THE NENE VALLEY RAILWAYWANSFORD STATION

Every railway enthusiast will enjoy the sights and sounds as we take a look at arrivals and departures of both freight and passenger trains at the wonderful Wansford Station - home to the Nene Valley Railway. Filmed in 2001 and 2004 at the diesel gala days, we take a nostalgic view at what it must have been like to be hauled by big and powerful diesel trains of the sixties and seventies. We shall see such locomotives as the Class 40 with its distinctive whistle exhaust tone, known to enthusiasts as “whistlers”, and a Class 55 Deltic known as the “race horses” of the East Coast Mainline. Highlight of the 2004 diesel gala weekend was Class 56057 running for the first time in preservation in EWS livery, other locomotives include a visiting Class 66 from GB Rail freight in the Medite livery and, of course, resident locos and DMUs. Other interesting features of the station were also filmed including a visit to the loco shed - this and much more can be seen at this wonderful preserved railway.

NUNEATON AND THETRENT VALLEY LINE

Filmed between 2001 and 2004 we visit the well known main line station of Nuneaton, and see the many changes in the infrastructure of the station and track work such as new platforms and the reinstatement of the flyover at Nuneaton. Main line passenger motive power was also to see a major change in the form of the Virgin Class 390 Pendolinos but as you will see the Class 87s were still in charge of main line passenger duties. The freight scene is intense and we can see trains serving the coal and steel industries, deep sea container traffic from companies such as EWS, GB rail freight, Freightliner and trains serving the automotive industries. Of special interest is footage of the Royal Train captured during Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee tour and a charter train hauled by a Class 67. We were also fortunate to film a Class 175 Coradia.

ON WESTERN LINESOXFORD TO DIDCOT

We begin this tour in the historic city of Oxford, a great place to watch the passage of trains. The station is well served by passenger trains including the popular DMUs and loco-hauled Virgin trains in the form of Class 47s. The location sports a loop which provides excellent viewing for the study of both locomotives and rolling stock. This section will also provide you with a few surprises! Moving north to Barnetby, this location must rank as a top hot spot for the pure freight enthusiast. We visited three locations in this area for non-stop rail action. We filmed the Class 56 hard at work together with Class 60s and 66s in wonderful afternoon sunshine. Filmed on separate days, Linslade on the four track section of the West Coast Mainline sees a considerable amount of both freight and passenger trains including the celebrated Class 86s and 87s plus Virgin’s newly introduced Class 390 Pendolinos. FENLAND TRAINSTHE RAILWAYS OF EAST ANGLIA

We begin this DVD with an extensive look at the railways in the counties of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire; in particular, the city of Ely and its surrounding railway routes. Filmed between 2000 and 2004 we concentrate mainly on the freight scene in these areas. The freight in both counties are mainly aggregate, intermodel, and deep sea container workings. Locomotive classes hauling these trains consist of 37, 47, 56, 57, 58, 60 and, of course, the ubiquitous class 66. In addition to these freight workings we see the newly introduced “ONE” (formerly Anglia Railways) Train Operating Company seen in the summer of 2004. With the lowering of the Ipswich tunnel, diesel hauled passenger trains en route to London Liverpool Street were diverted through Ely. Both Anglia and ONE liveries can be seen with scenes of Ely’s magnificent cathedral. Moving a little east, we filmed at various locations between Ely and Bury St Edmunds, and finally we trek north across the flat lands of the Fens with its many unobstructed locations. Many freightliners can be seen bringing lots of colour to a somewhat barren landscape. Special trains such as steam and diesel in the form of Class 55 Deltics and Class 47s can also be seen in and around the Ely area, with no fewer than 30 locations visited. With detailed location maps it all adds up to a fascinating and intensive programme. Some narration is added together with train details and head codes. Also in this DVD is a short pictorial of what else Ely has to offer other than great train locations.

EUROSTAR – LONDON TO PARISThroughout the whole history of transport, especially in modern times, the train has had the greatest and most fascinating effect on all of us. Apart from uniting our families and creating crucial veins in the linking of our society, the train has allowed us to discover the heart and soul of our country - and now because of the immense achievement of building the Channel Tunnel, many other countries too. This DVD covers not only the building of the new Channel Tunnel, but also the history of the many previous attempts to link the United Kingdom with Europe. We also look at the new Eurostar high-speed train itself and the whole concept of international travel. The programme concept was conceived and based on a very ambitious plan to place a camera on the nose of a Eurostar train to show the driver’s view all the way between Waterloo International station in London and Gare Du Nord station in Paris through the Channel Tunnel. In real time the journey takes only three hours but this unique part of the programme has been specially created at high-speed, reducing the journey to a remarkable 10 minutes! It is a commemorative record of one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century.

WALESTHE RESTORED RAILWAYS

OF BRITAINWales is the birthplace of railway restoration. The small narrow gauge lines that once carried slate from the mines to the coast led the way in the railway preservation movement. Today, the many standard gauge lines, make up a comprehensive cross section of railway preservation, which caters for railway enthusiasts and tourists alike. From the standard gauge steam train at Llangollen to the wonderful miniature railways of the Conway Valley Railway Museum, the marvellous railways of Wales come in all shapes and sizes. In the seaside resort of Llandudno, Victorian trams, with their all-wooden bodies, climb the Great Orme. Having given you a brief introduction to the contents of this programme it’s now time for the journey to begin, so “all aboard” for a visit to the preserved railways of Wales.

WALES RE-VISITEDTHE RESTORED RAILWAYS OF BRITAIN

More of the richness and diversity of Welsh steam is celebrated in this, the second of two programmes on the preserved railways of Wales. The Snowdon Mountain Railway, the only rack & pinion railway in the British Isles, climbs the 4 ? mile track to the summit of Snowdonia at over 3500 feet. At Fairbourne the 12 ? inch gauge locomotives and stock carry passengers out across the rolling sand dunes to the picturesque Barmouth Estuary. The endless variety of Welsh steam is confirmed by the Corris Railway, in the early stages of restoration and Talyllyn, the very birthplace of the railway preservation movement, and we finish with the 23 mile round trip from the seaside resort of Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge on the vale of Rheidol Railway.

FFESTINIOG RAILWAY1 YEARS OF STEAM

The Ffestiniog Railway in North Wales was originally constructed to convey slate from the quarries in Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog. The line was built on a steep incline to facilitate the use of gravity trains. In 1863, the increase in traffic forced the owner to consider different forms of motive power. After many trials and much development work, a special design of locomotive incorporating power bogies took to the narrow gauge rails. During the Spring of 1988, the railway celebrated 125 years of steam power with a gala weekend spanning 3 glorious days which saw the return to service of the newly restored Fairlie double engine Merddin Emrys, vintage trains hauled by Prince, visiting W.H.R. Locomotive Russell, and much more besides. Our cameras were there to record the event in full, and this film, produced in conjunction with, and the full cooperation of the Ffestiniog Railway Society includes exclusive footage shot on the double headed run up the line with Blanche and Mountaineer.

The sheer variety of rail traffic is unrivalled, freight trains with two or three locomotives to Trans European trains, all twisting and spiralling their way over this high pass. From Luzern the railway climbs 2,350 feet in 55 miles to Goschenen where the trains enter the 9.5 mile long Gotthard Tunnel. Emerging from the southern portal of the tunnel, the trains continue their relentless journey to the south through the Ticino region with stops at Bellinzona and Lugano before reaching the Italian border. For one hour we study this fascinating railway which challenged the minds of its builders and explore the mighty Alpine Barrier. Narrated by Paul Brown.

Descending the fertile valley and cutting through a gorge with unusual geological formations, it comes to Reichenau, the junction for the line to St.Moritz, before speeding along the double track into Chur, the capital of Canton Graubünden. Here, it connects with the Federal Railways with which it runs almost parallel to Landquart where the Rhätische Bahn`s most important workshops are situated. The line then swings up the valley of the Landquart river to the well known resort of Klosters before beginning a punishing climb towards Davos from where the line continues down the valley of the Landwasser, crossing an impressive viaduct on the way, to the junction with the St. Moritz line at Filisur.

The North of England, birthplace of the industrial revolution, is home to an enormous variety of steam interest. In Middleton, near the centre of Leeds, one of the world’s oldest railways has been resurrected, while the Bowes Railway still works its early rope hauled inclines. In the Lake District, narrow gauge steam conveys tourists through the beautiful scenery of Ravenglass and Eskdale, but equally delightful are the standard gauge railways over the North Yorkshire Moors, and in the high valley of South Tyneside. Active preservation societies operate traditional Pennine branch lines at the Keighley and Worth Valley, and in East Lancashire. Steam centres at Carnforth and Southport maintain locomotives which have access to BR’s main lines, but the whole is finely complemented by collections from the National Railway Museum at York and the Beverly Museum of Army Transport.
