Nine years after it began circulating, the eurotouches the lives of more than 330 million peopledaily. It is the official currency in 17 nations, and circu-lates unoff icially in several others. When Estonia dropped the kroon and began usingthe euro at the first of this year, the nation becamethe newest participant in the shared currency intro-duced on Jan. 1, 2002.The euro, the world's largest attempt at a commoncurrency, suddenly became the common denomi-nation for 300 million people, replacing the Frenchfranc, German mark, Italian lira and other national or"legacy" currencies. When 2002 dawned over Europe, the unified cur-rency came into use from Brussels to Berlin, Hel-sinki to Hamburg and Madrid to Marseille, acrossthe continent and stretching into the Nordic region. In 2002, the nations prepared billions of dollars'worth of coins and paper money, an estimated 14.5billion bank notes representing 600 billion, andsome 58 billion coins worth an unspecified facevalue.Since the initial launch, the eurozone has expanded, adding an average of one new member every yearfrom 2007 to 2011 , adding some 30 million residents.Further expansion is certain, as at least seven

more European Union members must, as ation in their accession to the EU, eventuallthe euro.Though the currency is unified, designs pin abundance. While the paper money has been widelyfor its designs, which do not vary amongnations save for a few characters in inscriptiuse of nationally designated designs ongives the coins an identity (the coin denomshare common reverses, with national desimitted on the obverse).Commemorative coin issues have contiflourish post-adoption of the euro, despitecirculating designs. The coins and paper money may be spwhere in the participating EU nations, national borders, without the exchange raterienced with the former national currencies. The ease of transactions was touted as onmost compelling reasons for a unified curren

one of the goals of unifying Europe, a proctook more than 40 years.Implementation of the euro was one of themost daring monetary experiments, andthe largest logistical operation that conEurope has witnessed since World War II.

Only 12 of the original 15 member states of theEU adopted the euro, with Denmark and the UnitedKingdom winning exceptions allowing them to optout of the currency program (they can join later ifthey chose). Sweden has a de facto opt-out, andrefuses to meet the criteria required to adopt theeuro. The conversion rates between each of the 12national currencies and the euro was fixed in May1998.The euro actually launched as a currency on Jan.1, 1999, to assist the financial markets prior to it

replacing national currencies.During this two-year time, many stores in EUnations listed prices in both euros and national cur-rencies, although national currencies continued tobe used in transactions.Acceptance of the euro coins and notes in circula-tion did not begin until Jan. 1, 2002. (Some starterkits became available Dec. 15, 2001, so residentscould become familiar with the coins).Though the euro was introduced as a circulatingcurrency throughout Europe at the same time, the

eurozone nations did not set a universal date fortheir legacy currencies to become invalid. The Dutch guilder expired Jan. 28, 2002; the Irishpound was withdrawn after Feb. 9, 2002. The last

day the French franc could be used was Feb. 17,2002; circulation of the remaining currencies -Austria's schilling, the Belgian franc, the Finnishmark, the German mark, the Greek drachm, Italy'slira, Luxembourg's franc, the Portuguese escudoand the Spanish peseta - ended Feb. 28, 2002.The euro is also used in three tiny European nation-states - Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City -that had currency arrangements with euro-adoptingnations but that themselves are not EU members.Eu ro co insProduction of the coins began several yearsbefore their release, to give governments time to

build the inventories necessary for replacement ofthe old coinage. The governments held the coins invaults until releasing them in 2002.The various governments took different approach-es in dating the coins struck for release on Jan. 1,2002.French, Spanish, Belgian, Finnish and Dutch coinsbear dates of actual production, starting with 1999,when the currency was formally established. Thesefive countries traditionally register a coin the year ofits mintage instead of the year when the coin is to

be put into circulation.Other governments, while they struck the coinsin advance, placed the 2002 date on the coins nomatter when they were produced from 1999 to 2001.Euro circulation coinage is produced in eightdenominations - the 1-, 2-, 5-, 10-, 25- and

50-cent coins, and the 1 and 2 coins. The 1-, 2- and 5-cent coins are composed ofcopper-plated steel, and the 10-, 20- and 50-centcoins are made of Nordic gold, an alloy of copper, aluminum, zinc and tin.The 1 and 2 coins are ringed bimetallic coins. The 1 coin has a gray-colored center made of cop-per-nickel, and a yellow outer ring of a copper-zinc-nickel alloy. The alloys for the 2 coin are reversedas compared with the 1 coin; the center is yellowand the outer ring has the steel color.Common reverse designs bind the euro coinage

    www.coinworld.com

together. The eighteuro coinage denomi-nations have sharedthree common reversedesigns, created by Belgiandesigner Luc Luyckx. The 1-, 2- and 5-cent coins share a design depict-ing the face value paired with a globe tilted to allowEurope to be visible. The globe represents the roleEurope plays in the world as a whole. The 10-, 20- and 50-cent coins share a designdepicting a close-up map of Europe. The maprepresents European unity with the member statescoming together (it shows all of Europe, and there-fore includes nonmember states).A map of Europe standing out from the rest ofthe globe appears on the 1 and 2 coins. It rep- ,

resents boundless possibilities, a Europe withoutfrontiers. All coins feature 12 stars in their design, repre-senting the 12 original eurozone members. In 2007, a redesign began for the common revers-es to reflect growth in the European Union. The new

designs were optional on the 2007 coinage, exceptfor Slovenia's coins (the nation adopted the euroJan. 1, 2007), but were mandatory for all eurozonenations by 2008.The changes were made necessary by the 2004accession of 10 nations: Cyprus, Czech Republic,Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland,Slovak Republic and Slovenia.New designs were introduced for the 10-, 20- and50-cent coins, as well as on the 1 and 2 coins;the design on the three lowest denomination coinswas not changed. The new design for the 10- through 50-centcoins shows an expanded EU. The map is solidcompared to the original design that separates thenations, showing them in approximate relation toeach other. The changes to the 1 and 2 coins are moresubtle: both old and new maps depict a map ofEurope standing out from the rest of the globe, butthe new design shows a larger map.The fulfillment of another mandate began in 2007,when eurozone members were required to beginlisting their country name or abbreviation on thenational side so euro users could easily identify theissuing nation. As of 2011, a few nations have done so, beginningwith Finland in 2007, but the process is far fromover, with some eurozone members yet to add therequired identifying marks.Na t ional de s ignsWhile the pieces share common reverses, eachmember state maintains its identity through theobverse, or "national" side of its coins. Each indi-vidual country chooses its obverse design.

Those designs were tested forpublic reaction before two groups: the general pub-l ic and cash handlers. The European Monetary Institute unveiled theselected designs in December 1996 after weighingthe advice of the two panels.Robert Kal ina of Austria's Oesterreichische Nation-albank won for his designs inspired by the Ages andStyles of Europe theme.Early in 1997, however, critics claimed structuresdepicted in the designs too closely resembled iden-t if iable structures and were insuff iciently generic.New designs were provided and unveiled in thesummer of 2001 .For the notes as issued, Kalina chose to depict thearchitectural styles of seven periods in Europe's cul-tural history: classical, Romanesque, Gothic, renais-

sance, baroque and rococo, the age of iron andglass architecture, and 20th century architecture. The windows and gateways on the faces of thenotes are intended to symbolize the spirit of open-ness and cooperation in Europe.

the euro notes, including holograms, securitythreads, foil patches and ink that changes colorwhen held at an angle. Each note bears a copy-right symbol. The paper also contains fluorescent fibers anda watermark that cannot be easily reproducedwhether by copying or printing.Designers also had to create a new symbol torepresent the euro, to take its place alongside thedollar's $ sign and the British pound's sign. E x p a n s i o n o f E U , e u r o z o n eSeventeen nations currently use the euro, and thecurrent population of residents in the eurozone isabout 331 million people.Following the initial launch, Slovenia joined in

2007, and was followed by Malta and Cyprus in2008.Slovakia joined in 2009, and Estonia dropped thekroon on Jan. 1, 2011, to accept the euro. The eurozone will continue to grow as the restof the EU member nations that acceded in 2004or later make the transition (Romania and Bulgariajoined the EU on Jan. 1, 2007).Nations that have joined the EU but have not yetbegun using the euro are still working out economickinks that have delayed their adoption of the jointcurrency. The Goliath on that list is Poland, which has apopulation of some 38 million people. The eurozonewill eventually add Romania's 21.5 million peopleand more than 10 million in both Hungary and theCzech Republic.Rounding out the list are Bulgaria (7.5 mil-lion), Latvia (2.2. million) and Lithuania (3.2 mil-lion). When the currently nonqualifying membernations eventually qualify to adopt the jointcurrency, the eurozone population could easilytop 430 million people, without accounting forpopulation growth.Recent weakness in the world economy, the glob-

al financial crisis, has hit Europe hard, but austeritymeasures have been put in place to shore up thewobbly economies burdened by debt.So far, the euro has stabilized and survived itstoughest challenge, and is anticipated to continueas a dominant world currency .
