Your 2017 In Review

Before we get into planning for 2018, it’s so valuable to look back on the year past. Reflecting on what’s happened, what went well and what didn’t, and what you’ve learned is grounding.

• You create a new baseline, a new foundation for the new year.

• You don’t spend energy holding on to what’s happened.

• You start with a clean slate.

• You’ll have more clarity.

• You’ll make better decisions about the coming year. So let’s step back and shine a light on your business. It’s important to leave judgment at the door when you do this. Be compassionate with yourself, and celebrate all the successes you had – no matter what happened, they were many! Here we go…

STEP #1: Where you were Start by reviewing where you were at the start of the year. It’ll give you perspective. Also go back and review your goals for the year. Once you have a clear sense of how you started, move into the next step.

STEP #2: Where you are Spend the most time on this step. Get really clear on where you are in the achievement of your goals. Collect numbers. Do research as needed. Use the checklist on page 5 and these questions to focus particularly on the following areas: Your finances: How close did you come to achieving your financial goals? Do the math – numbers will give you clarity! How far are you from that goal, or how much did you exceed your goals? This reality check, whatever the numbers, is ultimately liberating – you’ll know exactly where you stand. Your offerings: Were your offerings successful? Did you receive feedback from your prospects and clients that let you know they were valuable? If you introduced a new offering, or offered it again, were the launches successful?

Your sales: Was your sales process effective? Have you documented the changes you’ve already made, so that everyone involved in sales understands the updated process and can repeat what works with each new prospect? Your marketing: Did you reach your ideal client audience? Did you increase engagement with them? If you used ads, were your ads successful in either selling your products or services, or did they increase engagement? Were the ads cost-effective? Your email list: Email is the most powerful way to market online, and your list of email addresses is very valuable. Is your email list growing? Did it grow as much as you planned? Again, check the numbers. Your allies: Was your team effective? Were your team and suppliers helpful in creating a great customer experience? How many new partnerships did you enter into (include anyone who helped you promote to a new audience)? Your systems: Are your systems working? Did they make everyone’s job easier? Your mindset and energy: Did you manage your energy well? Did you take time away from your business to rejuvenate? Were you able to see things that didn’t work well as learning, and all part of your journey as an entrepreneur?

STEP 3: Learning What’s the biggest thing you learned about your business or yourself in 2017? What surprised you the most? What inspired you the most?

STEP 4: CELEBRATE! End this process with a celebration of all that happened in the past year. Toast yourself with a latte or a piece of chocolate. Celebrate your successes, and approach whatever you didn’t experience as a success with gratitude for what you learned in the process. Now that you have a solid foundation under you, your clarity can carry you into planning for a high impact 2018!

When you set goals based on that impact, IMPACTful goals grounded in your Impact Purpose and begin to take action reaching for those targets, your impact and your income will really start to take off. Here’s an overview of the process:

Step 1. The High Level Goals What are your goals in each of these 3 major realms for your business?

• Impact

• Income

• Reach

* Impact: How can your business touch people in ways that are constructive and

valuable? How can your business contribute and make a difference?

* Income: What income goal do you want to reach in your business in 2018?

* Reach: How many people do you want to reach with your offerings, your

message? What customer/client groups do you want to connect with and serve? What influencers/colleagues do you want to create and maintain relationships with?

Step 2. The Goal Supporters

What will you need to do in each of the following areas to achieve those goals, in each area of your business:

• Offerings: your products and/or services

• Sales: your process

• Marketing: community building, promotions

• Allies: 1) Team & Suppliers: highly effective people and organizations who help create a valued customer experience, and 2) Colleagues who work with you to invent new offerings and to promote your business

• Systems: repeatable, clear processes ensure your business operates fluidly.

Step 3. The Hub Who do you have to be/grow into to hold these goals? You as your business’ leader are at the hub. To grow your impact, you will have to grow too, in order to hold these goals steadfastly and guided by your Impact Purpose until they are achieved. That is how great impact is made, through people like you who are willing to grow into your vision of the impact you want to have. The good news? It’s already in you.

IMPACTful Goal Levels We’re not going to set goals for the next five years. Or even the next year. Surprised? Here’s what works best. Instead of time frames, we’re going to look at your IMPACTful Goals achievement in terms of:

• what is readily accessible, with ease, from where you are now

• what will require some stretching outside of your comfort zone

• what serves your biggest vision for your business. Making progress in all 3 will expand your impact more quickly and effectively. For each type of goal, Accessible, Stretch, and Big Vision, you’ll set goals for Impact, Income, and Reach. ** Accessible goals that are worthy of your Impact Purpose are those that are pretty easy to achieve. You already have the resources, or can access them readily.

For example: You know the activities that need to be done, and perhaps just need to do more of them. You may just add to one of your existing offerings. You may already be the person you need to be in order to achieve them, or need to expand your abilities just a little.

** Stretch goals that are also worthy of your Impact Purpose are those that require you to get uncomfortable, to go outside of what you’ve already done into new territory. These goals require new resources and marketing activities.

For example: You may need new team members and suppliers. Learning will have to happen, for both you and your supporters. New systems will have to be put in place. You’ll create and offer new products/services to achieve this set of goals. You yourself will have to expand as a business owner, become the person who can effectively manage these Stretch Goals.

** Big Vision goals worthy of your Impact Purpose will require the most growth of all. Growth in offerings, marketing, team, suppliers, and the repeatable processes that make everything run smoothly. Your business will look very different from what it is today when your Big Vision goals are achieved. You are going to be very different. To achieve them, start looking at them right now, so you can begin immediately to make choices with those goals in mind.

BIG Achievement Time to celebrate! Celebrating is an important part of goal achievement: acknowledge what you’ve done and revel in it. Goal setting is a big task. You’ve completed your IMPACTful goal setting process, aligned with your Impact Purpose and high levels goals. Well done! Next is our last step in this workbook for 2018: translating IMPACTful goals into action.

Your IMPACT in Action Here we are at the end of the goal setting process. You have up to 9 big goals for impact, income, and reach that are Accessible, Stretch, and Big Vision. A great framework for this year. You also have goals within each of those realms, for all the areas of your business. A great selection to choose from each quarter of the year. That’s what we’re going to do as our last step. Set yourself up for action in the first quarter of 2018. Repeat this process before the start of each new quarter, to accelerate your action progress. Schedule time into your calendar now to do that.

ACTION STEP 1: Choose which IMPACTful goals you’ll work on in this quarter A. On your worksheets, select which of the 9 big IMPACTful goals in impact, income, and reach you’ll focus on this quarter and write, “Q1” next to the ones you’ve chosen, or mark it with a color that you’ve chose for this quarter. That will help you keep track. Keep it to a maximum of 3 Big IMPACTful goals. Focus is important. Trying to make progress in everything at once distracts and overwhelms you. Make the sometimes hard choice to focus. B. Next, within the 3 Big IMPACTful goals you just selected, choose your smaller goals in each realm (offerings, sales, marketing, allies, and systems). Choose a maximum of 1 smaller goal per realm. Write “Q1” next to the ones you’ve chosen. You should have no more than 15 smaller goals. ACTION STEP 2: Break your goal down into individual actionable steps Many goals involve multiple steps. Break it down into smaller actionable steps. Use the worksheet on the next page to write them down. You can have some fun with this! For your most important goals, create a visual. Example: a wall ‘thermometer’, where you list each step from the bottom up. Then mark off on the thermometer how close you are to your goal by adding in another ‘degree’ on the thermometer as you complete each step. ACTION STEP 3: Give yourself a target date for each step Attach a date to each step - it makes them more likely to be completed. You’ve just created a schedule for completion that you can follow. Go ahead and use the worksheet on the next page to complete this stage of your 2018 High Impact Workbook for the first quarter of 2018. Schedule in a time in your calendar to repeat this step for each of the remaining three quarters. Use the Work Alchemy Weekly Planner as a companion to set yourself up for success each week in 2018.

BONUS: Goal Achievement Support Once you start taking action and you see progress, your motivation and enthusiasm will dramatically improve. You’ll find it much easier to keep going. Consistent daily rituals are one of the practices of extraordinarily successful people. They help you take consistent action. You can adopt this practice as your own. Here are suggestions, so you can create your own daily ritual:

1. Mindfulness practice Being conscious of what you are doing does great service for your goal achievement. You become self-empowered to have agency over your experiences. To develop this muscle of mindfulness, incorporate a daily practice of some form of mindfulness. Examples: meditation on the breath, or movement that is deliberate: tai chi, mindful walking, or freeform movement, connecting with how your body wants to move in this moment.

2. Visualize your goal achieved

Your imagination is your preview of life’s coming attractions. ~Albert Einstein Picture in your mind that your goal has been achieved in all its fullness. How does it look, feel, and sound? Who is there? How do you feel now that it’s completed? Do this regularly, so it becomes a habit. I do this as I first sit down to work each day.

3. Put up reminder pictures or notes reminding you of your goal Write yourself notes or post a picture on your computer home screen or on the wall to remind yourself of your goal. I use dry erase marker on my bathroom mirror for these reminders. You may want to post them in more than one place. Move them around, so you notice them more easily.

4. Schedule in time each day to work on the goal

Small actions consistently completed add up to big results. Use your day planner to map out the time each day you will spend on the goal. Make this an unbreakable appointment with yourself and your goal.

5. Celebrate when each step is completed Acknowledging you’ve completed something creates a positive feeling around your goal. Celebrating motivates, energizes, and inspires you. Examples: Share it with a colleague or friend. Ring a bell, or blow a horn. Whatever you choose, pause and recognize that you did what you said you would do. Your self-esteem will get a boost and empower you for your next step. Write down your own daily ritual for goal achievement. Writing it down solidifies your commitment, and it also gives you a quick reference early in the process when you want to remember the steps. You’re ready!
