Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We have officially begun fall even though it is still on the warm

side. Fall is probably my favorite season of the year. I enjoy

getting out in the great outdoors which often leads me to reflect

on the beauty of God’s creation.

We have a duty to preserve what God has given to us. We are to

be stewards of creation instead of masters, but what does that

really mean? What does it mean to be a “steward?” The typical

definition of steward is, “a person who manages another's

property or financial affairs; one who administers anything as

the agent of another or others.” The key distinction here is that

it denotes a person who is put in charge of “another’s property.”

Being a steward means that we have been given the duty to

manage something that is not ours.

This means that the earth is not somehow ours for the taking.

We do not have ownership over it. Instead, we are “stewards”

of God’s creation and must rightly “manage” what He has

given us. This also means that there are right and wrong ways to

“manage” it, as we are not the ones who make the rules. We

must abide by the rules of the true Master of Creation, God

Himself.

Another helpful term that describes our role in the world (and

our care of creation) is “pilgrim.” Often we forget that the earth

is not to be our “kingdom” that will last forever. Our kingdom

will be in Heaven, where we will inherit what God desires to

give to us. We are simply pilgrims on this earth, always

striving to draw closer to our ultimate destination.

Put in this context, a pilgrim realizes that everything is a gift.

Creation is a gift from God and we have been put in charge over

it for the time being. However, it is only temporary. The final

destination is Heaven and so the created world around us is only

to be used in accord with that end. We are not meant to

“master” or “subdue” creation for our own selfish purposes.

Instead, we must realize how our care of creation is meant to

propel us further along the path to the Eternal Kingdom.

In Christ,

Fr. Dan

Stewardship Note

The phrase in today’s Psalm, “May

you see your children’s children,” is

really a prayer for a long life. The

good steward knows that every day is

a gift from God, to be lived with joy

and thanksgiving. “May the Lord

bless us all the days of our lives!”

ROSARY PRAYER SERVICE Please join us every second Sunday of the month (October 14th) for a Rosary Prayer Service at 2:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's. For more information, contact Fred Hibst at 552-5381.

Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

ROSARY AT THE GROTTO Join the Daughters of Isabella to recite the rosary as Our Holy Mother requested. When she appeared to the three children of Fatima, she made this request: “I want you to return here on the thirteenth of each month for the next six months, and at the very same hour…” Bring your rosaries, lawn chairs, family and friends on October 13 at 7:00 p.m. If raining, bring your umbrellas, but in case of stormy weather, the rosary will be recited in the church. “Say the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world…” Our Lady of Fatima Visit www.ewtn.com/fatima for more info.

CURIOUS ABOUT BECOMING CATHOLIC?

Inquiry sessions are being held after each Sunday Mass

to offer insight and answers to your questions. Please

contact Scott Woodruff from St. Mary at 278-7134 or

Rhonda & Jeff Goforth from St. Joseph at 675-9373. This

is a great opportunity to learn about the Catholic faith.

LIFE CHAIN

Life Chain is a prayerful witness for life. Participants

stand (sit, if necessary) for one hour and quietly pray for an end to abortion, for those in crisis situa-

tions, and for our nation. It is a "visual statement of

solidarity by the Christian community that abortion

kills children and that the Church supports the

sanctity of human life..." You may join with pro-life

individuals throughout the USA on Oct. 7. Bring

lawn chairs, water, strollers as needed. The closest

Life Chain is in Muncie on McGalliard Rd. (811

Plaza) from Granville to Oakwood from 2:00-3:00

p.m. Check out http://www.lifechain.net for more

information or for other locations and times. Or you

may contact Regina Culbertson at 765-639-9909.

THAT MAN IS YOU! A Catholic Men’s Laity Ministry is meeting at St. Mary in Zimmer Hall every Saturday morning. Breakfast is served at 7:00 and a 30 minute video starts at 7:15 with 30 minutes of discussion to follow. The session is over at 8:15. All men from both parishes are wel-come. That Man is You! honestly addresses the pressures and temptations that men face in our modern culture, especially those relating to their roles as husbands and fathers. The program harmonizes current so-cial and medical science with the teachings of the Church and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision of man fully alive!
