Why are we here?

Thames Water must control the flow of combined storm water and foul water into the Thames to prevent pollution.

This scheme will allow 50% of the total volume discharged to the Thames Tideway to be intercepted and treated.

Energy use and CO2 reduction

• Using energy contributes to local air pollution

• Save energy and money by using:– Time switches

– Thermostats

– Energy efficient lighting

– Insulation

• Turn it off – when not in use!

• Turn off your monitors at the end of the day –EVERYDAY!

• Put rubbish into designated bins or re-use items– Have a water bottle instead of using lots of plastic cups.

• Do not scrunch up paper – keep it flat – you will fit more in the bins and we require less site pick ups, reduced CO2 emissions.

Why stop silt pollution

• Nutrients can runoff within the silt and stimulate algal growth which affects the whole ecology of a water course.

• This can kill all the life in the water course.

What causes silt pollution?

• Rainwater run off from uncovered areas of the site,

• Pumping out and dewatering of excavations,

• Tunneling operations and cleaning of ditches and drains.

Invasive Plants

• Be aware when starting on a new site of invasive plants which are illegal to spread:

Japanese Knotweed Giant Hogweed

• Contact with Giant Hogweed sap can result in severe burns to the

affected areas, producing swelling and severe, painful blistering.

• Please ensure adequate controls and a plan is place. Both Giant

Hogweed and Japanese Knotweed are on this site. No works should

be carried out without consultation of the environment and safety team.

Nuisance - Noise

• The project currently monitors noise.

• Noise is any unwanted sound. We monitor noise to ensure a good quality of life for those in the surrounding environment.

• It is therefore important that work which creates noise is limited to working week, day time activities. Any other time must be in consultation with the environment team.

• Please make an effort to keep noise to a minimum and use equipment which will reduce noise emissions.

Waste

• Skips or bins are signed according to waste type

• If skips are not in good condition inform your supervisor

Ensure that:• Waste is disposed of in the appropriate

containers in each yard

• General waste (food wrappers, paper, card) must be disposed of separately to hazardous waste, spoil and mixed construction waste.

• Contaminated Land

- Oils and chemicals in the soil– Unusual smells or discolouration in the soil

– Pollutants within the soil such as plastics, metals, aerosol cans

• Archaeology- Stop work if you find any archaeological artefacts

such as coins, bones, jewellery or pottery and contact your supervisor

- Bones can carry health risks such as Anthrax

• Consent Conditions– You will be made aware of planning conditions by

your foreman/supervisor. The environment team will audit and monitor to ensure these conditions are being met. Any breach of conditions which are outlined to you will face serious consequences.
