PA RACIAL EQUITY REPORT A STEP TO ANTI-RACISTWORK

Pennsylvania's Department of Human Services has released itsfirstRacial Equity Report. The report highlights the departmentsongoing efforts to "promote diversity, equity, and inclusion through thiswork in order to be a partner in correcting systemic racism andinequities." The report covers work in health equity, economic justice,early childhood education, child welfare, and juvenile justice and ismeant as a starting point for DHS and its partners to guide effortsmoving forward.

The USDA has updated college student eligibility for the SupplementalNutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This act temporarily expandsSNAP eligibility to students in higher education enrolled at least parttime. The new eligibility criteria come at a time when 40% of highereducation students are reporting food insecurity. Learn more.

The Pa. Department of Human Services is holding webinars tointroduce the Resource Information and Services Enterprise – or RISEPA – an upcoming statewide resource and referral tool that will enableadvocates and individuals in need to more quickly identify appropriateservice providers. It could happen.-- Ryan Cumming, ELCA Program Director for Hunger Education The United States is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, and its economy is by far the largest. Yet, the U.S. has one of the highest ratesof child poverty among developed countries, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. According to the U.S.Census Bureau, in 2019 (the most recent year for data), 14.4% of children – about 10.5 million children – in the U.S. were living in poverty. This istremendous progress from 2010, when 22% of U.S. children were living in poverty.

God richly provides for our daily bread — the earth can produce enough to feed everyone. Yet many still go hungry. As members of theEvangelical Lutheran Church in America and through our gifts to ELCA World Hunger, we commit to pursuing a world of justice where all are fed.There is much to be done, and new federal proposals about refundable tax credits may be a sweeping policy change that could do more to lowerchildhood poverty than any other policy measure available.
