WORKSHOP “MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT”
CARITAS INTERNACIONALIS
WORLD SOCIAL FORUM TUNIS - MARCH 2013
“Every time an air plane was flying in the blue sky, I use to stare at it. Always I have dreamt to fly with an airplane and fly far away from my country, from my miserable life, from my reality. It seemed such a remote dream but which I hoped one day would come true. One day my dream came true….I entered that plane and traveled towards the unknown with the hope for a better life…but when I arrived at the destination it wasn’t my dream waiting but a real hell. Without documentation, without home, without promises all alone in a wild life that kept violating and exploiting me…was this my dream? A.B

THE RISK:
Some of the people who migrate are part of the group most at risk and often potential victims of human trafficking,
Their movement is a result of: economic non-stability and searching for better chances in another state.
Furthermore, different states have imposed severe border controls and extra requests in the majority of world states, chances for legal migration have diminished.
Combination of these factors has resulted in an increase of irregular migration and trafficking of migrants
Migrants become potential victims of human trafficking and are exposed to multiple risks.
Factors that trigger migration and are also a cause of human trafficking
economic situation, family relations, education employment.
It is important to highlight that these problems can affect both regular and irregular migrants who have been deceived on the purpose of their travel during their recruitment
The lack of legal, safe and affordable migration channels IS ONE OF THE CAUSES OF TRAFFICKING
Consequences for the victims: violations of human rights, Violence and threatening, lack of opportunity of ask for help and assistance
(due to constant control from the tutors).
