A highlight of the ceremony was getting to observe two of our Agricultural Economics graduates as speakers during the graduation ceremony. Tennyson Hull ’19 presented the Invocation, and Jason Edmondson ’19 presented the Student Expression of Appreciation speech. Both of these graduates did an excellent job, and represented the Department well. Faculty Senate Representation We were recently informed that Dr. Senarath Dharmasena ’10 was elected to serve on the Honors and Undergraduate Research Advisory Council in the Faculty Senate. In this position he will represent Department's and Colleges research activities at the University level emphasizing Undergraduate Research. Congratulations to Dr. Dharmasena, we know that you will represent the Department and the College well. Ty Timm Honor Registry Induction Earlier this week, Dr. Chi Chung Chen ’99 was inducted into the Tyrus R Timm Honor Registry in a ceremony in Taiwan. Dr. Bruce Carl was there in person, and took recorded congratulations statements from myself and Dr. Ed Rister. Dr. Chen grew up on a family farm in Wandan, Pingtung County, the southernmost county in Taiwan, where this family raised a diverse mix of vegetables, rice, other crops and hogs. Dr. Chen earned his Bachelors degree in 1989, and a Masters degree in 1994 in Agricultural Economics at the National Taiwan University in Taipei. Dr. Chi Chung Chen received his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University in 1999. During his professional career, Dr. Chen has established himself as one of the most prolific researchers on the effects of climate change and El Niño Southern Oscillation events on agriculture, with more than 50 articles attributed to him since 2000. Dr. Chens body of work has significantly bolstered the reputation of Texas A&M and the Department of Agricultural Economics, and he continues to collaborate with faculty in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences on projects and publications. He has visited Texas A&M on study leave twice, in 2005 and 2009, once as a Fulbright scholar. His professional accomplishments have allowed him to attain the title of Distinguished Professor, and to serve in a position equivalent to the Provost of a major Taiwanese University. In addition, Dr. Chen has been named the Minister of Agriculture in Taiwan, and is the chief agricultural policy advisor to the Taiwanese president. We will have periodic Ag Eco Fridays during the summer and will return to our weekly publications when the fall semester starts. I hope you all have a great weekend.

From Vine to Wine Texas may lack the castles, cottages and architecture of southern France, but winemakers in the state are crafting reds, whites and rosés with a uniquely Texan flair. In fact, the Lone Star State is the country’s fifth largest producer of wine! As demand for wine and grape production grows, Texas A&M is preparing graduates to enter the $13.1 billion wine industry.
