Workshop on Martian Phyllosilicates:Recorders of Aqueous Processes?
CNES, Paris, October 21-23, 2008
1. Although the Red planet was long thought to be habitable as seen from the Earth, the early space missions could not find evidence that Mars ever sustained long lasting bodies of liquid water.
2. Things have changed dramatically with the pioneering discovery of hydrated phyllosilicates in ancient terrains by OMEGA/Mars Express, confirmed and extended by CRISM/MRO.
A new era

3. These findings have the potential to open a new window is Mars History, for Mars to have harbored habitable conditions. The relevant sites are not located where the mere images would lead to go.
4. Does the findings of phyllosilicates in cratered terrains translate a time correlation or indicate that impacts triggered their formation?
5. Did phyllosilicate formed within perennial water?

6. Beyond the search for extraterrestrial habitable conditions, the Mars Phyllosilicate story constitutes an unique means to enter the first half billion years of planetary evolution, dominated by the heavy bombardment, when plausibly life emerged on the Earth, possibly in similar conditions. What can we learn from the Mars experience? Is the emergence of life a generic process?

7. The Mars missions motto
“Follow the water”
should become
“follow the phyllos”
A new era
Workshop on Martian Phyllosilicates:Recorders of Aqueous Processes?
CNES, Paris, October 21-23, 2008
1. Wrap-up: where and what types of phyllosilicates have been identified at Mars?
2. How these relate to our knowledge from terrestrial studies and experimental results?
3. What does this imply for Martian phyllosilicate formation processes?
4. What record of Mars surface environment?
5. what should we achieve with upcoming missions and lab simulation studies?
Objectives
Workshop on Martian Phyllosilicates:Recorders of Aqueous Processes?
CNES, Paris, October 21-23, 2008
We considered that it was the right time for Mars scientists, terrestrial clay experts, extraterrestrial matter (meteoritic) specialists, among many other relevant communities to hear from each other, merge their experience, and envision joined activities both in space and in the lab.
What do the Martian phyllosilicates tell us?
