participants lors du Semi-Marathon annuel de Cardiff du 4 octobre 2015, les Championnats du Monde de Semi-Marathon de l’IAAF/ Cardiff University 2016 promettent d’être spectaculaires.

From everyone at Run 4 Wales let me say a big welcome to the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships, Cardiff 2016, the 22nd edition of this prestigious event.

Cardiff is ready to welcome the world for what promises to be the biggest athletics event ever to be held in our country. We are looking forward to entertaining the greatest distance runners in the world and what a show we are going to put on!

But the race isn’t just for the elite, it is for everyone and we can’t wait to host up to 25,000 amateur runners lucky enough to get in to the event on Easter Saturday 26th March.

Cardiff has hosted so many world-class sporting events this millennium and the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships will be right up there with the very best of them.

We will have tens of thousands of supporters lining the flat, fast and iconic route which takes in all of the city’s landmarks. Welsh people are famous for the warm welcome they give visitors and we are certain everyone visiting Cardiff for the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships will not be disappointed.

Cardiff a accueilli de nombreux événements sportifs de renommée mondiale ces 15 dernières années, et les Championnats du Monde de Semi-Marathon de l’IAAF/ Cardiff University 2016 feront partie des meilleurs.

Des dizaines de milliers de supporters seront présents pour encourager les coureurs tout le long du parcours plat et rapide, passant par les points d’intérêt les plus emblématiques de la ville. WELSH GOVERNMENT WELCOME

It was a huge honour for Wales to win the right to host the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and we now look forward to welcoming some of the world’s top runners for the biggest athletics event to be held in here since the Commonwealth Games in 1958.

Winning the bid is testament to our enviable credentials in hosting successful global sporting events such as an Ashes Test, the Ryder Cup, the Rugby World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and many others. We also look forward to hosting the UEFA Champions League Final in 2017 and the Volvo Ocean race in 2018.

I’m delighted that the Welsh Government has been able to support many of these major events and we’ve also been able to expand many of our home-grown events – the Cardiff Half Marathon being an excellent example. The race has already proved itself to be one of the biggest and best road races in the UK and its success was such an important factor in winning the bid for the World Championships.

2016 is the Year of Adventure in Wales, a year in which we celebrate and seek to build on a wave of exciting new openings, developments and events across the country, and over 10 years of ongoing investment by Welsh Government to make Wales one of the UK’s leading adventure destinations. Joining the elite runners will be 25,000 people – all looking forward to their own personal adventure while they take part in this mass participation race around the capital. I wish the competitors and organisers well and look forward to this epic adventure on Easter Saturday.

MESSAGE DE BIENVENUE DU GOUVERNEMENT GALLOISC’est un grand honneur pour le Pays de Galles d’avoir gagné le droit d’accueillir les Championnats du Monde de Semi-Marathon de l’IAAF/ Cardiff University et nous avons hâte de recevoir certains des plus grands coureurs mondiaux pour ce qui sera le plus grand événement d’Athlétisme que nous ayons eu ici depuis les Jeux du Commonwealth de 1958.

Accueillir cet événement est la preuve du succès que nous avons connu par le passé en tant qu’hôtes d’événements sportifs mondiaux tels que The Ashes, la Coupe du Monde de Rugby, la Supercoupe de l’UEFA pour ne citer que ceux-là. Nous avons aussi hâte d’organiser la finale de la Champions League de l’UEFA en 2017 ainsi que la Volvo Ocean Race en 2018.

Je suis ravi que le Gouvernement gallois ait été capable de soutenir tant d’événements internationaux et que nous ayons pu développer beaucoup d’événements locaux, le Semi-Marathon annuel de Cardiff en étant un excellent exemple. L’événement s’avère déjà être l’une des meilleures et des plus importantes Courses sur Route du Royaume-Uni et son succès nous a permis de remporter l’appel d’offre pour les Championnats du Monde.

2016 a été nommée l’Année de l’Aventure ici au Pays de Galles, une année où l’on célèbre une vague de nouveaux développements, d’opportunités et d’événements à travers le pays. C’est aussi l’occasion de fêter 10 ans d’investissements par le Gouvernement gallois afin de faire du Pays de Galles une des destinations d’aventure phare du Royaume-Uni. 25000 coureurs amateurs rejoindront les coureurs d’élite, avec un seul et même but : prendre part à une aventure personnelle tout en participant à une Course de Masse autour de la Capitale.

COURSE MAPCardiff University World Half Marathon Championships, Cardiff 2016 takes runners past the capital’s most iconic landmarks, beautiful scenery and historic buildings. The predominately flat and fast course makes it ideal for beginners and elites.

The men’s elite and mass race starts at 2pm outside Cardiff Castle from where runners then head down past Cardiff City Stadium on the way to Penarth. They take in the glorious Penarth Marina before crossing the barrage and heading to Cardiff Bay. Runners run right through the heart of the bay taking in the Norwegian Church and Wales Millennium Centre.

The course then heads towards the north of the city with runners completing a loop of the beautiful Roath Park Lake before the grandstand finish on King Edward V11 Avenue amid a number of Cardiff University’s most impressive university buildings.

The course will be policed and marshalled throughout. Race day facilities may be subject to change.

PLAN DU PARCOURS Le parcours des Championnats du Monde de Semi-Marathon de l’IAAF/ Cardiff University 2016 conduit les coureurs à travers les sites les plus emblématiques de la Capitale, comprenant de magnifiques paysages et des monuments historiques. La course, majoritairement plate et rapide, est idéale à la fois pour les coureurs d’élite et pour les amateurs.

La Course d’Élite Hommes ainsi que la Course de Masse débuteront à 14 heures devant le Château de Cardiff, à partir duquel les coureurs poursuivront vers Penarth, en passant par le Cardiff City Stadium. Ils passeront ensuite par la magnifique marina de Penarth avant de passer le barrage et de s’élancer vers la baie de Cardiff. Les coureurs seront ensuite dirigés vers le cœur de la baie en passant par l’église norvégienne et le Wales Millenium Centre.

Le parcours se dirigera ensuite vers le nord de la ville, en faisant faire aux coureurs le tour du magnifique lac de Roath Park avant de passer la ligne d’Arrivée sur l’avenue King Edward VII, au milieu des impressionnants bâtiments de l’Université de Cardiff.

La police et les organisateurs seront présents tout au long de la course et veilleront à son bon déroulement. Veuillez noter que les installations prévues pour la course sont susceptibles d’être modifiées.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONFive premium, city-centre hotels have been selected as WHM Official Hotels (OH) to meet the needs of IAAF guests when they visit Cardiff in 2016. All hotels have been selected for the quality of their accommodation, their service and their experience in dealing with large sporting events.

1. The IAAF FamilyThe IAAF family OH will be the five-star, Hilton situated opposite Cardiff Castle which makes it ideally placed to be close to both the proposed start and finish lines of the race.

2. Media & broadcastersThe Media OH will be the four-star, Novotel situated in Cardiff’s hotel quarter within walking distance of both Cardiff Castle (WHM 2016 start & finish points) and the shopping & entertainment of Cardiff Bay.

3. & 4. Teams: Athletes & OfficialsThe team OH’s will be the four-star Marriott and three-star Clayton Hotel situated opposite each other in the city centre, amidst the restaurant quarter and within a 10 minute walk of Cardiff Castle (the WHM 2016 planned start/finish points and secure warm-up facilities).

5. Technical SuppliersWe have designated the four-star The Angel Hotel in Cardiff’s central hotel quarter as the WHM Technical Suppliers hotel. We have reserved 80 double rooms for the official period to accommodate all technical suppliers and for our own local use.

CELEBRATION ZONESTo celebrate the arrival of the IAAF/Cardiff University World Half Marathon Championships, the city will be opening up to incorporate 7 celebration zones across the city and throughout the course.

Each celebration zone will allow the general public to get closer to the action, find inspiration, take part in activities and support and cheer on the runners.

The city will be extending a warm Welsh welcome with flags, clappers, cheer sticks and promotional material being delivered to and distributed from the many bars and restaurants that will be offering discounts and deals for the runners taking part.

A sports celebration zone will be hosted within the city centre where children and adults alike can discover and enjoy street athletics among many other sports and activities. There’ll be a sprint track and games and activities running for two full days.

On top of this, there will be a big screen located within the city centre which will provide live coverage of the race for everyone to enjoy whether they are shopping or supporting during the day.

At halfway, in Cardiff Bay, another celebration zone will be in operation all day with food and drink activities, a big screen, seating, live music and more taking place throughout the day to increase the event atmosphere and involvement in the event from all local business and citizens out and about on Easter Saturday.

Further music and entertainment will be provided in the city centre and at the finish line where participants can meet their friends and family and celebrate in style the completion of the race.

A map will be on offer throughout the weekend for participants and spectators to find out where best to watch the race and enjoy all the activities and celebration zones on offer.

Cardiff will also be embracing the event with branding across the city in key locations and landmarks to alert everyone to the event and increase participation and engagement across the city to ensure a real festival atmosphere. Branding items will be provided to bars, restaurants and businesses to ensure maximum engagement and exposure for the event.

ESPACES D’ANIMATION La Capitale va accueillir 7 espaces de d’animation à travers la ville et tout au long du parcours afin de célébrer l’arrivée des Championnats du Monde de Semi-Marathon de l’IAAF/ Cardiff University 2016.

Chacun de ces espaces permettra au public d’être au cœur de l’action, de trouver de l’inspiration et de participer aux activités proposées tout en soutenant et en encourageant les coureurs.

La ville accueillera à bras ouverts les coureurs avec des drapeaux, des cris d’encouragements avec en main des objets publicitaires pour applaudir. Ces derniers seront distribués dans les bars et restaurants partenaires qui offriront aussi des réductions aux coureurs participants.

L’espace d’animations sportives sera situé dans le centre-ville où petits et grands pourront découvrir et profiter des activités d’Athlétisme dans les rues. Une piste de sprint sera installée pour l’occasion et des jeux ainsi que d’autres activités seront à la disposition du public pendant deux jours entiers.

En plus de tout cela, un écran géant sera installé dans le centre-ville pour retransmettre la course en direct afin que personne ne perde une minute de l’événement.

Au milieu du parcours, dans la baie de Cardiff, un autre espace d’animation sera installé avec des stands de nourriture et de boissons, un écran géant, des places assises, de la musique live et d’autres activités qui permettront tout au long de la journée d’encourager le public et les entreprises locales à participer à l’événement en ce samedi de Pâques.

D’autres divertissements et activités musicales seront offerts dans le centre-ville à la ligne d’Arrivée, où les participants pourront retrouver leurs familles et leurs amis et fêter la fin de la course.

Un plan sera à disposition des coureurs et des spectateurs avec des conseils sur les meilleurs endroits pour regarder la course et pour profiter de l’événement et des espaces d’animation.

Des produits promotionnels seront également distribués dans des endroits clés à travers la ville afin d’assurer la participation du public et de créer une atmosphère festive.
