After the first Swedish baton twirling competition
had been held in Östersund in 1994, the sport be-
gan to grow rapidly and is now firmly established.
Technical and artistic skills have gradually improved
as the numbers of participants have increased. Inter-
national cooperation has also helped to promote the
position of baton twirling in Sweden. The first time
a Swedish team competed abroad was in 2006 at the
Cup of Clubs Grand Prix in Belgium. 2007 the Swe-
dish Baton Twirling Federation was formed in Linkö-
ping. By then, baton twirling had developed so stron-
gly that a dedicated organization was needed and, by
forming an official federation, it would be possible to
improve the sport. The status of the federation was
also raised as it was obliged to meet the requirements
of CETB and WBTF in order to compete internatio-
nally. The Swedish Baton Twirling Federation is a full
member of WBTF. After three years of cooperating
with the Swedish Dance Sport Federation we have
now changed track and are since 2015 an associated
member to the Swedish Gymnastics Federation.
