A production assistant, also known as a PA, is a member of the film crew and is a job title used in filmmaking and television for a person responsible for various aspects of a production. The job of a PA can vary greatly depending on the budget and specific requirements of a production as well as whether or not the production is unionized.

In unionized television and feature film, production assistants are usually divided into different categories: Set PA, Truck PA, Locations PA, Office PA, or Set Runner and Extra PA or Daily. At Harlem Commonwealth Council, we create a learning atmosphere that address each type of PA. We fully prepare our students for direct entry into today’s film industry.

What is a Production Assistant?

Although an internationally acclaimed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, since establishing himself in New York City, Dr. Joseph Tait has been devoted to the Harlem community. Investing his time and attention as the Chairman of Community Planning Board 9, a member of the Francis Delafield Hospital Community Board, and a member of the Borough Board of the Manhattan Borough President’s office, he later served as Chairman of the Harlem Com-monwealth Council’s Board of Directors, and thereafter became President and CEO of the corporation. During his term he has: initiated the focused spectrum of “lives-changing” educational and professional training programs in our roster. Dr.Tait spearheaded the HCC building project that expanded the HCC’s headquarters to support new human development & community development projects.

About Our President and CEO

About Harlem Commonwealth CouncilHCC was founded in 1967 by resident Harlem business owners, as a result of President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s Great Society Legislation. For 45 years, the Harlem Commonwealth Council, Inc. (HCC) has provided unwavering service to the Harlem community and its residents in the form of community-based economic development. HCC began by acquiring real estate along the West 125th Street main business corridor, acquiring national businesses that sought to either discontinue operations or relo-cate out of the Harlem community. HCC also provided funding and related services to help “incubate” local businesses.

We have managed both youth and family service programs in our community. This includes scholarship funds, our high school internship program, summer youth program, youth technology programs, and transition justice programs as well as our implemented after school programs with local Harlem schools.

We train our students to become different types of PA. Set PA’s work on the physical set of the production, whether on location or on a sound stage. They report to the assistant director (AD) department and key set PA if one is so designated.

Duties include echoing (calling out) “rolls” and “cuts”, locking up and wrangling actors and facilitating communication between departments, distributing paperwork and related tasks as mandated by the ADs.

Set PAs usually work 12- to 16-hour days with the possibility at the end of a shoot to work more than 20 hours a single day and are regularly the “first to arrive and the last to leave”. Each student understands this commitment.

What do our students say?

Work Now Employment Training ProgramOur training program was created to foster a new avenue for individuals to attain economic-self sufficiency while promoting ethnic diversity in promising industry areas that are too often overlooked by residents of low-income communities. While focusing on the core skills needed to succeed in this burgeoning field that supports a variety of areas within the Entertainment Sector, we’ve equipped the enterprising trainee who excels in this program with skills and tools to reach beyond the status quo.

Our trainees are intended to bridge digital, technology, cultural, and interpersonal divides as they learn to navigate: a new lexicon; production organization and personnel; set etiquette and operations; radio communications; production office procedures; understanding various production forms, documents, and reports; and so much more. Harlem is an ideal location for Production Assistants to learn about the industry. Hundred of movies are filmed in Harlem. We recognize the need to introduce our own Harlem residents this exciting industry.

Very helpful and well organized. It was a very long day, invalua-ble overall, very successful tool!”

Normally a program this good has big dollar signs attached, this one’s free. FREE! Thank you ”

This program was very in-tense, I plan on studying all of the paperwork that was given to me. ”Another dream came true for me. Thank you Dr. Tait and HCC! ”

Production companies are looking for the best and only the best. Our students who want to be PA’s are self-motivators and independent workers. We prepare them to possess exceptional communication skills: both verbal and written via our state of the art Macintosh Lab.

At HCC, we realize that efficient relaying of information is a critical job function and a walkie-talkie as well as other tools are heavily utilized on set to communicate between the AD staff as well as all other departments.

Quixote’s P.A. Bootcamp is designed as a real-world, practical job-training program. Imagine entering your first day of work as a P.A. Wouldn’t it be better to know: a bit about this whole new world, its language and customs, and a whole lot about what is expected of you, as well as what is going on all around you? Quixote PA Boot Camp has been a valuable partner to ensure our goal of preparing each trainee thoroughly and completely for the job of Production Assistant. It’s often the first step into the entertainment business for many highly successful P.A.’s who go on to master another expertise and are currently working in the industry. This includes producers, executives, and directors too!
