From the Pastor…
This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.—Psalm 118:24
Suppose a millionaire told you that on the stroke of midnight he was going to deposit in your
bank account a gift of eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars. What would you say?
You’d probably say, “What’s the catch?”
And he would say, “The catch is that in the following twenty-four hours, you will have to spend it
all. If you don’t, it will vanish.”
Eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars? It’s not very likely that someone will be making a
deposit into your account for that kind of money. But how about eighty-six thousand four
hundred seconds? That’s the number of extra time-units that this Leap Year Day brings to all of
us. And when the hands of the clock close on midnight, February 29th, all of them will be gone.
What should one do with these bonus minutes and hours? Not an easy question, is it? I recently
read an article where this very question was brought up, and this is what he said: “There’s a
little game I play with myself on Leap Year Day. I call it ‘Suppose.’ Suppose all the little
pleasures and satisfactions we take for granted happened to us only once in four years?
Little things like the smell of bacon frying, or the song of a bird, or the laughter of children
playing in the yard. If such things happened only on Leap Year Day, how precious and
marvelous they would seem. If you play this little game, even half seriously, it will intensify your
awareness and your appreciation for all the days that the Lord has given us. Use this extra day
to remind you how wonderful life really is on all the other days. It may sound a bit foolish, but it
works for me. Maybe it would work for you.”
I invite you to join me this year on Saturday February 29th, to play “Suppose”. I do believe that
taking the time to be aware of all the amazing gifts that God gives us DAILY will give us a whole
new appreciation for this amazing life we live as followers of Jesus Christ.
Can you imagine…only smelling bacon once every 4 years? NO!
For the magical gift of time, granted to each of us in exactly the same measure, we thank You, dear Lord.

Finance Committee Report
On 1/19, Cory, WUMC Treasurer, gave a presentation to the congregation on the responsibilities of the Finance
Committee and the 2019 results. A summary of that presentation is provided here.
Finance Committee Includes
Jan Buchanan, Chair and Bank Account Owner;
Cory Stark, Treasurer;
Bob McCaughey & Melanie Bennett, Bank Account Signers;
All the Sunday Counters;
Church Council can approve extraordinary expenses and financial movements.
Important Notes on Committee Responsibilities
WUMC, like all charities, uses Fund Accounting to manage the financial books;
WUMC has several special committees, each with it’s own fund;
WUMC uses the General Fund to manage all operating expenses;
All tithings fund the General Fund;
Some funds are self-funding, like the Resale Shop;
Not all funds are accepting donations; if a member wants to donate to a special fund, they should inquire
about the status first;
2019 Tithing was $76,319; that is roughly $10,000 less than 2018.
We send 10% of that figure to Conference and 1% to District to support the larger Methodist church organization.

Finance:
Important Notes on 2019 Results
There is an outstanding loan of approximately $30K for the work performed on the basement due to the water
damage;
There is a separate fund established for paying down that loan; no tithes have been applied to that fund to
date; it is funded by the Fish Frys and 50% of the Parsonage Rental Income.
The other 50% of the Parsonage Rent is applied to the Building Maintenance Fund.
We are not funding special projects out of the General Fund, as we’ve typically not had enough income. We
usually have to take up a special offering.
Planning for 2020
Recently held a pledge drive; commitments totaling $65,800 were received.
That value is not enough to cover our operating expenses;
Pledge cards are still available in the church office;
United Methodists Women after Christmas, Christmas party
Our mission was our care & share back pack program.
Our lunch was provided by Sweet Lou’s and sponsored by Thrivent for Christians give back program
We had so much fun telling about ourselves and our church
Modeling outfits and items from the resale shop
We donated snacks items for our Friday back program. Donna Bunch shared with us about the program from school and how excited the kids are to get their Friday snacks !!
And then the annual white elephant gift exchange. God is soooo good!

Give as the Lord calls you to give: be as generous to God as God has
been to you!
Sunday School Teachers are needed. Thank you to all those who have volun-
teered to teach and care for our children. We still need a few more people to fill in occa-
sionally as a substitute. Teaching children can be a blessing to the teacher as well as the
children. They are the future of our church.
