Sonic Arts Centre, Derry

Part1 final project. An overview.Located adjacent to the Verbal Arts Centre, the Sonic Research Centre Derry/Londonderry is a new cen-tre for acoustic investigation and experimentation. The centre exam-ines the possibilities of sound for performance, medical research and materiality amongst others. The building has been designed to work in conjunction rather than in com-petition with the pioneering Son-ic Arts Research Centre already at Queen’s University Belfast. This mutually beneficial relationship will help sustain and support both, promoting Northern Ireland as a new centre for the sonic arts. The building incorporates a ‘plug and play’ concept which is imple-mented throughout the performance spaces and the incidental spaces creating interesting and unexpected recording spaces that enables mu-sicians and others to record when and where they want. The users of the building can also use an appli-cation on their phone to remotely listen to performances and other recordings as they are performed throughout the building. This pro-vides an interface between sonic artists and the general public as well as raising awareness of the acoustic qualities of built space.

The scheme also reinstates what was previously the bishops garden, pro-viding a newly designed public gar-den that connects to the building as well as the adjacent sonic arts centre and the rest of the city.
