How to reconcile these seemingly contradictory claims? Well, as Jesus and the many prophets throughout the ages have shown, to speak out against abuse and injusce, to speak up for the marginalised and the vulnerable, to stand up against evil and violence, to work for truth, reconciliaon and jusce, and to walk the talk of peace inevitably provokes resistance, hoslity and violence. So, it was for the prophet Jeremiah, whose mistreatment is described in the first reading today. So it is for the prophets in our own me, such as Marn Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Oscar Romero. So it was for Jesus. Alas, the way to peace is not necessarily peaceful. Indeed, it can be very dangerous and painful. So too for us as Chrisans as we work for a beer, more just and more peaceful world. Our vocaon is not to maintain the status quo; it is to change the world. It is not to keep the peace, but to serve the peace. This will somemes necessitate rocking the boat that is the status quo, and facing the confrontaon and division – and perhaps even violence - that may well result. Chrisan life was never meant to be easy! In facing the difficules that confront us as we work for peace, the Leer to the Hebrews exhorts the early Chrisans to whom it was addressed and us today to “persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” It reminds us to “consider how he [Jesus] endured such opposion from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” Our inspiraon in working for jusce and peace (for there will be no peace without jusce) springs from our faith in Jesus himself. Our perseverance in the work is sustained by our hope in his promise of new life and a new creaon. And, most importantly, our movaon is always love. “Without love,” says St Therese of Lisieux, “even the most brilliant deeds count as nothing.” It is working faithfully in this way, with the energies of love, that, as the Jesuit priest and paleontologist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin SJ (1881-1955) wrote, “the day will come when . . . we shall harness for God the energies of love. And on that day, for the second me in the history of the world, we shall have discovered fire.” Let each of us hold firm to serve the peace and help fuel that fire. Anne Hunt © Redemptorists 2019

Follow Truth

Jesus speaks in startling words in today’s gospel: "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” Christians faithfully proclaim that Jesus is the Prince of Peace and that he came to bring peace to the world! How to reconcile these seemingly contradictory claims? Well, as Jesus and the many prophets throughout the ages have shown, to speak out against abuse and injustice, to speak up for the marginalised and the vulnerable, to stand up against evil and violence, to work for truth, reconciliation and justice, and to walk the talk of peace inevitably provokes resistance, hostility and violence. So, it was for the prophet Jeremiah, whose mistreatment is described in the first reading today. So it is for the prophets in our own time, such as Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Oscar Romero. So it was for Jesus. Alas, the way to peace is not necessarily peaceful. Indeed, it can be very dangerous and painful. So too for us as Christians as we work for a better, more just and more peaceful world. Our vocation is not to maintain the status quo; it is to change the world. It is not to keep the peace, but to serve the peace. This will sometimes necessitate rocking the boat that is the status quo, and facing the confrontation and division – and perhaps even violence - that may well result. Christian life was never meant to be easy! In facing the difficulties that confront us as we work for peace, the Letter to the Hebrews exhorts the early Christians to whom it was addressed and us today to “persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” It reminds us to “consider how he [Jesus] endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.” Our inspiration in working for justice and peace (for there will be no peace without justice) springs from our faith in Jesus himself. Our perseverance in the work is sustained by our hope in his promise of new life and a new creation. And, most importantly, our motivation is always love.
