1. Plugin- Whats that?

Wordpress is written in a coding language called PHP

Don’t worry it just is!

It works great out of the box – installs fine

However the Wordpress community have written lots of additional features that add tons of great features to Wordpress.

These features/snippets of code are called PLUGINS – plug them in!!

You can search for all of these on Wordpress.org or even from your dashboard

Warning: Just because they exist does not mean they are great. Some are amazing – some are only OK and some just don’t work anymore.

Choose carefully!

BEFORE: What the hell is a plugin?

AFTER: Aren’t plugins really useful. I would be lost without them

2. RSS2. RSS You probably saw or heard about RSS several times duing your days at the WordCamp event.

RSS is simply a method of allowing you to read blog content without actually going to the blog itself

RSS stands for (one def anyway) Real Simple Syndication.

There are a lot of readers out there (Google Reader is one www.google.com/reader) that take the heading from a blog post and the main content and allow you to read multiple blogs at once.

Many people never actually to go to a blog and just read the RSS feed

BEFORE: What does that funny icon do

AFTER: I’d be lost without my RSS feed reader. I’d never get to readall my blogs

3. Wordpress.com v. Wordpress.org

Yup – two sites!

The difference.

Simply put.

Wordpress.com allows you to create a blog on their platform (no plugins though!)

Wordpress.org is where you can download the latest version of Wordpress, read about features, read the forums and so on.

BEFORE: Two sites I’m confused!

AFTER: I love Wordpress.org there is so much helpful info there

4. SEO – I am now more confused than ever

If you never hear about SEO before this weekend then shame on you!! Go home now

Only joking – don’t worry.

SEO is search engine optimisation its making your Google want t ocrawl your site and push your site up the search rankings (short def sorry)

The most important thing for you at the moment as a new blogger is to write regularly about your topic and have good –> great –> superb posts that people will enjoy reading.

Start using the SEO plugins that come with Wordpress to improve your searchability

Don’t get hung up on it now. Its easy to rank for easy topics (Google Banana Picking in Ireland I am #1!!)

Its harder for more competitive topics.

BEFORE: SEO is that a police officer?

AFTER: I know SEO is important butI am not going to get hung up on itTill I get some good content on my blog!
