heres an excitement in the air that no other timeof year comes close to and thanks to Christmasand the fast approaching New Year, we can all lookforward to even more glitzy and glamorous festiveparties! Whether theyre for work, an outing withfriends or even a family gathering, theres a staple

yet versatile look you can re-invent and accessoriseto suit almost any party occasion this winter.

FIRST STEP:invest in a simple black jumpsuit.Whether it has lace detailing, a plunge neck, long sleeves or evenscuba panels, step away from the LBD youve had in your wardrobefor years on end and opt for a comfortable yet distinctive look thatwill turn heads in and out of the party. For those who arent greatin towering stiletto heels, luckily this Autumn/Winter 14 is a timefor ankle boots, mid heels and block heeled footwear. Pair thesewith your jumpsuit for a classic look suitable for events that runwell into the New Year; dinner date or gallery opening perhaps?

As for makeup, this season favours two opposing looks beyond allothers. Either choose a wine red or burgundy lip colour or go for

a blunt nude or faint pale pink shimmer. Strong brows are a mustbut go easy on the eyeliner; focus instead on the lashes with a slickof volume boosting mascara. For eyeshadow, find a dependablemineral base in taupe, mauve or nude. Less about crazy colourpops and more about contouring and high feline cheekbones, wieldthe power of blusher and practice techniques for creating a sharplook. Moisturising is key however (especially in winter), so choose afull-coverage moisturiser for your skin before picking even pickingup your foundation brush. For an optimum dewy and fresh facedlook, get a long-lasting illuminator for under the eyes. Last but notleast, indulge in this seasons nail trends by alternating from reverseFrench manicures to azure blue geometric shaped nail designs in

a glossy texture.Wear your hair up or down but when it comes to accessorising, the beauty of a black jumpsuit is that youll look fantastic both on itsown and with an abundance of jewellery. Chunky and fine jewelleryshould never be mixed but an envelope clutch works well at dayor night. Whether youre a cardigan, satin blazer or embellishedjacket fan, you can always keep warm while out and about with awoollen maxi coat or blanket cape.

Overdoing it in the sugar department increasesinflammation within the body. Especially inWestern diets in which sugar is rife, our digestivesystems simply arent designed to cope with highlevels of sugar consumption and inflammationis our bodys reaction to this. The dangers ofinflammation within the body can lead to long-term consequences challenging to our qualityof life; diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis, certain cancers and even degenerativedisorders. From table sugar, brown sugar, rawsugar and honey (even raw) to corn sweetener, glucose, fructose and rice syrup, our bodiessimply cannot withstand thesurprising levels of these weunknowingly consume every day.

Each time we put as little as twosugars in a cup of tea we changeour bodys chemistry and disruptthe natural balance within thebody needed for maintenanceand repair.

Sugar also plays a huge factor in depletingthe essential vitamins and minerals we need tofunction at peak performance. The minerals weneed in our diets work in harmony with oneanother and when sugar interferes and depletesone, the others either become toxic or deficient.

Ever suffered from anxiety, depression irregularperiods, lower immunity or even a gut healthissue such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Tryeating less sugar and it may help lessen thesymptoms.

Women who consume a lot of sugar are likelyto experience reduced fertility. If trying to

ith the festive season well and truly upon us, food and drink areaplenty at this exciting time of year. Regardless of the cold andlong dark days, families and friends gather amidst a generalsense of merriment for booze and comfort food. Whilst time

spent on and off the treadmill is the last thing on many womensminds, so is their diet until a barrage of New Years resolutionsoverwhelms all. Though mince pies, Christmas pudding andmulled wine and cider are a delicious treat, its probably for thebest they only make a full-on appearance but once a year. Takea look at five ways in which too much sugar affects womensbodies

conceive is on your mind, it may help to look intoalternatives to sugary foods, especially refinedwhite sugars. Too much sugar in the body canaffect hormone levels through a sugar crash caused by an increase in insulin which in turnleaves you drained and exhausted thanks to fightor flight reaction by the body.

The hormones cortisol and adrenaline arereleased by the adrenal glands to replenishsugar levels but when this happens too often, our adrenal glands can become weakened andsluggish, causing a hormonal imbalance.

This also affects the levels of oestrogen, progesterone, the androgens DHEAand testosterone in your body.

    Insulin resistance is another

serious health issue caused by toomuch sugar consumption. The moresugar we eat, the more insulin werelease which eventually leads toinsulin resistance. Since we rely onthe pancreas to secrete insulin to

turn the sugar in our blood into energy for ourcells, too much sugary foods makes the pancreaswork overtime. Insulin resistance is linked toissues with ovulation and can put women atmuch higher risk of miscarriage.

Finally, perhaps something most women can

relate to: PMS. A time when its most importantfor hormones to work in harmony with oneanother and keep the body running smoothly, too much sugar actually creates unhappyhormones and causes cramps and uncontrollablecravings.

    Women who

consumea lot ofsugar are likelyto experiencereduced fertility

n winter, even the most disciplined arecompelled to turn to a big fat dollop of heartycomfort food. Just the though of sticky toffeepudding, duck fat roast potatoes and a greasytake away light up our senses as we prepareto indulge as much as we can in one sittingto refuel our bodies with desperately desiredcarbohydrates. Whilst New Years resolutionsmay help us hold back, its only a matter oftime before we crack and let loose for a boutof gluttony. Never fear however, for there

are plenty of delicious warming treats thatllactually nourish our bodies as well as our souls all guilt free and easy to make! Weve got a few ideas to get the ballrolling so tuck that take away menu back in the drawer and get readyto cook up a storm.

A serving of spaghetti bolognese might be quick and easy to turnup but why not enjoy a tried and tested gluten free gem? For a lightand fresh yet comforting dinner, pick up some rice vermicelli noodles, thinly sliced flank steak and fresh chilli, bean sprouts, coriander andspring onions to whip up into a tasty beef Pho noodle dish. The secretto a beautiful pho lies in its stock, so for a traditional and popular beefversion, you can either use a beef stock cube or take the time to simmer

a shank bone or oxtail prior to adding the noodles.Step away from the double cream in soup making and opt for

raw vegan miso soup to warm you from head to toe. With a totalpreparation and cooking time of less than 20 minutes, youd be sillyto not at least give it a try; particularly after slogging away at thegym just to keep to your fitness resolutions in the New Year. For oneserving youll need two tablespoon of raw miso, 3 cups of warm filtered

water (less if you prefer a more concentrated flavour), tofu and springonions, thinly chopped marinated mushrooms and and seaweed togarnish. Once youve blended the miso and water, you can add thetofu and garnishing.

Got a sweet tooth? Grab some under ripe pears and poach them inspiced red wine for a fat free pudding your friends will be envious of.For this youll need a vanilla pod, however much red you need to getsome healthy circulation going, 1 halved cinnamon stick, a fresh sprigof thyme and another to seve and 6 whole peeled pears with the stalksintact. Once youve added the vanilla pods, thyme and cinnamon tothe wine as it heats in a saucepan, gently lower in the pears. Make surethe pears are completely covered in wine (lie them down in a widersaucepan if youd prefer to have less wine) as they poach once theyretender all the way through youll know theyre ready to be served! Thegreat thing about poached pears is that they can keep for up to twodays in the fridge if youd rather save them for later.

lready the venuefor one of Londonsbest 50m pools, gym, volleyball andfootball court as wellas athletics track,

the internationaland communitysports facilitiesare to undergo

a redevelopment that will transformhe centre into a modern sporting andecreational site. In order to secure aong-term future for this listed venue, The

Mayor of London has laid out fresh plansor the Crystal Palace National Sports

Centre in working with CSM Strategic,FMG Consulting and GT architects. Planswere consulted on from 6th October to6th November and will now have beenurthered upon for the upcoming year in

which they will be finalised. In addition to improving the public

access areas around the sports centre (thisncludes restoring the original Paxton axiso the front of the building which makest easier to get to through the park), the

Olympic sized swimming pool will bereated to a brand new interior. A modern

health and fitness suite will be designedand built to overlook the park along with a

caf, ground floor reception area, climbingwall, terracing, playground and soft playarea. To cater to Londons need for sites fornew schools, a new Capel Manor Collegebuilding and a two-form entry primarychool were also under consideration forhe site, making the area a hub for sports, ecreation and education. However, The Mayors plans to create

chools on the site is under scrutiny;he cause of controversy lies with the

possibility that the athletics track is to

be demolished altogether simply to makeway. With The Mayors office consideringour different options in which the sports

centre can be changed, it appears theres a50/50 chance of the track staying or going.t seems the schools will be built whateverhe case, with either the athletics track or

only its stands being removed. The Commonwealth Games 400-metre

elay team member Conrad Williamshas stated; Its a shame that a pivotal, memorable and hugely historical icon of

British athletics is on the brink of beingtaken away.

Whilst the swimming pool is to bemodernised, experts say an intendedmodification would eliminate divingaltogether, given the pool would be much

too shallow. With the mayor havinginvested over 20 million in the site,a spokesperson has commented; Theproposals have been formulated followingdiscussions with a wide range of groupsand sporting organisations and the currentconsultation is an opportunity for localpeople and interested parties to voicetheir opinions and understand more aboutthe challenges facing the site. No finaldecisions have been made at this stageand we want the consultation responses toshape the development of a more detailedfinal proposal.

Young future sporting stars have spokenout to try and save the athletics track andswimming pool from undergoing changes.13-year-old diver Annabel Triggs holds abronze medal the National Age Groupthree-metre springboard event and believesshe will have nowhere to train should thepool modifications be made; The 2012London Olympics were fantastic and didinspire me and many of my generation buttwo years later, this development threatens

to take away facilities young athleteshave available in south London and closesuccessful and long-standing sports clubs. Is that really the Olympic legacy for us?

Some of you may have read theconsultation paper and taken part in thesurvey regarding the Mayors plans forthe site. Others will have attended theplans public exhibitions at the sportscentre last year. Whatever the consensusmay be, it is safe to say that the CrystalPalace National Sports Centre is a venue

intended for everyone to enjoy. Overseenby Better, the lessons and courses offeredby the leisure centre include swimming, gymnastics, athletics, football, tennis andeven trampolining. ROCKSTART tastersessions for climbing, racquet sports, bootcamps and personal training sessions arealso offered. For those with small children, theres Toddlers World for stimulatingplay (adult supervision required) and thebooking essential Ofsted registered Crchefor parents taking part in activities.

    HistoryOF A MINCEPie

Virtually non-existent for 11 months outof the year and suddenly stacked high insupermarket aisles come December, mincepies are rarely thought of outside the festiveseason. Whilst not everyones a fan of thesedoughy dried fruit morsels, mince pies havea rich history as a status symbol since they

were first made.Originally made in an oval shape to symbolise the baby Jesus

birthplace a manger the top of the mince pie represented

the cloth his mother lovingly wrapped around him. In theUK, during Stuart and Georgian times, mince pies symbolised

wealth and status; well-to-do families loved showing off duringChristmas get-togethers by carting out trays of pies of varyingshapes. Stars, hearts, flowers, crescents and even tear shapedmince pies would delight guests at festive parties. The moreextravagant parties would boast dozens of mince pies in shapesthat would interlock with one another, creating an edible tablepiece for guests to sample as the booze poured and carol singingcommenced.

Nowadays, mince pies are traditionally available in a smallround shape and can be enjoyed hot or cold. Eaten by themselves

or as a pudding with ice-cream, these readily available treatswere not always packed with dried fruit however; meat suchas lamb would have been used in the past. Often on ChristmasEve and regardless of whether theyre on his Naughty or NiceList, children will leave out carrots for Santas reindeer andmince pies and brandy for the big man himself as a treat for allof his hard work!

    SADIS UPON US

heres something aboutthe New Year thatbrings out the sensible inall of us. Resolutions aremade and stubbornlystuck to for as long asour conscience orthe memory of that last

raging hangover tugs at our minds andthe hope of a successful year often drivesus to make big life-changing decisions.

We work harder, longer hours and aimto perhaps achieve what we didnt in theprevious year.

Whilst this is all well and good, theexpectations and pressure of what weshould be doing dont always go hand inhand with the plaguing thought of thelong, dark winter days ahead. From themoment we awaken to when we leave theoffice, were bombarded with a pitch black

welcoming only the blaring light of thehigh street or our regular tube stationsseem to overcome. People are grumpyand postpone social engagements to

avoid facing the freeze whilst others arejust downright low whatever they do.

Although many of us plough on andget through the worst of this franklyquite bland time of year, others seem tofeel the brunt a lot more and succumbto winters dark grasp in a downwardmental, physical and emotional spiral.SAD Seasonal A ffective Disorder is acommon yet underrated complex illnessthat can affect even the strongest mindedindividuals. 20% of us experience mild

symptoms of SAD which leave us downbut without serious con sequence known as Sub-syndromal SAD sufferers, this discomfort will pass in time. For 2%of the UK population, the Winter Bluesis but a comical name for something we

wish we had! SAD is in fact a disabling

illness that can prevent sufferers fromfunctioning as we normally would on aneveryday basis without the right help andtreatment.

Lethargy, eating and sleep problemsoccur for Winter Blues sufferers butanxiety and depression arent so muchan issue. SAD sufferers (mostly women)experience a wide range of symptomsincluding but not limited to increasedirritability, loss of libido, lowered immunesystem with a vulnerability to infections, poor cognitive function, fatigue and

weight gain in addition to anxiety anddepression. Come the first signs of springhowever, many SAD sufferers experiencea sudden lift in mood and begin to losetheir symptoms from the winter. WhilstDoctors have yet to pinpoint the exactcauses of SAD, some researchers believethat less sunlight during the autumn and

winter months is responsible for thebrain making less serotonin, a chemicallinked to neural pathways that helpbalance our moods.

Whilst varied treatments are available,GPs often recommend Winter Bluessufferers to spend some time outdoorsin the early daytime to get more naturallight. Supplementing the body with

vitam in D via exposu re to nat uralsunlight can ease symptoms and help toeradicate a general feeling of lowness. Itseems however cold or grey it may be,spending even a little time outdoors on

your lunch break or on a slow weekendstroll is ultimately beneficial to your

health in ways other than filling yourlungs with fresh air! Serious SADsufferers should not be afraid to sharethe severity of their experience withtheir GP as antidepressant medicationsand phototherapy (light therapy) may bemore suited to combat their symptoms.

    Top 5worstDESSERTS

Dont be misled by the title, Top5 Worst Desserts is probablya dramatic way of puttingit, especially seeing as thesewonderfully delicious treats

are by no means inedible.Dangerously artery cloggingif eaten too often however, these addictive sweet treatsare probably best left aloneand saved for only the mostdire of cases break ups, childrens birthdays (a joyousyet stressful occasion for all)and perhaps even a visit fromyour mother-in-law, whosestringent views against asimple fruit salad are enoughto bring anyone down.

1Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream: Its everywhere; atthe cinema, the Costcutter around the cornerand sometimes half price at the supermarket.Surprisingly low down on the Worst Desserts

scale, dont be deceived by its seemingly innocentranking, its altogether too easy to polish off anentire tub by yourself. Depending on the flavour,

the calorie and fat content varies but generally, dont be shocked that half a cup ice cream fromthat spanking new Ben & Jerrys caf youve beendying to try piles on 300 calories and approximately20g of fat to your daily intake.

2Cheesecake: What harm can a civilisedcheesecake do? Hardly as indulgent assome of the other offenders on our list, acheesecake certainly harbours potential

for more brutal hours spent at the gym. Do treatyourself to the low fat variety once in a while but

dont forget the figures: a single serving packs over350 calories and a whopping 21g of fat into a tinyslice. Disappointing as it is, we speak truth.

3A McFlurry: Ahh, McDonalds. The verythought of this gloriously successful fastfood chain stirs deep rooted feelings of loveand hate. Memories of childhood birthday

parties, tossing out pickles from a Happy Mealcheeseburger, sub par coffee when you cant finda Starbucks and last weeks drunken binge meal

resurface to haunt even the best of us. A McFlurrymay be an easily justified impulse dessert butunsurprisingly, this tiny tub of ice cream can mountup to over 500 calories with toppings. Filled withsugar, expect to consume roughly 100g of it as wellas 15g of fat. Are you still lovin it?

4Banana Split: Not as popular here as in theU.S, this scrumptious dessert is easily madeat home or ordered from an American stylediner post burger and French fries. Yes, the

banana may be good for you but what of the multiplescoops of ice cream, spurts of whipped cream, glac cherries, flavoured syrup and multicolouredsprinkles that go on top? Have fun inputting anadditional 700-100 calories and over 40g of fat toMy Fitness Pal

5Chocolate Cake: A beautiful chocolate cake

can go both ways; a light and fluffy darkchocolate mocha recipe can be just enoughto ease your cravings but what about the

biggest, best and full-on ones out there? The classicchocolate cake often has ice cream or fresh creamdrizzled over the top, melted chocolate oozing outof it and icing sugar sprinkled over it. If youre evertempted to pull a Bruce Bogtrotter next time yousee Matilda, fight the urge hell have consumedover 1000 calories, over 100g of sugar and almost50g of fat. Plus, he probably walked back home witha horrendous tummy ache.

exhilarating game takes hockey to the bot-tom o a swimming pool where the actionis incredibly ast and urious, combiningskill and teamwork to create an adrenalinfilled, competitive sport. Te Mechanics OTe Game

Underwater Hockey (UWH, also knownas Octopush in the UK) is a globally playedsport, requiring the use o snorkeling gear(mask, fins, and snorkel) and combining

swimming skills, good fitness, and breathholding as all the action is underwater. Teobject o the game is to push the puck (spe-cially designed and weighted) using a sma-ll short stick (pusher) into the opposingteams goal. Beore the start o play the puckis placed in the middle o the pool, and theplayers wait in the water whilst touchingthe wall above the goal they are deending.wo teams o up to ten players compete, with six players in each team in play at anyone time, which may be on deck or in the

water outside the playing area, dependingon tournament rules. A typical playingormation is 3-3 (three offensive playersor orwards, and three deensive players or

backs) o which 3-2-1 (three orwards, twomidfielders and a back) is a variation. Telimited contact nature makes it very sae, thereore giving it a broad appeal with pla-yers rom 8 years and above.

Tere is a regular World Championship(every 2 years); attracting over 1000 pla-yers, 70 teams representing 20+ countries.Although all the action will be on the bo-ttom o an Olympic sized pool, games willbe broadcast live on the Internet to keep thegrowing global audience up to date with theaction and news on their country/teams.West Wickham Underwater Hockey ClubWest Wickham UWHC is the largest clubin London and south east, having our ses-sions including a junior team and affiliated
