As we wrap up what has been one of the most successful years in IIDA Indiana history, we are so excited about the direction of this Chapter! Your 2014-2015 IIDA Indiana Chapter Board of Directors have been working tirelessly and diligently to continue to promote, advocate, and support the profession of Interior Design in the State of Indiana. We hope that you continue to take advantage of the offerings that IIDA Indiana provides monthly. The IIDA Indiana Chapter Board of Directors returned from a very information-packed 48 hours, just last month. The Annual Summer Board Retreat was a huge success this year, with the common goal being the future vision of this Chapter. A HUGE thank-you goes out to Tracey Kessens with Louisville Tile, in partnership with Crossville Tile, for a wonderful experience in Nashville, TN! We managed to conduct a comprehensive Board Meeting, visit the Crossville Manufacturing Plant, engage in CEUs, and have a little fun, as well! You have noticed several enhancements to the Chapter over the last couple of years. The development of the Chapter Brand continues to move forward. The IIDA Indiana Chapter Website is a great resource and tool for you to use, just within the click of your fingertips. The Brand of the IIDA Indiana Chapter has been developed more thoroughly and will continue to be the "look" for our great Chapter. You will definitely start to notice the consistency in communications, if you haven't already. Our programs continue to flourish, as well, with the help of our generous Chapter Partners - thank you! We have developed a more streamlined planning process for programs, giving you the notice you need to plan accordingly, and allow the Chapter to provide content-enriched programs, worthwhile networking opportunities, and hugely successful large fundraiser events for our Chapter. Speaking of hugely large events, did you make it to Cirque de Paris?! Check out the blurb in the newsletter. What an event that was! We thank all of our event committee members and event sponsors for contributing to make this event so incredible! Stay tuned, but I've heard the Golf Outing is coming back in 2015? Exciting times! As the IIDA Indiana Chapter continues to look forward, the Board of Directors continually challenges one another to provide you with the best resources possible. As a result of the successes of the Chapter, we have amended the Partnership Campaign, again for 2015, to include a comprehensive package offering. This "one-time" ask will allow the Chapter to strategically budget annually, and still continue to provide our Membership with the most value, as well as, providing our Partners with more value in their contributions. You have shared, we have listened! This Chapter isn't successful with each and every one of you, and for that, we thank you!

Updates to LegislationMelissa Laviolette

The state of Indiana does notcurrently have any active legislationpertaining to interior design as SenateBill 0250, otherwise known as theERASER Bill, was tabled. Ourefforts have been focused onadvocacy education and raisingawareness for the interior designprofession. A 6-part CEU seriestitled `Use Your Voice' wrapped up inSeptember and provided education ona wide range of topics from building agrass roots effort to state lobbyingbasics. We are working closely withthe Interior Design Coalition ofIndiana (IDCI) to stay on top of anynew legislative efforts as well as toprovide some fun events in theupcoming year. We are currently inthe process of applying for the IIDALegislative Grant, which wouldprovide us with the means to put onprograms, continuing education, andsupport other legislative efforts. Ft. Wayne City Center Wine Tasting atHeritage WineryLindsay Shutt, Assoc. IIDA The Fort Wayne City Center took a short drive north of the city onSeptember 22 for an educational evening, only this time it was aneducation in wine. The networking event took place at Country HeritageWinery and Vineyard. The winery is relatively new to the area, only havingopened in 2011, so this was an opportunity for many to visit for the firsttime. Designers and product representatives gathered in the Black BearEvent Center and quickly learned how the event space earned its nameonce they saw the two bears guarding the door.

After checking in and taking advantage of photo ops with the animals, everyone found their way to the bar to see what Country Heritage had tooffer. And they were not disappointed. With 30 wines on the tasting menuand two knowledgeable bartenders, there was something for all.Attendees learned that Country Heritage specializes in fruit wines andeven got to sample the wine of the month. A delicious and well-presentedspread from Earth Fare gave everyone something to munch on whilecatching up with friends and colleagues. One lucky designer even won abottle of wine for her early registration! With a few other wineries in theFort Wayne area and the positive feedback from this event, IIDA membersand guests might just find themselves trying out another local winery.

Preparing for any test can be anxiety-inducing and challenging. However, preparing to sit for the NCIDQ is anotherlevel of stress. As the Associate MemberDirector, my main job is to help alleviateany stress related to taking the NCIDQ. In September, I hosted a panel sessionthat consisted of people who hadpreviously taken all or parts of the exam.Anyone who was interested in or hadquestions about the test were welcomethere. We went over all of the parts of theexam, the costs, the time frames, and therequirements to sit for the NCIDQ. Thepanel members were more than helpfulin sharing their experience andanswering any questions that theparticipants had. After speaking with theattendees, I learned that the panel reallyhelped reduce anxiety and also, peopletaking the exam this year and next wereable to find study-buddies. Ft. Wayne & Indianapolis City CentersHosts, "Designers Give Back Night" at theBallparkLindsay Shutt, Assoc. IIDA The IIDA Indiana Chapter Fort Wayne City Center spent a night at theballpark on July 23 for the Designer's Give Back Night. This socialevening was dedicated to the Villages, which is Indiana's largest not-for-profit child and family services agency. The volunteers at the Villageswere in need of school supplies for the children they assist and designersof IIDA were happy to help! With a beautiful summer day and ParkviewField, home of the TinCaps, as the setting, Fort Wayne's designersheaded downtown with school necessities in tow. Kim Andrew, arepresentative of the Villages, greeted everyone as they checked in andone could see the joy on her face as the contributions piled up. Supporting the Villages was only the beginning of the night. The 27designers, family members and product representatives enjoyed dinner inthe Home Run Porch by third base as the game got under way. Theweather could not have been better and all in attendance cheered on theTinCaps, some even spotted Johnny, the mascot. When it was time to go,despite an eventual TinCaps loss of 6-1 against the Beloit Snappers, everyone left happy knowing Kim was leaving with a heaping bin of backpacks and school supplies to take back to children in need. Hopefully nextyear the TinCaps win...but with great food, friends and a much deservingorganization benefitting from the night out, the score was the last thing oneveryone's mind!

Editor CommentsAndrea Cole "Constantly improve your craft. Make thingswith your hands. Innovation in thinking is notenough." John C. Jay of Wieden-Kennedycreated a list of 10 Lessons for YoungDesigners, among this list is the quote above. This simple statement hit me with a punchwhen I read it. As our busy lifestyles surroundus and eventually consume every ounce of ourday, week, and year we tend to forget about the activities that makeus the designers we have potential to be. Take a step back from theTo-Do list, get off of your computer and away from your e-mails andtake a minute to improve your craft. Create something with yourhands and your mind, rejuvenate and keep improving your work!
