Step 1: Make a list of doctors that you might like to work with. Thesedoctors will vary based on your practice but functional medicine, restorativemedicine, anti-aging, endocrine and hormone doctors are a great place tostart if you are a health coach. (Note) Research each doctor and make notesabout pertinent details that you can mention when you speak to him or her ortheir practice manager. Action Guide - Call Them Up!

Step 2: Call the doctor’s office and ask to speak to the practice manager. Use the script and adapt it to be your own.

SCRIPT:

You: “Hi there, my name is ______________ and I’m a women’s hormonecoach who specializes in thyroid health (or use what you call yourself). I’vebeen looking for a doctor who specializes in women’s hormones that I cansend my clients to. From time to time I get clients who come my way thatreally need to be seen by a doctor and I’ve heard so much about Dr._____________ and I’d really like to explore being able to send him/hersome clients as the need arises. Is doctor ______________taking newpatients?”

The practice manager: “Who is this again?”

You: (Repeat or rephrase what you just told them because they weren’treally listening.) “My name is ______________ and I’m a women’s thyroidhealth coach (or women’s hormone health coach). I’ve been looking for adoctor who specializes in women’s hormones that I can send my clients to. From time to time I get clients who come my way that really need to be seenby a doctor and I’ve heard so much about Dr. _____________ and I’d reallylike to explore being able to send him/her some clients as the need arises. Isdoctor ______________taking new patients?” _____________________________________________________________

Action Guide - Call Them Up!

Step 2: Continued....

SCRIPT:

Them: “Yes.”

You: “Oh great. In that case I’d love to come by and meet with the doctor and ask hersome questions to see if she might be a good fit for me to refer my clients to. Whenmight be a good time for me to come by and meet the doctor?”

Them: We usually like to have people come in right before we open or over the lunchhour. Would you be able to come by next week at noon?

You: Yes that works perfectly. I will put it on my calendar. Also, Will you tell me howmany people are in your office? (This is so you can bring some treats when you stop infor your appointment.)

Optional step: If you are having trouble connecting with the practice manager or theyaren’t calling you back you can make an in person visit if you need. Call ahead to findout how many people are in the office and bring some healthy protein balls or otheryummy treats that are easy for you to make. Stop by just after lunch and introduceyourself in person. Start out by saying something like:

“My name is ______________ and I’m a women’s weight loss coach (or whatever typeof coach you are). I was in the area and I wanted to come by and introduce myself. I’vebeen looking for a doctor who specializes in women’s hormones that I can send myclients to. From time to time I get clients who come my way that really need to be seenby a doctor and I’ve heard so much about Dr. _____________ and I’d really like toexplore being able to send him/her some clients as the need arises. Is doctor______________taking new patients? In that case I’d love to set up a time to meet withthe doctor and ask him/her some questions to see if she might be a good fit for me torefer my clients to. When might be a good time for me to come by and meet thedoctor?”

Action Guide - Final Steps

Step 3: Meet with the doctor and ask them questions about them and their practice.Remember that you are building a relationship, not trying to get them to send youreferrals or be a referral partner! Keep your mindset & intention on learning about themas a doctor and you can’t go wrong.

Step 4 (optional): Ask if there is someone that works in the practice that might enjoytrying out health coaching and offer your services at a VIP discount 30 – 50% works wellfor a VIP discount range.

Step 5: Give the doctors promotional materials like a rack card (8 x 4 collateral piece),your name and contact information, benefits of working with you (what the client will seeand feel as a result of working with you), a great visual and maybe a special discount.You can put together a special promotion just for their clients and offer a dollar amountoff your initial consultation if you’d like. For cheap rack card design go towww.fiverr.com. Be sure to charge for your consultation. A good way to do this is toadd 50 -75 dollars to what you’d normally charge for a session.

Step 6: Follow up and keep the momentum going. Each doctor is different and you’llwant to gauge how busy the doctor is. But a general rule of thumb is to follow up withthe doctor within the first month of contact. Ask if you can do anything to help and be ofservice. If you're having trouble connecting with the doctor try inviting them to be aguest expert and interview them for your blog or newsletter. Keep in contact with thedoctor and reach out at least every two months to build your connection andrelationship. Every time a doctor sends someone your way send him or her a thank younote. I used to send special gifts to the doctors who sent me lots of clients on holidaysand their birthdays. Got to take care of your peeps!
