Works Recorded in the Harvard College Library Loan Register for 1762-1764 © David R. Whitesell, 2009 This list supplements my article, “The Harvard College Library and Its Users, 1762-1764: Reassessing the Relevance of Colonial American College Libraries,” Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, v. 118, pt. 2 (2009): 339-405. Recorded here are 681 works belonging to the Harvard College Library as of January 1764: 585 entries represent works loaned to students, faculty, and other borrowers between September 1762 and January 1764; an additional 96 entries (marked with an asterisk) represent loans made as far back as 1742 but not returned as of September 1762. The list has been compiled from entries in the Harvard College Library loan register for 1762-1764, 1 with a few supplementary entries (marked with a • ) gleaned from “A List of the Books Belonging to the late Library of Harvard College that were in the Hands of the Overseers, Governors & Students of the College & escap’d the flames [i.e. the January 24, 1764 fire].” 2 Author, title, edition, place of publication, publisher, publication date, and the number of volumes have been identified to the extent possible per the evidence provided by the 1723-1735 printed library catalogue, 3 the several hundred volumes from the pre-1764 Harvard College Library still extant at Harvard and elsewhere, 4 and various printed bibliographies and online bibliographical databases, such as the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC). 5 Entries are arranged in alphabetical order by author or, if no author, by title. Preceding each entry is the Harvard College Library shelf mark in use in 1764. This list supplements my article, “The Harvard College Library and Its Users, 1762-1764: Reassessing the Relevance of Colonial American College Libraries,” Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, v. 118, pt. 2 (2009): 339-405. Recorded here are 681 works belonging to the Harvard College Library as of January 1764: 585 entries represent works loaned to students, faculty, and other borrowers between September 1762 and January 1764; an additional 96 entries (marked with an asterisk) represent loans made as far back as 1742 but not returned as of September 1762.
