Dennis S. Odiver Can you imagine celebrating life without God? Can you imagine celebrating faith without the Church? We think of celebration, oftentimes, as merriment. There is more to it, however, than we perceive it to be. Celebrating is not simply immersing oneself in joyous festivities or pompous activities. It is in the Christian sense knowing God and experiencing His presence in the various spheres of one’s being. Celebrating involves interrelatedness - our communion with God and with one another. “Who do people say the Son of Man is? .... Can you imagine celebrating life without God? Can you imagine celebrating faith without the Church?

We think of celebration, oftentimes, as merriment. There is more to it, however, than we perceive it to be. Celebrating is not simply immersing oneself in joyous festivities or pompous activities. It is in the Christian sense knowing God and experiencing His presence in the various spheres of one’s being. Celebrating involves interrelatedness - our communion with God and with one another.

In the gospel of St. Luke chapter 4, verses 20-22, it says “… All the people in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him as he said to them, “This passage of Scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read. They were all well impressed with him and marveled at the eloquent words that he spoke. They said, “Isn’t he the son of Joseph?”

prayer such as the Oratio Imperata. They are also the ones tasked to make the church announcements before and after the mass proper.

Early this August, the LC Ministry composed of 44 men and women attended the formation seminar at the Lay Force Chapel of the San Carlos Seminary as a preparation for their commissioning held on August 13, 2011. On that day, the 44 members of the LC Ministry renewed their vow of commitment to undertake this special role and responsibility with renewed strength and spirituality. Headed by Ms. Christie Vazquez, they have committed to serve as lectors and commentators until 2012. They will serve in at least two to three masses in a week, attend the regular Saturday morning and Wednesday evening meetings as well as undertake special tasks of the Ministry if necessary. As head coordinator of the LC Ministry, Ms. Christie is in charge of scheduling and rotation of assignments of the members.

Most importantly, according to Ms. Christie, they have to live the word, meaning the members are encouraged to feel, to live, and to learn from the word of God. According to her, the members are enjoined to

prepare spiritually not only physically. She said that in her five years in the Ministry, not once has she felt reluctant or lazy to fulfill her duty as lector or commentator.

“To be an effective lector and commentator, in my experience, we have to make the liturgy alive in our hearts and minds as we conduct our daily lives. The Holy Spirit is really working on me as I ponder on the word of God, sometimes I get to the point of tears,” she said.

Pastor’s Message ... from page 1

How do we celebrate life? Admittedly, we devote much of our time and effort working, worrying, and wrangling our way to a routine of doing something, getting something and conforming something to our set of likes and wants. It is a life that cannot be celebrated.

Jesus challenges us to rediscover celebrating life by pointing to us the Church. “So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. (Mt. 16:18)

It is through this Church that Jesus continues to reveal Himself and make known His will for us. He bestowed this Church authority and power. An authority that is not arbitrary. A power that is not coercive. A Church imbued with both to lead us in obedience to God’s will.

How are we as Church? The Church we belong to is the Church that has scandalized us, hurt us and disheartened us. Our Church has obviously not used the keys of the kingdom properly. Our Church has been directed on countless times as a human and worldly institution. But this same Church, God sustains, renews

and recreates. Hence, there are those who continue to listen to God and take the Church back in its right course. They are the ones who seek the true Christ and work faithfully proclaiming His Word.

Jesus tells us: “And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.” (Mt. 16:18-20)

Jesus is the celebrant of life. He wants us to celebrate life with Him. He wants us to celebrate faith in the Church, with the Church and through the Church. It is He who suffered and died for us, that we may have life. It is He who built this Church by calling us to Himself in faith that we may love and serve one another fully and completely.

Let us not dare imagine celebrating life without God. Let us not dare imagine celebrating faith without the Church.
