  • >>On Tuesday 13 July I had the pleasure of taking a group of Apprentice Chefs on a field trip to Beenleigh Abattoir. This field trip was of great value to the apprentices; developing their product knowledge and skills within the meat industry. It also gave them an opportunity to share this experience with other apprentices who work in the industry and are also trained by work skills.

The day began at 8am, (I might add a bit early for some) security checks, and then fitting out ready for the big tour. As you can tell by the photo rather sexy gear was worn by all.

The students enjoyed a highly informative tour of the abattoir, with the key interest for all being the boning room. The plant operates a two-shift kill and bone for a daily capacity of 1428 head with approximately 800 employees. It operates with the latest technological improvements.

The health and welfare of animals processed by Teys is of primary importance at all stages of livestock handling. Good husbandry and strict quarantine measures are promoted to

    ensure the considerate t reatment

of animals and the maintenance of disease-free stock.

At Teys, Food Safety is a top priority and comprehensive quality assurance program is applied extensively throughout the entire process from receiving livestock to shipping and load out.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a process used for the identification, evaluation and control of food safety hazards. Teys operates a comprehensive HACCP program which, in combination with good hygiene practices and education of food handlers, is pivotal to ensure that the highest standards of food safety are met.

Part of the tour was also going through Teys Processing Plant where beef products were processed to a further stage ready for the retail sector and restaurants.

We then headed to Windaroo Tavern for a complementary lunch provided by Bidvest Food Service. Many Thanks to

Richard: Account Executive from Bidvest who organised this event.

After lunch we had an accreditation and training session by a Training Facilitator; Kelly Payne from

Meat and Live Stock Australia on meat grading from MSA standards.

This field trip proved to be very educational and enjoyable by all who attended.

Due to the success of this day, we will be running these field trips again in the near future. We will keep you posted.

Apprentices Day OutOThe Day began at 8am, (I might add a bit early for

  • School BasedApprenticeships and Traineeships

It is becoming more and more apparent that there are real skill shortages. Not just in a few sectors of businesses, but in all areas and it spreads right across Australia. Every time you turn on the news or pick up a newspaper, there is always something reported about this ongoing national concern. Many people talk about this, but do we ever here from groups that are actively attacking this challenge head on?In Queensland, a really hard hitting positive programme which is tackling the skills shortage problems head on is the School Based Apprenticeship/ Traineeship Scheme (SAT). This is not a new scheme in QLD, but in recent times the Queensland Government and the Department of Education and Training (DET) have put some real muscle behind this scheme. QLD has always led the way in School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships (SAT), but now QLD DET has made every School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship a Priority 1 in the skilled shortage industries. Schools and DET are trying to double the SAT igures so that there would be approximately 60% of seniors in most schools engaged in a School based training program of some kind or another.

WHY HAVE THEY DONE THISOur future work force will depend on this current and future crop of students that are now in years 10, 11 and 12 to fill the gaps

that exist in skills shortage industries. So it makes sense to offer these students an entry into their chosen industry while they are still attached to school. Under this program the students can be learning real skills from actual real workplaces

and be earning an income. This program has proven a real success in keeping those students at school that are at risk of leaving school before completing year 12 by giving them a clear pathway into a career once they leave school. The SAT has an obvious advantage as well over any potential rivals for a position in their targeted industry as they will have superior skills right out of school over any student who has not participated in a SAT. If the student completes their SAT while still at school, all vocational assessments are reported directly back to the school where the completed units and qualification earns them points towards their senior certificate.

    ?

How SATs can work for your businessSATs oer employers great benets. SATs oer you value for money and can be an eective way to attract and recruit future sta. Employing SATs allows your business to experience a great deal of satisfaction as your SAT learns new skills and condence and makes the transition from student to valued worker. A sense of pride is another benet employers can be rewarded with, considering

that these students have actively chosen your industry from hundreds of other possibilities. Many students add great enthusiasm to the workplace and become an integral team member down the track. As they are young and new to your industry and conditioned to taking direction at school they seldom come with any preconceived ideas or prejudices, therefore they respond to direction and instruction very easily.SAT wages are calculated on the number of hours the student works each week. Students do not receive sick

leave, recreation leave or public holidays, but are paid an extra amount in lieu of these entitlements. They do not get paid for undertaking o-the-job training either, so as you can see you only pay for them when they are working, this makes them a cost eective sta member. Because they are only required to be at your workplace at a minimum approximately 1 day a week, they can be very good at lling the gap when you are experiencing growth in your business but you dont have quite enough work for a full time sta member.

Recruiting a SATContacting local schools which may have students interested in your industry. Most schools today have a vocational education department. This department will have a vocational education and training coordinator (VET coordinator). This VET coordinator does a sensational job of getting all parties engaged in SATs.

Informing people in your industry or company that you are oering a SAT.

Placing an advertisement in the paper.

Oering the position to a student on a structured work experience with your organisation

    Contacting a group training organisation

    Using a recruitment company

Phoning a Job Network employer line

Tell work skills and we can place it on our positions vacant web page.

How can Work Skills help?work skills oer exible training for SAT students at their workplace in the industries of :

Automotive -Mechanical, Paint and Panel, Parts interpretingHospitality - Commercial Cookery, OperationsBusiness and Business Administration.

Within these industry groups we can oer training as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship. Whichever qualication or industry you choose; we oer the same quality training. Our advantage is that we come to the workplace and deliver hands on practical training with the SAT in the actual work place so that they can experience learning in a real world environment. Because we oer one on one training, your SAT does not have to ght for the trainers attention as we are there for your SATs needs exclusively. Our model of training is also less intrusive of the school system and the students school holidays as we do not take the students away to complete blocks of training.

  • STUDENT / EMPLOYERO F T H E Q U A R T E R

    Cassandra Austin

Question: Why did you choose this apprenticeship and what have been some of the highlights for you so far?

S t u d e n tThis quarter we would like to highlight a recently completed Diploma of Business student: Cassandra Austin. Cassandra has worked at Campbell Brothers Chemical Division within the Customer Service Department for the last 4 years. Her very demanding job role includes liaising with internal and external networks to organise despatch and transportation of chemicals both within Australia and internationally.

When asked why she chose this Qualication and the highlights so far, Cassandra states: I chose the Diploma of Business Qualication to enhance my knowledge and increase my skill set within this area. I have found the most rewarding part of the Qualication to be my ability to apply and implement my detailed knowledge, particularly with reference to coaching and mentoring within my job role. My aim is to further enhance my knowledge and skills by beginning a Bachelor of Science and Engineering at USQ and in the future to advance within Campbell Brothers Company at a Management level.

In relation to Cassandras capabilities Work Skills Trainer Gabriel Kaszab and Business Manager Amanda MacLaren both commented: Cassandra is an outstanding student who at all times has exhibited a very high level of commitment to her studies. She has consistently been able to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and associated workplace application of the Business principles covered within the Qualication. We congratulate her on her successful completion of BSB50207 (Diploma of Business) and wish her continued success in her future studies.

Question: In your opinion, what has been the impact of training apprentices for your business?

    Pizza Capers

E m p l o y e rThe greatest benet of having trainees in our workplace is that it has enabled us to establish a really great pathway for our team. From when they rst start with us as a 14 or 15 year old casual, and giving them the pathway to progress and move through the company right up to being store managers and in some cases, area managers. Each step along the way theyve received set training that is not only hugely benecial in their roles but it is also nationally accredited. This benets our business and also means that our sta are developing a career portfolio for their future. This process has greatly assisted our ability to retain sta with the average of most of our sta sticking around for a minimum of two years plus, which as far as I am aware the industry average for Hospitality is around 6-9 months; so we are well above that.As a multi-store owner ( 5 stores), having well trained sta has been the single, most critical component of us being able to expand and grow. Having condence in the sta being able to operate at night or when I am not there is a great achievement. This is something that was not possible as little as 2 years ago. Systemised training and processes both internally and through the assistance of Work Skills is one of the best things that weve done as a company. It really

enabled us to expand the business 500% in just 3 years.

What is the internal development program that you have implemented?Within the 5 stores we have 13 managers; 9 of them are currently enrolled in either a Certicate IV in Frontline Management or a Diploma of Management. We now have sta looking for learning opportunities, choosing Pizza Capers as an employer of choice because of our commitment to our people. Through nationally accredited qualications we are able to create a win:win workplace. We retain sta and have a more developed and aware team of people and they achieve recognition for their eort through acquiring qualications. What could be better!

As anyone who reads the Big O knows I am never short on things to discuss, especially when they are exciting, new and good for training and doing business. This time I would like to oer you some exciting news about two initiatives that can have a major impact on how you look at up skilling your senior sta and also how Work Skills has made it even easier to get started in training with us.

New Commonwealth incentives for higher qualications

Firstly, I would like to give you some really good news. As of this year, the Commonwealth Government has added a select group of Diploma Qualications to its Training Incentives Scheme. That translates to funding for training payable to employers of up to $4,000.00.

    These incentives are designed to oset the cost you the employer would incur for training. Previously funding was only available up to Certicate IV level qualications and Diplomas have only been oered under a Fee for Service arrangement. Not anymore and the two Funded Diploma qualications Work Skills are oering that are applicable to this incentive are;

BSB51107 Diploma of Management and SIT50307 Diploma of Hospitality.

These qualications are traditionally used by employers and employees to learn the skills and knowledge

required to become a supervisor, manager or even run yours, or their own business.

It is a great opportunity for employers to up skill their Managers and future leaders of their business and obtain that edge on your competitors. As well as improving the management and eciency of your business you also enjoy the benets of having senior sta appreciate the eorts the company is putting into their careers.

If you wish to know more about this exciting new arrangement or other qualications available under this scheme contact us now at work skills on 1300 360 567 work skills New Sign Up Process

work skills as always, is continually looking for ways to improve its own business and eciencies and not only for itself but for all stakeholders we do business with. This in mind we have created a new electronic sign up process which incorporates the speed and convenience of email and internet and the reliability of the common old telephone. The new process we have created takes a third of the time and is less intrusive to complete, thus resulting in us averaging a two week turn around to complete sign up inductions. So getting started with the training is even easier, faster and more exible than ever before. Everyone wins, the employer receives their incentive faster because the training plan is being completed more eciently and the student can start their training sooner keeping them focused on the trade they have chosen. Group Training Companies will benet greatly from our new systems as all of our induction information is sent to them electronically and is able to be shared and kept for future reference. If you wish to know more about the new sign up induction system, please ring our oce 1300 360 567 and ask to speak with our enrolment ocer.
