Rafael Urrejola of Undurraga

UNDURRAGA

TOBY’S INSIDE TRACK‘Undurraga make some of Chile’s best wine because they have the greatest young Chilean winemaker and viticulturist of his generation, namely Rafael Urrejola, at the helm. Rafael has overseen a remarkable programme of planting new vineyards in Leyda and Cauquenes, which are now bearing fruit, as well as discovering others. The trio of wines from their own Cauquenes Estate in Maule are wonderful examples of Rhône varieties, still quite rare in Chile.’

Toby Morrhall, Society buyer

Dynamic, exciting and great value: Chile is currently making some world-beating wines in the £7.50-£15 price range. For this well-priced selection, we’ve brought together our favourite wines from four of Chile’s most thrilling producers: Undurraga, whose head winemaker, Rafael Urrejola is ‘the

greatest young winemaker of his generation’; Tabalí who we go to for some of the country’s most delicious sauvignons; Concha y Toro, masters at creating impressive wines across the price spectrum; and Matetic who make stunning wines from organically grown grapes.

MATETIC

TOBY’S INSIDE TRACK‘Situated in a cool valley near the coast, Matetic make impressive wines from low yields. Their aromatic white wines are some of the country’s best and you can really taste the natural, unforced concentration in these wines, born of small crops. We buy these wines because we consider them excellent value for money; it’s an added bonus that they are made from fruit grown in organically cultivated vineyards.’

Matetic Corralillo Sauvignon Blanc 2016A vibrant organic white with the refreshing crispness to partner soft, crumbly white cheeses. Made only 19km from the Pacific in the Rosario Valley, so benefitting from cool breezes, the low yields of the 2016 vintage have resulted in delicious concentrated citrus and green-apple flavours. 13.5%ref AM-CE9351 £8.25 bottle £99 dozen

Matetic Corralillo San Antonio Riesling 2016A ripe and peachy Chilean riesling with round, well-balanced flavours and a mouthwateringly fresh finish. 14%ref AM-CE9401 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

Matetic Corralillo Gewürztraminer 2016The enchanting rose perfume so typical of this fragrant grape is complemented by a full yet fresh palate. Match the aromatics here with a subtly spiced Thai curry or fennel-infused cream sauce stirred through pasta. 13%ref AM-CE9391 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

Concha y Toro Corte Ignacio Rapel Coastal Sauvignon Blanc 2016A vibrant white made from fruit grown at Litueche, close to the Rapel coast. The relatively warm climate here gives the wine its ripe gooseberry-fruit flavours, which are backed up on the palate with crisp, refreshing acidity. 13%ref AM-CE9611 £7.95 bottle £95 dozen

Concha y Toro Corte Marcelo Limari Chardonnay 2015A pleasingly firm, taut chardonnay which retains its refreshing mineral flavours thanks to judicious barrel fermenting before being aged on its lees. Make the most of October’s glut of pumpkins by rustling up a creamy coconut pumpkin curry – a tasty match for this fresh white.14%ref AM-CE9531 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

Concha y Toro Corte Ignacio Casablanca Merlot 2014With juicy plum-fruit flavours and soft round tannins, this merlot from cool Casablanca vineyards elevates rich, warming tomato-based dishes to something special. 14%. The 2015 follows.ref AM-CE9081 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

Concha y Toro Corte Marcelo Limari Pinot Noir 2016 More mineral than fruity, this bright, fine-flavoured pinot displays serious structure and, like many pinots, chimes with the earthy flavours of autumn game and mushroom dishes. 14%ref AM-CE9561 £8.50 bottle £102 dozen

CONCHA Y TORO

TOBY’S INSIDE TRACK‘Concha y Toro are akin to Australia’s thoughtful colossus Penfolds, in that they are able to produce some of the country’s top wines as well as large quantities of great affordable bottles. They own some of the best vineyards in Chile and employ outstanding winemakers – including Marcelo Papa, Ignacio Recabarren and his assistant, Lorena Mora, a rising star – who, thanks to The Wine Society’s special relationship with Concha, are on hand to make wines to our exacting specifications.’

The Society’s Chilean Chardonnay, Limarí 2016Bright and vibrant Limarí chardonnay with an understated mineral character which stands up to food better than the ‘fruit bomb’ style. 10% was barrel fermented to contribute a little roundness and a hint of oak. Try with a nutmeg-spiked cauliflower cheese. 13.5%ref AM-CE9621 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen

The Society’s Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, Maipo 2015Displaying both power and elegance, this cabernet from Maipo has supple food-friendly tannins and a lovely cedary character from ageing in barrel. 14.5%ref AM-CE9511 £6.95 bottle £83 dozen

Tabalí Vetas Blancas Limarí Syrah 2013Superb Chilean syrah with a tarry nose reminiscent of the northern Rhône and a generous palate that evokes the southern Rhône. Aged for approximately 15 months in barrels, 30% of which were new. Now to 2021.14%ref AM-CE9451 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

TABALI TOBY’S INSIDE TRACK‘Situated in the cool Limarí Valley, Tabalí produce some of the country’s greatest sauvignon blancs and syrahs, so it’s no surprise that we asked them to make The Society’s Chilean Sauvignon Blanc especially for us. They are also producing wines from other areas of Chile and the superb Micas carmenère from an old vineyard planted in 1957 is exceptionally good.’ The Society’s Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, Limarí 2016One of Chile’s best sauvignon blancs, this is intensely aromatic with beautiful blackcurrant-leaf aromas and a crisp, refreshing finish. Simply lovely. 13.5%ref AM-CE9041 £7.75 bottle £93 dozen
