FIRST Project is an International Cooperación Internacional Support Action financed byEuropean Commission (FP7), that aims to extend the concept of European Technology Platforms (ETPs) to Latin American,

by gathering strategic stakeholders from the different sectors included in the Future Internet, ICT Components and systems fields into one national ICT Technology Platform per country.

What is a TechnologyPlatform?

European Technology Platforms (ETPs) are industry-led, public/private

partnerships encouraged by EC to drive innovation and unite stakeholder

communities in reaching strategic research objectives of key European

ETPs: Objectives

The main mission of ETPs is to express and structure theneed for research in specific area of their competence.

Specifically they aim at:

� defining medium to long-term research and technologicalobjectives and developing roadmaps to achieve them.


� contributing to increase synergies between differentresearch actors.

ETPs: Outcome

The typical outcome of ETPs is the so-called

Strategic Research Agenda (SRA):

� “position papers” which set out R&D goals, time framesand action plans for technological advances.


� SRA are necessary to mobilise a critical mass of nationaland European public and private resources.

� SRA are adopted by the European Commission todevelop and shape the FP work programmes.

ETPs: The way they operate

The typical lifecycle of a European Technology Platform:

� Stage 1: Stakeholders getting together in order to establish their“vision” for the future development of the field concerned and to set upthe technology platform;

� Stage 2: Stakeholders define a Strategic Research Agenda settingout their common views on the necessary medium to long termresearch, development and demonstration needs for this technology;

� Stage 3: Implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda - for

ETPs: Actors in theinternational cooperation

European Technology Platforms play a strategic role inthe International cooperation in a number of ways:

�Acting as possible direct interlocutors for non-EU researchers, able to voice international needs and


EU researchers, able to voice international needs andpriorities to the EU

�Gathering potential partners in EU projects�Fostering innovation, as they join industrial and

academic interests together

�ETPs support international debates, wheregoals and strategic researches agendas canbe discussed and implemented bringingEuropean and international researcherstogether


�To help dialogue, ETPs need to havesimilar interlocutor in non-EU regions
