PRECISION MEDICINE RESIDENT PRECISION MEDICINE GRANT APPLICATION GUIDELINES The Cumming School of Medicine has identified Precision Medicine as a strategic priority area of focus. Precision Medicine represents an emerging approach to healthcare, which classifies individuals into sub populations and identifies effective treatments and preventions, based on genetics, environmental and lifestyle factors. To support this direction and facilitate engagement of residents in this initiative which offers many new educational opportunities, the PGME office is pleased to announce a new grant competition: Resident Precision Medicine Primer for PGME The purpose of this PGME grant competition is to encourage approaches to education concerning Precision Medicine as it relates primarily to the PGME environment. Consideration will also be given to educational models that may be extended for use along the continuum of medical education and in patient care environments. Priority will be given to proposals that show promise in contributing to educational curricula related to Precision Medicine. The proposal must focus on proposed educational content, tools and/or activities related to Precision Medicine, not on research in Precision Medicine. Of special interest will be proposals that focus on the following themes: 1. Introducing the Precision Medicine lexicon to medical education 2. Applicability of Precision Medicine for residents providing front line medical care 3. How do I talk to my patients about Precision Medicine? 4. RESIDENT PRECISION MEDICINE GRANT APPLICATION GUIDELINES

The Cumming School of Medicine has identified Precision Medicine as a strategic priority area of focus. Precision Medicine represents an emerging approach to healthcare, which classifies individuals into sub populations and identifies effective treatments and preventions, based on genetics, environmental and lifestyle factors.

To support this direction and facilitate engagement of residents in this initiative which offers many new educational opportunities, the PGME office is pleased to announce a new grant competition:

Resident Precision Medicine Primer for PGME

The purpose of this PGME grant competition is to encourage approaches to education concerning Precision Medicine as it relates primarily to the PGME environment. PGME will offer up to four grants with a maximum available funding of $5000 per award. Funding will be available for project development during the 2019-20 Academic Year commencing July 1, 2019. Funds will be disbursed based on the approved budget in the successful grant application and on submission of appropriate expense claims and supporting documentation.

Completed applications should be submitted to Julie McEwen in the PGME office (G30 Heritage Medical Research Building) or electronically to [email protected]

All grant applications received by the deadline will be reviewed for eligibility and merit. Progress reports must be submitted to the PGME Office at six and nine months with presentation of the final product at or close to the grant end date (negotiated with the relevant program and PGME Office).

Terms and Conditions:

1. Applicant(s) must be full-time Ministry Funded residents in good standing at the University of

Calgary (Sponsored trainees and Fellows are not eligible).

2. Individual or group (maximum of 4) applications are welcome.

3. The application must be received by the deadline date of May 31, 2019.

4. Applications must include all items listed under the required documents section.

5. Any related travel must take place while completing residency at the University of Calgary.

The following required documents must be included with the application to the PGME Office

for award eligibility:

1.Completed Application Form, including names of applicant(s), residency program and

PGY level, signed by the applicable Program Director(s).☐

2. Description of proposed educational approach ☐3. Review of literature (if applicable) ☐

4.Educational design and proposed methods (e.g. curriculum, format, testing,

refinement)☐

Successful applicants will be notified by June 28, 2019 in order to commence project work at the start of

the 2019-20 academic year.
