y The random samples the work of one or moreemployees are periodic interval to determine theproportion of total operations that is accounted for in

a particular activity.y It used for resource utilization .

y It used to check the time spent by worker in a job.

y It used to avoidable delays.



y To estimate the percentage of a protracted time periodconsumed by various activity states of a resourcesuch as equipment, machines or operators.

y To determine the allowances for inclusion in standardtimes.

y To indicate the nature of the distribution of work

P -> Percentage or true proportion of activity or idling which is being observed based on pilot study

S -> Relative error of the true proportion PC -> Constant values 1, 2 & 3 corresponding level of 68.3%, 95% and 99% respectively .



Economical to use and Usually costs considerably lessthan a continuous time study

Can be used to measure many activities that ar

impractical to measure by time study Not necessary to use a trained work measurement

analyst to make the observations.

Work sampling measurements may be made with a

pre- assigned degree of reliability. Measures the utilization of people and equipment

directly.



Eliminates the necessity of using stop-watch formeasurements.

Provides observation over a sufficiently long period of

time to decrease the chance of day to day variationaffecting the results.



y It is of little value in helping to improve work methodsand does not offer some of the opportunities formethods analysis that accompanies time study

methods.y Statistical work sampling may not be understood by

workers .

y If random sampling is not done, the results may be

biased.
