Words to the wise…

All students enrolled in the Honors English 10 course must complete summer assignments 1-4. Each is worth one test grade. Test grades are 50% of the overall class grade.

The work you submit must be your own and original to the assignment and year. Plagiarized material will be not accepted. Any plagiarism, even of only a line or two, will result in a zero grade for the assignment.

Without prior approval, late summer work will not be accepted. Work not received on Turnitin.com by deadline (12 PM that day) will be assigned a zero grade.

Students who chose not to complete the summer assignments will receive zeros for those assignments for the first quarter and are strongly encouraged to drop the course before the add/drop deadline.

Students who earn a score lower than 65% on the “Style” essay are strongly encouraged to drop the course before the add/drop deadline.

Deadlines will be adjusted for students who enroll in the course after summer deadlines have passed. All students will be given the same amount of time to complete the assignment, regardless of their enrollment date.

Students are encouraged not to enroll in the course after the school year has already begun since the work load may prove too great.

ASSIGNMENT 1: Reading and Journal Entry

Read Style, Lessons in Clarity and Grace by Joseph M. Williams and Joseph Bizup, “Part One: Style as a Choice, Lesson 1: Understanding Style.” Pgs. 2-8

As you read, highlight excerpts which speak to you because they either inspire you and/or you recognize that you have felt the same way. I will be ascertaining what kind of reader-writer you already are in addition to how well you take the suggested direction of the writers. Write a reflection of at least 600 words that responds to the following prompt:

Using William’s and Bizup’s first lesson in understanding style, reflect on your more difficult writing experiences- citing and referencing your challenges in understanding, sentence construction, apathy, etc. Be sure to quote (and use in-text citations) from the first lesson material when you are making comparisons. Also, be sure to make specific references to literature you have read- where you feel like that author has committed the sin of “turgid,” pretentious, prose. You may use first person, but please do not rely on the personal pronouns to explain yourself.

Bad example of personal pronoun use: I feel that when I read writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne, with his long sentences and elevated vocabulary, I lose his point entirely, making my ability to write about his main ideas really difficult for me.

Good Rewrite: Long-winded, bombastic writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne lose me. Additionally, having to write about their main ideas is arduous.

Follow the rules of MLA format and manuscript form as you type your journal response. See pages 7-9. See the grading rubric on page 13.

ASSIGNMENT 2*: An Analysis

Read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Following your reading, choose one of the prompts and respond to it for this assignment. Be sure to use in-text citations when quoting from the text.

Write a formal essay of at least 850 words in which you discuss the symbolic significance of the mockingbird to the central theme of the novel. Support your thesis with evidence from the text.

Write a formal essay of at least 850 words in which you discuss the relation of plot progression to the building of this bildungsroman. Cite specific characters and examples of their growth from innocence/ignorance to maturity/knowledge within the story.

Write a formal essay of at least 850 words in which you reflect upon the writing style of Harper Lee. Use Style to prompt your analysis of whether or not Lee writes in clear, graceful style- making her style “good” or “bad.” Ideally, you will use specific language that describes the manner of speaking, according to the characters. An excellent reference for this can be found online with the MacMillan Dictionary, “Types of language and general words for language - synonyms or related words.”

o http://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/thesaurus-category/american/types-of-language- and-general-words-for-language

Follow the rules of MLA format and manuscript form as you type your essay response. See pages 7-9. See the grading rubric on page 14.

*Please be aware that you will take a comprehensive novel test on To Kill a Mockingbird within the first week of the course. This assessment will test whether you have read and understood the complete original work. Pay attention to important details as you read. You will encounter test questions that cannot be answered using Spark Notes.

A FEW NOTES ON THE LITERARY ANALYSIS ESSAY

Your Thesis Statement: When you write a literary analysis essay, you are making an argument about a text. Therefore, a literary analysis essay first requires you to formulate a clear and specific thesis statement that responds to the prompt. A thesis statement of a literary analysis essay makes an original and debatable claim about the text that can be supported with textual evidence.

The Introduction: Begin the essay with a statement that establishes the subject of the essay and provides context for the argument. Identify the title, author, and genre of the work and provide a brief summary of the text. End the introduction with your clear and specific thesis statement that responds to the prompt.

The Body: In the body of the essay, you should provide at least three instances in the text that support your thesis. When you present new evidence, be sure to include an in-text citation that indicates the location of the evidence within the text and explain how the evidence supports your thesis.

ASSIGNMENT 3- To Kill a Mockingbird Extension

Work should be submitted on the same document to Turnitin.com.

Part I: Real-life comparisonsGo online and follow the first link below to PBS’s 85.38- minute, 2-part documentary presentation on the Scottsboro Boys, titled “American Experience Scottsboro An American Tragedy.” Watch the presentations.

1. Part I: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igNepPqaAkc.

2. Part II: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMu4dEbAQAQ

During this viewing, note immediate connections between the Scottsboro case and Tom Robinson’s case in To Kill a Mockingbird. To help collect your thoughts, create a 2 column chart which compares the similarities of each trial, from the people involved to the economic factors involved in the case. Try and list as many similarities as possible.

In at least 150 words , type a written response exposing the strongest comparisons. Be sure to use in-text citations, referring to both the novel and to the documentary.

Part II: Real-life inspires art*Harper Lee was clear in stating that the Scottsboro trial had a major impact on her, but she wasn’t the only artist to take up the pen about this issue of racism and intolerance. Harlem Renaissance author Langston Hughes also wrote about the trials and tribulations of his fellow Americans, and he specifically wrote a volume of poetry inspired by the Scottsboro boys. Read “Scottsboro” on the following page and answer the correlating questions listed below. Be sure to write in complete sentences.

1. Why does Hughes suggest the 'world' should 'turn pale'?

2. What can you discover about the people listed by name in the poem?

3. What is Hughes suggesting about the '8 Black Boys' by associating them with these figures?

4. Given the way that Hughes frames the situation of the Scottsboro men, what can you say about his perspective on race relations?

Follow the rules of MLA format and manuscript form as you type your responses. See pages 7-9. See the grading rubric on page 15.

MLA FORMATWhen writing about literature, you will identify the exact source of your textual evidence in two ways.

First, you will include in-text citations that indicate the precise location of the evidence within the text.

Second, you will attach a Works Cited page to your paper that provides the bibliographic information for the text you have discussed.

In-Text Citations The following is an excerpt from an essay analyzing Susan Glaspell’s “A Jury of Her Peers.” Note the way the writer incorporates quotations from the text into her analysis. Also note the format of the in-text citation. When drawing from only one source, you only need to include the page number. Identifying the author is not necessary.

Although Mrs. Peters’s growing empathy for Minnie stems largely from her

observations, it is also prompted by her negative reaction to the patronizing comments of

the male investigators. At several points in the story, her body language reveals her

feelings. For example, when Mr. Hale remarks that “women are used to worrying over

trifles,” both women move closer together and remain silent. When the county attorney

asks, “for all their worries, what would we do without the ladies?” the women do not

speak, nor do they “unbend” (199). The fact that the women respond in exactly the same

way reveals the extent to which they are bonding.

The Works Cited Page The following is a sample Works Cited page from the same essay. Notice that the in-text citation in the paragraph links to the source listed below.

FOR MORE HELP WITH MLA FORMAT- Citing a Website

Modern Language Association (MLA) has provided a set of guidelines to assist you. Please go online to the OWL at Purdue University Writing Center and access the links under “MLA Format: Electronic Sources.” One important item to note is that the URL is no longer necessary in citations.

On websites, most titles appear above the informational text. Note all sites will have authors, and that is okay. Do your best to make sure the author is not included. Publishers (those who finance the site) usually appear in one of the top corners of the site or all the way at the bottom, near what is probably the copyright. In place of a missing date (i.e. 7 Aug. 2015), use the copyright.

I recommend that you read the information on the OWL website and create your Works Cited page before you write the essays.

Remember: You must follow the rules of MLA Format for all summer assignments.

MANUSCRIPT FORM FOR ALL TYPED PAPERS

You must follow the rules of manuscript form for every typed assignment you submit throughout the course. Follow the step-by-step instructions below.

1. Open a Word document.

2. Select Times New Roman, 12-point as your font.

3. Set one-inch margins on all sides of the text. Your document should already do this for you as by default. You can check under the “Page Layout” tab and “Margins.”

4. Under the “Home” tab and “Paragraph,” click the button that aligns all text with the left margin.

5. Insert a running header that will appear on every page with the correct page number:

On the tool bar above your document, click on the “Insert” tab.

Go to the “Header & Footer” section. Select “Page Number.”

Choose the “Top of the Page” drop down menu. Then select “Plain Number 3.” Your page numbers will be inserted at the top right hand corner of your pages.

Under the “Design” tab, click “Different First Page” to remove the page number from the first page of your document.

Click into a page number and change its font to match the rest of the essay. At this time you should also type your last name as you see below.

6. At top left corner of the first page, type the following header:

Your first and last name

Mrs. Hornung

Honors English 10

Date (day month year- 7 August 2015)

7. After the date, continue to the next line and type the title. Your title should reflect the central idea of your essay. Do not entitle your essay “Summer Assignment.” Capitalize the first letter of the title and all other important words within the title. For example, do not capitalize articles or prepositions unless they are the first word of the title. Center the title using the center button on the Paragraph toolbar.

DO NOT underline, italicize, or enclose the title in quotation marks.

DO NOT make your title bigger and bolder than the text.

DO NOT type the title in a different font than you used for the text.

DO NOT add extra line spaces before or after the title. Just continue to the next line and begin typing your essay.

8. Indent the first line for each paragraph five spaces. One press of the tab button should do this. The default for the tab button is five spaces.

9. Double-space ALL text. Do not put extra spaces between paragraphs or before or after your title.

Under the Paragraph tab, choose Select Line Spacing Options Set the rules as you see below
