WORKSOP MUSIC CONCERT SERIES 2017/2018

WORKSOP COLLEGE

Welcome to the 2017/18 Worksop Music Concert Series.

Run by the College for music-lovers across the region, Worksop Music is a non-profit venture which aims to provide significant cultural enrichment at an accessible cost.

Attracting artists from across the UK and beyond, this series also features home-grown talent from across the school’s pupils and staff. This year’s programme continues the strong spirit of education embued with quality and diversity: from the cinematic thrill of Phantom of the Opera (complete with champagne reception!) to the exoticism of Tango Carismàtico and the Bohemian energy of Red Priest.

We look forward to welcoming you to the concerts.

Timothy Uglow, Director of Music, Worksop College

ORGAN RECITAL: Nathan Barrow

Wednesday 27th September 2017 7.30 pm, Worksop College Chapel

Recent Worksopian Nathan Barrow (2011-2016) returns to home territory before going on to take up his organ scholarship at Pembroke College, Oxford.

Being fertile ground for any young organist, the repertoire will feature a healthy amount of Bach including the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, as well as Boellmann’s Suite Gothique and the Grand Dialogue by Marchand.

The programme will be sure to utilise the impressive tonal scope of the College’s 3 manual organ, undoubtedly one of the finest instruments in the area.

Tickets £8 (£7 concessions, £4 children)

Wednesday 4th October 2017 7.30 pm, Worksop College Chapel

Piers Adams (recorders), Adam Summerhayes (violin), Angela East (cello), David Wright (harpsichord). Gypsy fever from campsite to court: Music by Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel, Biber, Byrd, Mielczewski and Hungarian folk melodies.

The world-famous baroque quartet led by ‘superhuman’ recorder player Piers Adams and the devilish fiddler, Adam Summerhayes, transform into a wild ‘baroque gypsy’ band. They re-live the extraordinary virtuosity of early Bohemian Baroque masters, explore melodies from a 1730 Slovakian fiddler’s tune-book, revel in the gypsy-influenced music of Telemann, and re-imagine music by Handel and the original Red Priest, Antonio Vivaldi – all in their own inimitable, high-octane style. Positively volcanic!

Tickets £13 (£12 concessions, £6.50 children)

French revolution? Tick. American gangsters? Tick. So now the College’s Musical Theatre Production Team are able to turn their attention to Lerner and Loewe’s iconic My Fair Lady. In what would be the librettist’s centenary year, join Henry Higgins as he attempts to pass cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle off as a ‘respectable lady’ in an adaptation of the Pygmalion play by George Bernard Shaw and the film by Gabriel Pascal of the same name, by arrangement with Music Theatre International (Europe).

If you’ve ever wondered why a woman can’t be more like a man or all you want is a seat in the theatre, don’t stay in the street where you live, move your bloomin’ self (!) to come on (d)over and book tickets via the Worksop College Enquiry Office.

Wednesday 14th March 2018 7.30 pm, Worksop College Chapel

A unique cinema experience with a twist - we are showing one of the greatest silent films ever made, the classic 1925 film version of Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney, together with live, improvised organ accompaniment from international recitalist David Briggs. Formerly organ scholar of King's College, Cambridge & Organist of Gloucester Cathedral, David Briggs holds a reputation as one of the most fluent and expert improvisers in the world. This is cinema as it used to be with a musician to capture the mood as the silent movie’s images flash across the silver screen - an exhilarating evening’s entertainment. The evening will begin with a champagne reception in the atmospheric College Library, during which you will be able to meet and talk with the artist.

In association with the Royal College of Organists Tickets £20 (£19 concessions, £10 children)

Carismático is a new ensemble created by accordionist Karen Street. In 2016 Argentinian Composer and pianist, Saúl Cosentino made contact and generously sent her some of his music to play. She was so excited by the compositions that she decided to create her ideal Tango band to perform his music, explore the beguiling world of Tango and write for the band herself. The musical focus for Carismático is Tango Nuevo, a style created by Astor Piazzolla with the aim of moving Tango onto the concert platform. Saúl Cosentino himself was hugely influenced by Piazzolla, eventually studying with him and becoming friends. The core of the repertoire Carismático presents are Cosentino’s brilliant, emotionally charged compositions along side some classic Piazzolla arrangements and Street’s own wonderful new compositions for the group.
