Sonic Arts Centre, Derry
Part1 final project. An overview.Located adjacent to the Verbal Arts Centre, the Sonic Research Centre Derry/Londonderry is a new cen-tre for acoustic investigation and experimentation. The centre exam-ines the possibilities of sound for performance, medical research and materiality amongst others. The building has been designed to work in conjunction rather than in com-petition with the pioneering Son-ic Arts Research Centre already at Queen’s University Belfast. This mutually beneficial relationship will help sustain and support both, promoting Northern Ireland as a new centre for the sonic arts. The building incorporates a ‘plug and play’ concept which is imple-mented throughout the performance spaces and the incidental spaces creating interesting and unexpected recording spaces that enables mu-sicians and others to record when and where they want. The users of the building can also use an appli-cation on their phone to remotely listen to performances and other recordings as they are performed throughout the building. This pro-vides an interface between sonic artists and the general public as well as raising awareness of the acoustic qualities of built space.
The scheme also reinstates what was previously the bishops garden, pro-viding a newly designed public gar-den that connects to the building as well as the adjacent sonic arts centre and the rest of the city.

1. Roof Structure, Ridge Lantern.New white-painted steel A-frame roof structure with continuous steel-framed ridge lantern in conjunction with existing steel trusses, purlins and bracing (refurbished-insitu), new suspended steel-framed maintenance walkway and secured access stairs, etc. Retain existing render-faced concrete padstones at each truss-end and render-faced concrete ring-beam infill between bays.
2. Roof Glazing. New single glazed white polyester powder coated aluminium-framed roof glazing system, with auto-opening vents linked to BMS Controls.
3. Brickwork Superstructure.Reinstate 5 no. courses of brickwork at eaves to original corbelled profile and brick string course. Provide new sandstone cills internally and externally with stooled ends, replace selected parapet copings and re-build sections of existing brickwork façade (including brick specials to match existing) after removal of brick chimney, reinstate brick specials.Form new structural opening in existing NW Gable as new Main Entrance. Clean all brickwork surfaces internally and externally. Replace fractured / spalled brick.
4. Windows.Install white polyester powder coated aluminium-framed double-glazed windows within existing structural openings, generally fixed-pane but with selected openable vents at Temperate Zone.
5. Repointing.Repoint existing brick facades internally and externally using lime-based mortar and make good all mortar joints damaged by redundant window grilles and sundry brackets, etc.
6. Rainwater Goods.New black polyester powder coated ogee profile cast aluminium rainwater guttering with leaf-guards and round-section downspouts.
7. Planar Glass SW Gable.New planar glass gable and primary steelwork (museum end) with automatic sliding double doors and planar glass internal porch with two pairs of double doors, level access, weathered threshold, ironmongery and manifestation.
8. Entrance Porch.New white polyester powder coated primary steel box frame with stainless steel 'spider' clamps supporting planar glass walls and roof. Sliding glass doors, level access, weathered threshold, ironmongery and manifestation.
10. Replacement Walkways.New perimeter walkways to comprise steel frame, asphalt-coated insitu reinforced concrete slab, heating pipework ducts (with continuous cast iron grille), continuous drainage & ventilation gaps (as appropriate) and refix modified salvaged guardrails.Rebuild approx. 450 mm high section of existing masonry as continuous support for new walkway slab within Temperate Zone and reinstate salvaged cast iron columns as appropriate for suspended walkways within Tropical Zone. New contemporary walkway elements to comprise white polyester painted galv. m.s. frame with slip-resistant planar glass floor panels and feature planar glass guarding to facilitate improved access and circulation for larger groups of visitors and to provide enhanced viewing opportunities.
11. Horticulture.Remove redundant soil, plants and ad-hoc retaining structures. Retain salvaged dry-stone walling for later re-use and protect selected tree specimens through the duration of the works.
12. Paths, Planters, Waterfall & Steps.Form new cast insitu reinforced concrete waterfall and ponds tanked and clad in natural stone. New wall and terrace structures to retain soil within raised / sloped banks and suit new path layout and planting proposals (by Eden Project or equal).
16. Hardstandings.Remove existing external brick planter along the long NW elevation and existing tarmac path and road surfaces at both gable ends and reduce levels to accommodate new non-slip natural stone and concrete paved surfaces.
