  • INTRODUCTION

METALLICA the band that, along with three others, invented thrash metal set out with just one goal to the be the biggest band ever!

This pictorial description will take you on a journey through the highs and lows of the bands turbulent but sensational history. From 1981 when front-man James Hetfield and

drummer Lars Ulrich first formed the group, to the death of bassist Cliff Burton and their entry into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, they are metal icons etched into music history

and a prime example of when a rock genre is done perfectly. Offering mind-blowing chords, hell-raising riffs and the unstoppable energy that this

genre is known for, no-one does it quite like Metallica, and hopefully these pictures and videos whether youre new to their music or a thrash-metal veteran, will excite and

enthral you as their music has to millions around the world because to Metallica fans, nothing else matters

This is our picture description of those events from start to finish of METALLICA!

AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, THE FOURTH ALBUM FROM METALLICA AND ONE THEIR MOST TECHNICAL, WAS THE FIRST TO FEATURE BASS-IST NEWSTED. IT WAS AFTER THIS THAT THEY MADE THEIR FIFTH AND

BEST ALBUM OF THEIR CAREER. SIMPLY CALLED METALLICA, IT WOULD LATER TAKE THE NICKNAME THE BLACK ALBUM.

  • DID YOU KNOW?The first music video Metal-lica ever did was on there fourth album AND JUSTICE FOR ALL with their hard-hitting song, ONE. It was based around a man of war who had had his arms and legs blown off and no speech or sight a serious black n white mini movie!

  • JAMES HETFIELD

  • LOAD/RELOAD ERAThe Black Album was completed, the nearly three-year Wherever I May Roam Tour was over and Metallica had had a face-lift (or rather hair cut); this was when band

entered their U2-style rock-star phase of their long ca-reer. They brought out two albums Load and Reload in this time. It was a brave but dangerous move, yet

this was Metallica doing what they do best what they wanted.

  • It took two years to find someone to replace Newsted. Fortunately Rob Trujillo fit the bill perfectly. His audition and hiring feature in the documen-tary film Some Kind Of Monster, which is incidentally about Metallica and a

    must-see for all fans.

After the unexpected departure of Newsted, Metallica were left without a bass player. They spent two years looking for a replacement while also go-ing through problems of identity and deliberating whether the band was

worth carrying on with.James went to rehab to sort out his drink and anger problems so there were just two members left wondering whether it was worth the fight. After almost a year away from the studio, James returned and new man a sober man and they began work on their next album, with Bob Rock, their producer, filling in on bass until they found somebody permanent. They held many auditions and the one who stood out the most was Rob

Trujillo. Given a million dollars to join Metallica, the job was his.

  • Justice/black album era

They would do there 4th (and most technical) album. then they would make there 5th and best album of there carrier, simply called metallica but would later take

the nick name the black album.

THE FIGHT WITH NAPSTERMetallicas fight against internet-down-loading service Napster would be a bold move for them that would spilt the fans

    views in two.

  • Something new was developing on the internet, a site that would cause problems for not only Metallica but the music industry as a whole.

Napster, a peer-to-peer file-sharing internet site, offered a service that meant its members could download music for free, which in turn led to

many artists being out of pocket.Ulrich, however, was one artist who wasnt going to stand there (the rest of the band included) and

let his hard work be given away for nothing

  • He decided to sue Napster and the people who had taken his music for free.

This act would lose the band alot of fans but were they wrong in taking this action?

On the one hand, they had enough money to live for the rest of their lives in comfort, leading to

many seeing them as money-grabbers, but, on the other, if youve worked really hard all of your life, shouldnt you reep the benefits? Plus if you are a hardcore Metallica fan, you should be happy to

    pay for there records, right?
