Lesson• Creating a newspaper based
on a novel and its time period.
ObjectivesBy the end of this lesson students will be
expected to:Properly use the conventions of writingUse clear topic sentences to introduce
ideas in a paragraphShow commitment to a chosen topic while
keeping appropriate purpose and audience in mind
To demonstrate the following word processing skills: Bold, italics, underline, add clip art, columns, font and font size, align right, left and center, add a table
Grade Level: – Grade 9
Length of Lesson: – Student will have three - one hour periods
to work on this lesson in class.
Groups: – Students will work in small groups, no
larger than four to a group.
Materials and Equipment
Microsoft Office
Internet
The Outsiders
Activity• Collaborative newspaper after
completing The Outsiders. • Each group will be given a topic from the
book as well as a topic that they will have to research.
• The groups will than have to create a story and/or advertisement based on
the content and their understanding of the novel and its time period.
Activity• Each group will be expected to hand in
one page for the newspaper. The end project will be completed in a word-processor (Microsoft Word or Publisher) and will include the following:
A title of the newspaper, date, location, cost to purchase
Two photos and/or graphics per pagePage numbers (bottom middle of page)
Book Topics • Major event in the novel• Character highlights/spotlights• History of Tulsa, Oklahoma• Community events• Weather• Sports• Current events, etc.
Research Topics
• Homelessness• Death, grief, and loss• Child abuse• Prejudice• Smoking and drinking.
