As the returning champions, Italy also shocked the world when their poor performance in 2010 took them from number 1 in the world to number 26. They didn’t even make it out of the first round. They lost to Slovakia, a team that hasn’t qualified for the World Cup in 16 years. They were also unable to vanquish Paraguay or even New Zealand, a team who has never made it past the first round in the two World Cups it has qualified for. Italy fell from the top, but they were far from the biggest scandal of the 2010 World Cup.
